@@roccosiffredi6427 What I do with my life is of no importance here. Elon Musk is overrated. And that's of course part of his marketing. He deserves great merits in making electromobility and spacetravel known and attractive to a large mass of people. No doubt he is influential, no doubt he's doing a great job. But its unfair and incorrect to claim he is the one who brings mankind from earth to space. I said charismatic braggart because it sometimes needs people like that who create ongoing hypes to fuel projects. But tell me one scientific or engineering contribution he made to space traveling that is so outstanding that he would earn the title "most influential person in history" or "super hero" as other comments here call him. What about: Wernher von Braun Hermann Oberth Robert Goddard Konstantin Ziolkowski Sergej Koroljow (engineer of sputnik) And many other great physicians, engineers and visionairies They deserve all greater merits. Its on their shoulder where Roskosmos, NASA and ESA stand. And its on their shoulders again where private space agencies and Elon Musk stand.

NORTHSTAR FPV one day it will be terraformed. At the rate we could advance our technology and our motivation without the restrictions of governments, politics, religions, criminals, etc... we could convert the planet’s atmosphere. It’s outrageous how many people insist on certain limitations being certain and permanent. Has history taught them nothing? Every time someone said something could not be done, someone managed to do it. And they were also certain that was different, that their case was truly impossible. We are going, we will expand and create and improve. We will get out among the stars one day. The only thing is, we need to survive our species problems like greed, cruelty, and oppression. If we can prevent people like the world “leaders” from destroying us all for their own sick savagery, we’ll make it. Everything we have accomplished supports this notion.

Dan Knight - I posit another hypothesis. Humans do not overcome any of their shortcomings. But colonize the solar system anyway. We spread like a plague across our neighboring stars. Over the eons of war, disaster, exploitation and continued exploration, divergent evolution occurs. Kind of like how North Koreans are shorter than South Koreans. Or horses on an island are smaller than horses on mainland. But throughout it all earth will still play Elvis Presley and Nat King cole at Christmas. Humans will live 200 years but the poor ones won’t. The truth is, nothing will stop our conquest of the stars. Not even our worst selves. That’s the scariest truth. But that’s just nature. If Elon musk doesn’t colonize mars, someone else will in maybe 100 years, maybe 500 years. Such time spans are nothing for nature. It doesn’t matter if humans have nuclear war and it takes 2000 more years before we colonize mars. 2000 years is not even a blip in the scheme of the universe. But one thing is nearly certain. There is not going to be a utopia. Ever. For man. His fires burn too hot. And his crucible was sculpted by chaos, to fight chaos. How can such a creature consciously create peace? It would be suicide.

There are international laws in place already that prohibit politics off-world. No sovereign territory may lay claim over any celestial body. The American flags planted on the Moon mean nothing in terms of ownership. No corporation or conglomerate may hold claim either, their authority extends only to the property they send. Anything outside their manufactured habitats fall under international maritime law. Essentially, once you leave your Mars home you are in near lawless territory and taking something owned by another without their permission technically makes you a space pirate :) Watch "The martian" there's a whole scene about this.
