I gave a couple of Seikos to a very good friend at work when I decided they weren’t for me. He has gone on to develop quite a serious interest in Seikos, partly because his father was a Seiko fan, partly because I had reminded him. So, for not much money someone’s interests have been kindled. I take as much happiness from that as I do from having my own watches actually.

I’m 25 and wear $1000 suits and drive a Model S, but never cared much for watches. That was until I traveled for work and everyone around the table was wearing a Rolex or Omega (I was wearing a Tayroc, kind of like Vincero) Impressing others isn’t a good reason to invest in watches, but buying a quality watch to match the other quality things in my life was a catalyst that got me interested! Overall I’ve learned that nobody cares what watch you wear and most people don’t even know what anything besides a Rolex is. Wear what makes you happy! Once you start buying nice things, you can’t go back. It’s a blessing and a curse.

My biggest 'retreat' was to China for a study abroad that hit 13 different cities. An incredible adventure and now I want to see Japan and Thailand really badly! But my only minor regret in buying watches was buying the Crownarch watch (a fashion watch). At the same time though, I think their design is unique enough that I am happy I purchased it! Still want to save up for some great heavy hitters. Side note, if you know New York well, where would you service old Russian watches like Poljot?

I think I've had more selling regrets than buying regrets. My first high end watch after a Seiko SKX diver (lol) was an all stainless Datejust that I bought from someone at work for $800. He wanted to upgrade to a two tone and I'm guessing he wasn't that familiar with the value retention. Neither was I as I sold it for just over that to buy a new GMT Master II in the early 90s. The jewelry store was offering no interest and the price was close to $3000. at the time that was the price for an all stainless model. I'm definitely regretting selling that one if you're familiar with what a new or used one go for these days.

I don't understand why people buy an expensive dive watch but then would never take it in the water. It's the quality of the build that your paying for that allows you to take it in the water and have confidence in it .Having an expensive dive watch and feeling that i should not take it in the water would be a regrettable experience for me.

Hi Teddy, Here are a couple lessons I learned from your video. 1) Sizing (including lug to lug) is a very important factor in whether you will enjoy a watch or not. Always check out the size before buying. If possible, try it out on the wrist first, as a watch can wear bigger or smaller than its listed measurements. 2) It is better to save up and get one watch we can really enjoy rather than spend the same amount of money on several 'blah' watches. May I recommend getting an Orient diver for a relatively inexpensive watch to wear in the water? I personally like the way they look better than the Seiko SKX line.

My biggest mistake was not buying that Tissot Visodate when I had the perfect chance to do it while it was being sold at a good brick and mortar store near my house, (that was shutting down operations) at an incredible price. Now I can only buy it through the internet at way higher prices. Many watches I bought years after that was because I tried to fill the gap of that Tissot Visodate.

Also bought a bunch of fashion watches when I first started collecting (The Fifth, MVMT among them), regretted them when I learned more about watches and my own passion for mechanical pieces, and sold them off at a big loss. Although I did learn that not all fashion watches are equal, and some I thought were far better value than others. MVMT was by far the worst value of those I owned. Would recommend against them. Don't be fooled by the pretty pictures.

Ye same here . I already have what i thought was an "ok" watch. Citizen Ecodrive titanium , black dial, unidirectional rotating bezel (easy to read, lightweight, rotating bezel allows me to keep track of time on multiple things at my job ,,i'm a nurse) .. But that's my JOB watch , so i thought i would buy something to wear that wasn't on the JOB , and so i did (and I do like the 1st watch that i bought) ,, but then i'm just buying another watch, and another etc .... just to see how it would look/feel/ and to maybe use it as a backup if my JOB watch or my non-JOB watch breaks , In reality, it's going to be a LONG time before I actually have a necessity to wear the "backup" watches. After a while , it just feels like i'm hoarding a bunch of watches instead of it being a "tryout" for what kind of watch suits me.

