Me too! And it was well spent! Now let's hope the Women's Prize comes through for me.
Greg, I really enjoyed your reaction and excitement Pulitzer Prize 2023 winner. It really lifted my spirits and made me smile. ‘Demon Copperhead” by Barbara Kingsolver was one of my favorite reads and really happy she won. “The Poisonwood Bible” was another one of her books I loved and has stayed with me over the years. I have “Trust” by Hernan Diaz on my TBR pile and I am hoping to read it in the next few months. Daniel Black’s book “Don’t Cry for Me” was an awesome book and I was able to see a couple of interviews about this book. Both interviews were great. I was impressed with Leila Mottley’s book “Nightcrawling. This young lady does have very promising career ahead. Thank you again for a great video and your excitement and enthusiasm of books it is contagious. Hope you have a great day and keep on doing what you do.

😂 🤗 I never would have guessed!
The way I screamed over the tie! 😱Truly wild and unprecedented in the Fiction category, though it's happened so much in the journalism categories over the years. I never would have considered it in Fiction (or Drama, for that matter). Still trying to process! Gut reaction is that I'm elated for Trust, an exceptional novel and what felt the most "right" to me as the predicted winner. Ties in general usually have such a copout feel to them, like just pick one already! It's not difficult. But Kingsolver was seen as being far more overdue that Diaz, so I guess this is the best of both worlds. No one in my real life cares about book prizes or awards in general, so finding this level of excitement online is the best!

I think the tie is a legacy from when they didn't name a winner in 2012. I believe the rules say that if they don't agree, they won't award a prize--but after the anger they caused in 2012, I don't think they wanted to do that again. And I'm glad they didn't!
You really should do more live videos! This was fun to watch. 😂

This feels the absolute best possible outcome for you! The one your heart wanted to win and the one your brain predicted would win. Well played Greg, you smashed it this year! I know you said you weren’t keen on trust, but I really liked it and I’m half way through demon, and let’s just say this book would need to go drastically off the rails to not end up as one of my best reads of the year. So I’m really happy with the both winners!

The funny thing about Trust is that I actually REALLY liked the third section of the book. I had almost stopped reading it because I was bored by the first two sections, so I'm glad I stuck with it. Even though I only liked half of the book, I think Diaz is a great writer and I'm eager to read more of his work. And I'm so glad you are liking Demon Copperhead! I hope that continues as you finish.

Hello from Switzerland Greg! I am lucky enough to be able to read, and review if worthwhile, English language books for a lovely old library here before they add them to their collection and I felt exactly the same as you did. I read Trust because of the hype that seemed to point to its win but also only enjoyed part 3 and the wife’s revelation. And I just fell in love with Demon Copperhead. It was Kingsolver’s time and this book and her handling of all the systemic failings in American society will surely have more impact after this prize. But that BOTH of them would win? I would never have imagined that possibility either!!! As one booklover to another, your joyful enthusiasm is so contagious. Thank you.

My 2022 favorite book of the year was Elizabeth Finch by Julian Barnes. Aside from possibly Mr. Barnes himself, I am pretty sure I am the sole person to name it their top book of 2022. 😂 But you know how there are certain writers who seem to speak to your soul and to great, elusive truths? That’s Julian Barnes for me.

I love it when people are so excited by books. I reacted similarly and immediately called my mom. Trust really hit me at the perfect time this year. I read it right when it came out and have been rooting for it ever since. Barbara Kingsolver is a favorite author of mine. She is so deserving. I feel like her writing has led her to this moment. Demon Copperhead is brilliant, empathetic and educational. I live 30 mins from West Virginia. Whenever I drive there, I am looking at it with a fresh pair of eyes and I love that.

