Thats exactly how they learn. Her pronunciation of the word isnt actually wrong, its just that groups of letters have sounds that contradict the sound those letters would make individually. I forget the term for it, but the English language is full of contradictions. We just internalise them and forget about them as we get older.

They've been given a bad rep by movies and such. Like German Sheperds, they were used as scary guard dogs by many people and the idea stuck with people that they are big and scary.

Some dogs have their ears cut for health reasons, it's not always aesthetic. Plus you have no idea what this woman and her dog's circumstances are - the dog could be a rescue from a previous owner who cut the ears, whether for aesthetic or health reasons.
