Great video, very clear explanation. Would a 2 TB USB 3.0 flash drive work as well as the Seagate?

4TB is supported on the ROKU Ultra HD|4K|HDR That is, with the SEAGATE Expansion external desktop hard drive, that comes with a 12v ac adapter to power it. I have used the Handbrake software for years and never noticed the ROKU presets in recent versions. That setting is AWESOME!! Since ROKU's codec library is limited, I have been forced to convert MKV and some AVI files to MP4, and the results are stunning in Handbrake software. I saved space too. ONE MORE THING! I recently realized that you need to check the AUDIO language before Encoding. MKV files can have more than one audio language. In the AUDIO TAB selection, click the drop box (or boxes) and choose your language.

@@SeleTraining - No. I have over 980 movies on my existing HDD and was running out of room. My wife got me 2 hard drives and a ROKU ULTRA for Xmas. A 2TB (SSD) and a 4TB (mechanical). I wasn't sure if the 4TB would work, being all of my existing media players for the TV have a 2TB limit I didn't want to take a chance that the ROKU would not accept 4TB. With that many movies, I am using the extra hard drives as a backup for my movies. I lost 700+ movies 5 years ago when my son dropped a hard drive onto the stone hearth of the fireplace. It took me 5 years to get back what I lost.

I know how genius it is and I love using my flash drives to play movies and tv shows on my Roku ultra but I wish to experiment connecting an external Blu ray drive to the Roku, they’re not cheap and was hoping someone has already tried it before I have to and find out whether it may or may not work.

Yes, that works great. Most will still limit you to 2TB though.

Does the Roku Media Player app on the Roku Ultra support 265 and 264 formats? I have a Hisense Roku 58" tv and I love the app for using my 4tb WD drives, one for movies and one for tv shows also recently bought my brothers a 50" Sharp roku tv just for the roku media player app. Would like to know for portable use.

Yes it supports both 264 and 265 formats.

Do you have an updated video on this? For example with a 5 TB hard drive and a newer Roku ultra 2022 version? Or what other ways would you suggest getting movies off of an external hard drive onto the TV. Can I use Chromecast or fire tv? I like to be able to do this without miracasting all the time on my phone. And also if you could address the NTFS file system with the Roku or Android that would be great.

As far as I’ve seen the Roku has not been improved to expand beyond the 2TB limit with the USB port. I have seen a Roku enabled TV and that port didn’t have the limitations.

In fact they didn’t expand or improve anything, the new Ultra Roku the 80$ model has no USB port at all.

Hi thank you for the video do you happen to know does it have a repeat option as I want to have a video that is 4 minutes long on repeat for a couple hours? I want to know if that was an option before I purchase thank you.

Yes, When you select a video on the Roku video player you can press * and there is an option to repeat.

I noticed when following your tutorial on handbrake that when I select same as source in video section the roku preset it changes the setting back to 30 so I select preset first then change it to same as source. But it still comes outputs a a file size between 5-7 GB probably because its blu ray movie

That would be with full resolution. You can change it to a lower resolution if you want a smaller file size.

Can you remove the USB safely. Is there an "Eject" icon? I have to assume that the ROKU is read only and it is safe to unplug while not using the media player APP.

It's a combination of the video format and the TV size. I've found the bars are necessary to get the higher resolution for my TV. You can certainly reduce the resolution on the converted image or change the TV format but it doesn't look as good.

I have been using a passport drive with my Ultra with no problems. My question is . . . I may be going to mac. Will a mac formatted USB drive work with Roku. I cannot seem to find out.

I have not tried it but ROKU will read NTFS formatted drives and I’ve heard you can format NTFS on a Mac.

What file format does the hard drive need to be formatted in?

What about the protection on the disc does the mkv program take it off automatically ?

I have a 32 inch TCL Roku TV and it runs my 8tb WD external hard drive just fine... It's one of the large desktop versions with it's own power source so that may play a part in it working... It did get a little laggy on loading the movies (but they played fine once loaded) when I had them all in one big file but that was corrected by creating subfiles by genre like Horror, Comedy, Western ect.