It does feel like Kingsolver's writing led her to this moment--but in the best way possible. Kingsolver stepped up to the plate with Demon Copperhead and seriously knocked it out of the park. This was insane!!!! So crazy and it makes me excited to read both authors. I am drawn to In The Distance more than Trust and definitely want to check out The Poisonwood Bible as well. Happy for both of them and their careers! And for you and your predictions! I found it really interesting outside of the fiction category how His Name Is George Floyd was a finalist for biography but won for general nonfiction. Maybe that happens more often than I think, but that was very interesting. It was especially crazy that it was one of *four* finalists in the nonfiction category. Maybe the other categories work differently, but maybe this was a situation where the jury gave the board 3 finalists and they chose His Name instead of those options? (I think that is what happened with All The Light We Cannot See in 2015?) I thought that would be the story of the prizes this year but I am pleasantly shocked at there being even more craziness!!! I've put a hold on the Demon Copperhead audiobook from my library and hope the 8 people in front of me are quick!!! Loved your video!

Good job Greg and a fun video. I like you feel bad for King Rao and I remember it but have not read it but will be looking for it. Do you think it could sort of a make up for Diaz not winning for In The Distance (I still think about that book) and a lifetime achievement for Kingsolver as I think she could have won for The Lacuna or Poisonwood. Not to be disparaging on either book but we love a good conspiracy
@SupposedlyFun
Жыл бұрын
I think it’s a combo of both. Diaz has been building a reputation for himself since his last nomination and Trust really made a case for itself with its unanticipated timeliness. And Kingsolver has the lifetime achievement factor but you don’t have to feel guilty about it because she really knocked Demon Copperhead out of the park.

Wow! Has there been any other year in the past few decades where it felt like a battle between 2 critical heavyweights? Feels like these were two very high-profile books and they elected to award both. There were 3 books that appeared on both the New York Times and Washington Post "10 best of 2022." Trust, Demon Copperhead, and the fantastic memoir "Stay True" by Hua Hsu which ALSO just won the Pulitzer for memoir/autobiography.
@SupposedlyFun
Жыл бұрын
I need to get around to Stay True. I don't think there's been such a heated race between two books since 2011, when Freedom and A Visit From the Goon Squad took all the best-of-the-year prizes. In that case, only one made the finalists and it probably allowed Goon Squad to claim the title.

I think this might help quell the notion that the fiction jury pads the field so the preferred frontrunner can win the prize from the board. They could have left off Trust or Demon Copperhead if they really wanted to, but instead, both made the cut! And both won lol.

I need to generate this kind of excitement about the BookTube Prize. Suggestions? (Can't complain with this year's Pulitzer choices.)

It’s hard because I’ve been following the Pulitzer for more than twenty years. You’ll get there! Getting people involved in prediction videos and reactions is a good system, I think.
I cannot stop laughing. You are priceless🫣🥰

So glad they went with two rather than none. Only thing better would have been to have Rez in the mix as well. Rao does sound ambitious.

Including Night of the Living Rez would have been incredible.
Omg. I’m glad Damon Copperhead won. I read it months ago and it was wonderful.

I was reading Less when it was announced as the 2018 winner and I felt so fancy. I hope you do as well!

It goes to show: you NEVER know!
I read the announcement and I thought you would simply lose it. I have not yet read Demon. I liked Trust but I absolutely loved his earlier book In the Distance. It feels like the Jury/Board is recognizing a member of the old guard while acknowledging a new voice.

Oh, I definitely lost it. 🤪 I really want to read In the Distance, even though Trust left me a little cold. I do think Diaz is a great writer. I hope you like Demon Copperhead if you try it!

@@SupposedlyFun I encourage you to try In the Distance. Its totally different and I would not have said they were the same author. Bernie Lombardy and Shawn the Book Maniac had a zoom chat about it. If that doesnt convince you to give it a go nothing will!

I get it because I definitely am more excited about Demon.
I didn’t love Trust, but I get it. It’s just objectively well made; great writing, unique storytelling etc.

I definitely think recent headlines have made a great case for Trust.
I am so happy for you 😃 I hope she goes onto win the womens prize as well I say, hardcovers for favorites 😁

I would love to see her win the Women's Prize as well, but I don't think it will happen. It's a tough shortlist and Kingsolver is a previous winner AND just won a Pulitzer. But we will see!
the poisonwood bible is my favorite book of all time.
