📺 ABOUT THIS VIDEO :
Having never used Izotope Ozone to mastering any tracks before I thought I’d give it a go. I’ve taken some of what I would normally do on outboard equipment and transferred it to the Ozone mastering system.
I hope you can get some great from this…I didn’t think it was too bad for my first go :)

This is so SO helpful! I really appreciate how you balance between using your technical knowledge and ears when mastering. Honestly, if you hadn't have said you only had a few minutes with ozone before this video I would have had NO idea. You were using it as if you had been using it for years. I also admire the way you approach mastering. I have a tendency to make the track as loud as possible, but end up missing so many steps along the way (like filtering the super low boomy frequencies like you did). I think the most important thing I learned from you is to not overthink every little thing in every plugin. More times than not I end up ruining my mix with either crazy EQ cuts or wacky Exciter settings that over saturate the snot out of my mix. All in all I really appreciate you sharing your knowledge and passion with us. Thank you!

Massive thanks Streaky. Always good to see how my own processes and workflows compare with the pros. Familiarity with the process and the tools and just pure experience always give the best results and I love how you got it across that mastering is about 'adding value' to the track sonically, by critical listening and having an understanding of the interactions of the tools on the mix. Would love to see you master a more challenging track - perhaps a rock track or similar thats already been squashed by overzealous use of parallel compression at the mix stage.

Love the videos Streaky!! I think a few others in the comments have mentioned this but your voice compared to the track is much louder, makes it harder to hear what you are doing to the track, and a gate on your voice to get rid of the noise/his might not be a bad idea :) Regardless its great you're going full wack into youtube, cant wait to see more videos!

Solid video. This is how real mastering engineers actually work (and more importantly- think). Pay attention to what he's saying more than the settings themselves- The settings mean nothing to the next track you do. it's about the intention that lands the right settings -time after time.

I’m not sure if you mentioned this or not in the video, but I think it’s important for the people watching this to understand that this was mastered for quality and not for loudness. This is what mastering “should” be. Sadly, this isn’t what mastering really is anymore. It’s mostly the same steps, except you’re pumping way harder into the limiter, or softclipping generously, or both, and then attempting to compensate for the crap ton of squashing and harmonic distortion that you’ve just destroyed your track with.