Hi The Roku Ultra I have doesn't have a shut down button, only restart. Will I damage the eternal hard drive if I shut it down by clicking on the off switch on my surge protector? Thx in advance

It works either way but I personally like the USB 2.0 cable option. That way you don't have to connect power.

@@SeleTraining Hi, Thanks for your response. So I tried the power hub and and got the same result. So I have the 2020 Ultra, running a 3.0 usb powered 1TB passport ultra HD . What happens to me is , that I start streaming a video and within 45 sec of play it jumps to the loading screen and it stays there. This specific File is 30GB (video file) . Do you think its the size of the file or am I missing something here?

@@andytaveras9532 Make sure the hard drive is formatted to NTFS. It could also be the file size. I use handbrake to shrink the file down for any bluray files and most of those are under 10GB now.

Is NTFS the only format that will work? Will ExFat work? Trying to figure out a good solution as I mainly use a mac computer. Thank you

ExFAT is not supported. The ROKU supports FAT16, FAT32, NTFS, EXT2, EXT3, and HFS+. But be aware the file size limitations are 2GB or 4GB on the FAT formats which is why NTFS is a better choice for Windows. HFS+ would be the best choice for Mac. But a Mac and PC can both read NTFS or HFS+.

You can use Handbrake to convert the HVEC 265 files to MP4 and then they will work.

This doesn't work for me at all. I followed all the instructions and have a Roku Ultra. I even bought the amazon USB 2.0 cable. I'm getting a message on my roku when opening the player that just says (Roku Media Player Connecting to a LDNA Media Server - To play or view content from a network Media Server, first make sure your Media Server is online.) Sounds like the Roku only takes a network Media Server and an external HD is NOT a network media server. Any ideas?

You’ll need to connect to the Roku media player app to see the external hard drive. Then it should show the USB drive in the list. If it’s not there it’s probably not connecting to the USB hard drive correctly.

I don't understand what the problem with larger files is. NTFS doesn't restrict file sizes. It's nearly impossible to learn about the specific characteristics of the Roku Ultra usb port. They tell you nothing! I just got one and needed to watch your video to even find how to use it at all. Plug in one of those 3.0 drives and it won't even open the on screen menu option associated with the damn thing. You teased us with some type of problems playing larger mkv files. I'm curious about specifics. I'll need to buy a 2.0 extension to slow the speed of my drives so they'll be compatible, but I'm still curious about what other difficulties I might encounter. I suppose trial and error may be my only real option. I suspect the limitations of the thing plays a large roll in why they fail to mention it in all of their literature and and tips offerings.

I think the Roku uses some older technology with limitations for the Ultra. It would not be hard for them to make it work with hard drives over 2TB and provide enough power for USB 3.0 but so far they have not done it. Its interesting because I could get a 5TB hard drive to work with my Roku TV with the same software so it definitely is a hardware specific limitation. I spent a couple hours on the phone with their tech support and had to raise it to their second tier support to confirm the 2TB limitation. You would think that would be printed in the manual. I had problems with super large files. Not sure exactly at what point but probably over 16GB. That typically is only going to happen with a long Blu-ray movie at full resolution and it also limited the number of movies I could get on a 2TB hard drive. I chose to compress them so most movies are 1-3GB in size. The resolution is perfectly acceptable for my use and I can easily get 1000 movies on my hard drive.

@@JaySummersMegatron It's interesting because my Roku TV allows a 5TB drive to connect but I do have to use the USB 2.0 cable. Not sure of other media players. The Roku menu and remote are so good I don't really intend to use anything else. Hopefully they will update the hard drive connectivity soon.

So its exactly like connecting the drive directly to the tv? You still can't see any movie info or pictures..

It will show a directory of all the movies and keeps track of where you stop playing so you can return to it later.

So All the Movies on my HDD are AVI,They have to be changed to MP4?

