Watch out for the scouts: Signe Bjørg Jensen at TEDxCopenhagen 2012

Scouting is a true worldwide movement. Try travelling from Greenland to South Africa, and from New Zealand to USA and you will be able to find members of the scouting organisation.
Most people know what scouts do. But do they know why they do it? Since age six Signe has been a scout and for the last 10 years a scout leader -- and she knows exactly why.

In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. to me the scouts is home, I've always been bullied at school, but when I came to the scouts it felt like I had a save space where I could be myself. I've been a scout since I was 4 and I plan to stay until I'm no longer able to. When I tell people I'm a scout I get all kind of reactions, not always positive, but It doesn't matter, because those who do make mean remarks are the most clueless to what we do and also the peole who always enjoy themselves if they come along. To me scouts are family!

I will share this at our training session, the "RoundTable" Ms Bjorg is to be congratulated for her service to our children. Even one boy helped is better than no boys (or girls.... look at that Patrol on the stage!) helped, yes? As to the negative comments below, yes, there are poor Scout programs. It does depend on the quality and training of the Adult Scouter. Yes, there are "other" Scout organizations. That does not demean their quality or effectiveness. Yes, there are Adult Scout Leaders who betray the trust of their responsibility to their Scouts. They should be found out and eliminated and brought to trial, as appropriate. The BSA has many safe guards and training in place but sometimes the "bad apples" do slip thru, and sometimes the training and standards are ignored. That said, as John Muir said, "The mountains are calling and I must go." Good Scouting to you all!

Sry to break it for All of you, but she is not a scout she is from a Danish Foundation called FDF which in their own opinion says they Are not scouts, and for more proof try looking at her uniform she does not have the international scout badge or the scarf around her neck. This is in fine video... But there is one major fail FDF is not a member of WOSM so there therefore they are not actual scouts but the do a lot of the same stuff like "real" scouts... I'm also a scout but a member of the Danish KFUM (YMCA) scouts who are a member of WOSM... But beside from that it's a good video that shows all the good things about being a scout it's just sad that it's told by a person who actual not are a member of a scout organisation that is a member of WOSM

Unfortunately, our scouting experience was not positive. My daughter was basically shunned by the other girls for not having the same religious affiliation and not attending the same school. In four years they didn't even have one camp out. They did stay in the leaders family cabin one night, but weren't allowed to play outside. They made smores, in the oven, which the girls weren't allowed to help with. Very disappointing.

OK - So the already FDF-movement took inspiration from BP's "Scouting for boys" to ad outdoor activities to their already broad roster of sparetime activities. Now orchestral music and outdoors activities seeems to all that's left. The two pillars of the FDF are Christianity and Nationalism. - And while spirituallity is a part of the scout movement, it is anchored in internationalism. On several occations the ruling body of the FDF has taken up the vote, and rejected to join the scout movement. They like the activities, but neither the purpouse or the values. I do however respect both her and the FDF, and I can see how it would ease the comunication not to go into details and things getting lost in translation. Never the less: She is in fact not a scout!

  • @mathiasjensen5932

true... but FDF is no more of a Nationalist movement, than the scout movement. FDF were founded 5 years before the scout movement, and therefore has its own identity to protect. FDF would throw 117 years of historical identity away, if it became a scout corp... it would gain absolutely nothing from joining the scout movement, cause of the splendid relations it has with the scout movement already.

It’s kinda sad to me that she calls them her kids and considers herself the most important person in their lives. I’ve seen this many times over the years as a teacher. It’s almost always childless women. They seem to think they are everything to the kids, but in reality just meeting for an hour a week is nothing at all. They don’t realize that their parents actually do all of the real work. Kids can act sweet for one scout meeting per week. I’m sorry, but it’s an absolute fact that the parents are completely raising the child never a teacher or coach or scout leader. Those people all can have an influence, just like all humans can have a deep and life changing influence on anyone they meet…even in one meeting or 50. That boy didn’t become a carpenter because of her, but that’s what she is saying. Just be humble. God makes them wonderful. Their parents do 99%. Be a good human to everyone always just to make the world a better place for everyone and no need to tell ourselves we are the ones that made them have a good life or “become awesome human beings”.
