2 out of the 3 times Jane solved quickly people were shot. This is why Jane HAS to set things up and manipulate people for a whole episode. By the end he's gift wrapped evidence, proof, and the culprit.

plus it also makes the police look a bit better seeing they need the time to figure it out and process evidence.

@@Vitross Most of the episodes there's no evidence sure but they're caught in incriminating positions that Jane's set up. That alone makes a strong case.

Incidentally, this was the first snippet of The Mentalist I ever got to see, I remember like it was yesterday (because, well... it sort of was), I was feeling sick all night then relocated myself to the couch and turned on the tv just to have something in the background, which always helps me feel better and less alone, and on came the Mentalist and I saw... This funny exchange. Well, I have to say, I love the show. I've watched all the other Crime shows, of course, NCIS, CSI, Law & Order, Law & Order the cooler one, the closer, Criminal Minds, obviously... But this really sticks out. It's somewhat like Monk but from a different angle if that is at all understandable.

very understandable. the carefree nature of his behavior, yet his attention to detail. gives me a vibe of an intelligent child inside an adult male body. who's also very good at understanding people, he's like the person who actually makes a effort to understand you. the kind of person that is very hard to find these days.

this show was the best thing ever. it had a boring ending with Red John. and it should have ended there, but the fans wanted more, so we got another season wich gave the entire show a better ending. but i think this show would have maybe been alittle better if every season had a main villian. like Dexter. Patrick Jane could have people back from his history who turned out to be the main villian through out that season. i think this show would have been better that way.

I sure wouldn't convict someone on the basis of "a mothers intuition", or anyone else's mere intuition. Nor would I acquit anyone of murder because they felt like they knew who killed their child. I sure hope you wouldn't either.

Pandering to the silly notion that a woman can tell when her husband is lying. So many women jump to conclusions, thinking they're so "intuitive". Then their refusal to change their minds proves to them that they're right.

  • @scottclark3761

He was priming her. Wives do know their husband's habits, quirks, and personalities. Likely in ways they don't know themselves. And vice versa, of course, but that wasn't important to Jane here. He was using her as a human lie detector....not that she knew her husband was lying any more than the machine does, but that he was acting off baseline. That's what Jane needed to know. Is he within his baseline behavior, or is he off somehow? Hard to tell with a quick observation. But she could, if her mind was prepped correctly. That she went and got a gun...well.....humans often act irrationally. He had no idea that would be the outcome, but made no sudden moves. Wise, really. Jane was playing her in order to play him...make him off base, make him slip up. That she took it those extra steps..well.....crap happens. It's what Jane does...poke around, poke at people, and see what they betray when they're off balance. If he was within baseline, then Jane would figure he was off track. He uses others in this way quite often in the series.

@@scottclark3761 Nope, sorry, bro. I've encountered waaaay too many females who constantly jumped to stupid conclusions and wouldn't change their minds. You can't build a relationship on that, so I gave up on them, but some of those women did end up married to some poor schmucks. But I can just imagine how those toxic wives must have perked up excited when they saw this pandering scene.

@@jbtechcon7434 I feel bad for you, man. I hope you're choosing better women these days. But in this scene I think it's obvious Jane was setting her up to be hypervigilant to her hubby. The talk of the daughter....you notice he was leading her. Convincing her he knew more than he did. Boosting her confidence in her intuition. He used her like a tool, and played her like a fiddle. She was the weaker one in the relationship. So you use the weak link. It's manipulative as all hell. But that's Jane. As for the viewers, yeah. I am sure the less observant women were nodding along. Simon Baker is a handsome and charming enough dude to do that sort of thing. That's the point. You can lead someone anywhere, if you make them think it was their own idea. Especially if you're attractive.

@@scottclark3761 Your own description of the scene makes it sound like Jane murdered a dude by manipulating his wife! Every single thing you said he did there could be done to an innocent man using a toxic female as a weapon.

He couldn't have known they had a gun, or that she was going to get it. He was concentrated on the husband. But it was the consequence of his manipulations. And, if you follow the series, revenge is kinda his thing. I think he was surprised, but kept his wits about him. An emotional person with a gun isn't the time to be making sudden movements. So he was ok with what happened, but no, there's no way he could have known ahead of time. He was just seeing where the chips fell.