I don't believe the Roku Premier has the USB port so you can't attach and external hard drive. You could still use media player for other media connections though.

@@tracychaddon6460 No that is strictly to power the device. However, you may be able to plug the external hard drive into the TV USB port if it is a smart TV. The Roku media player can then access files on that drive.

Make sure the software is set to the correct language track. Also it may offer multiple videos to convert. Some may be other languages or no sound.

The history is stored in a file and can be exported but depends on which browser you use.

No longer works. Roku updated Roku Media Player and no longer plays movies from external hard drive correctly. Anyone aware of tv box that can play both Roku (netflix) from hdmi and external hard drive via USB? My old tv only had HDMI connector. thanks

It's still working for me with the latest update. I also have a 50" TCL Roku TV. It runs all the apps and has the media player and USB connection for an external drive. Just don't use a drive larger than 2TB and it should work.

@@SeleTraining Problem is with Roku Media Player App updates. Each time they wipe out new group of people. I survived the previous update with no problem but May '21 update caused audio distortions. I check the hard drive on laptop just to make sure and it worked fine playing movies. I really believe the true solution is to move away from Roku media player app as it will eventually fail. I was just thinking of getting new smart tv (they have gotten alot cheaper now) and just plug roku in for streaming (HDMI) and external hard drive (via USB) and let the TV handle the files. What I want to make sure of is the TV I get will play my external hard drive (have about 75 movies on it). I wonder if store will let me connect to TV before purchasing to see if it will play. This is for my son (I don't really watch TV that much).

@@lukeallison3622 I don't use a Mac so not sure of the options but generally when you erase and external drive it should provide NTFS. Otherwise you may have to format it some other way and see if the Mac can read/write to it after formatting.

Can you use any roko ultra ? Even the lt one?

The LT does not have a USB port for an external hard drive but you could load movies onto the microSD card. It works but would be limited.

@@KalElDaily After digging into it more it looks like the Roku Ultra LT only uses about 2GB of the MicroSD card so it isn't a good option for storing movie files. The Roku Ultra with USB is only $20 more so I'd go that route to get up to 2TB of storage on an external hard drive.

If you get a high speed thumb drive it will work but the basic ones are too slow.

Another well explained and informative video! Keep up the good work! Sadly Handbrake opens up a whole can of worms for conversion noobs like me! First off, I downloaded the newest version of handbrake(1.4.2) but it told me my less than 1 yr old $1000+ desktop didn't have the proper Microsoft framework(5.0.0), so I had to search and search for that OLD version and install it before handbrake would even work. Finally I found it then handbrake worked fine. Secondly, I thought I'd cut out the middle man(MakeMKV) and just convert the dvd's using handbrake(found another "so so" video with a tutorial for that), but it too ran into the exact same horrible and frustrating issues VLC had(playbacks not working, audios not matching, and so on). Which I gave up on and never looked back(after giving it a fair chance, about 25 tries!!)! So finally after about 10 tries on handbrake, with multiple different settings changes, I finally gave up on converting them with handbrake as well! Ultimately and Thankfully, Because of this video and following these exact steps,(along with Sele's other MKV tutorial) I can take my MKV converted files and compress them(6GB files usually end up at 800-900MB...Very Nice!) without any problems. I will say though, if you're a stickler for details as I am, there will be a noticeable(yet acceptable) difference between the quality of the DVD's look/sound and the compressed file's look and sound! It's not really "bad", but it's definitely noticeable(slight fussiness around objects/people edges, words, and during some scene transitions mainly), especially in high CG scenes. Overall the color won't be as bright/crisp and watching them side by side will probably ruin the experience for you, so I don't recommend it(Stay as oblivious as possible lol). It might even be the players fault, but I've tried iTunes, Movies and TV, WMP, VLC and they all were noticeably lesser quality! Just keep that in mind before throwing away those bulky DVDs!

Yes the combo of handbrake and makemkv is the right solution. If you prefer higher resolution you can change the output setting in handbrake so it does not compress so much. It’ll take up much more space but looks better.