I guess I'm lucky. I got interested in watches from a restoration vid. I got the bug and immediately started watching your content and doing research. I find a lot of cross over between firearms and watch collecting. So, I took my lessons learned in the firearms world and applied them to my new found hobby. My first watch was the orient kamasu. Scratches my diver itch and I can feel good about the quality. I've picked up a couple seikos for the instant gratification. I'm planning on picking up a Tudor heritage BB with the red bezel next. That will feel about as cool as when I got my first Scar 17. I like the BB 58 but I have an 8" wrist and 41-42mm is my sweet spot. Thanks for all the help!

I've outgrown or lost interest in my 2 Citizen Eco-drives that sold for $300-$500. I honed in on them because I didn't have to change the batteries. The problem that I've had after owning my 1st one for about 13 years is that they would go into low power mode because I wear long sleeves most of the time and they would never get enough light to charge. Even with the problems, I think I would really regret selling them, because they are a part of my watch owning history. I loved them at one point in time. My 2nd was Atomic and Solar, so that really got me excited. I always have the accurate atomic clock time on my wrist and had multiple time zones and even tracked date changes with leap years. The watch just loses it's charge too often and has led me to research mechanical watches. I'm loving my $64 Seiko SNK809 for the past 2 months. Definitely interested in buying some more automatic mechanical watches. Seiko SARB line!!! Why discontinue them now that I just found out about them?!?!

I'd say my biggest mistake has been falling victim to hype and FOMO mentality too easily. Just because a watch is a forum darling or is all over KZread, it doesn't mean that *you* are necessarily going to like it. Furthermore, sometimes the super popular models also don't actually have very good resale value because everybody already has them / is trying to flip them, so ebay, etc, is flooded. Secondly, I think it's important to try to be objective about your opinions on each individual watch, rather than buying into "fanboyism" for a specific brand. Not every brand is going to do everything well on every single watch. Each watch should be evaluated objectively on its own merits.

Very nice video, I think we’ve all made mistakes when it comes to this hobby. I’ve fallen in love with so many watches only to not be in love with the way they look on my wrist. Doesn’t make me think any less of the watch, just that it’s simply not for me. Interesting that you bought the Visodate to instead of saving for the Orion. They seem very different to me, but I see the similarities in the simplicity of the dials. I’ve bought the Visodate and love it but it wasn’t a substitute for something else. I love it for what it is, a sports watch that’s a little dressy, not the other way around and I’ve been completely satisfied. I did have a hard time choosing between that and the Max Bill, but ended up going with both. Lol🤦🏽‍♀️ Great vid as always!! Kat

I have a Seiko Kinetic I bought in auction for $75 and I usually have opportunities every month to vintage Rolexes that I’d like to know more about. This may be sacrilegious but I where my watches on the inside of my wrist to minimize job-related damage. A vid on wearing preferences would be good too! Thanks

I agree with Teddy. I bought the green alpinist a year ago. I heard great reviews. After a few months later, I just wear it a few times. I should of stick with my gut and bought the sarb035. Don't get me wrong the alpinist have great specs, but it didn't have the versatility of what I was wearing. Now kinda sucks that sarb is discontinued

I think many others and I agree over the overhyping of certain watches. The Squale, SKX, while I'm sure are great watches in their own right and have a following for a reason, are not my forte. One thing is for sure, that Alpinist was nice! I think a great topic you should cover is about watches that get constantly overhyped, to the point where it's almost a sin not to like them. Wonderful video as always!

Hi Teddy, i think it is a really good idea to show what you learned from your mistakes, so new collectors could try to avoid these mistakes. I think my biggest regret is getting several mid tear watches and finishing my budget, instead of getting a one watch with high price but high horology also. I regret also getting the Squale 1521, i really like the color, i also got it after watching TGV, and i bought also a Sinn 104 for the same reason with it, both that i want to sell or trade up. I will never sell my Alpinist, nor my Cocktail time. I also regret not buying an AP Royal Oak, that i was betting on, while it was around 4K$. I would never sell my Datejusts, i have a 16234 silver dial and 1601 Rose Gold.

Great video and a very interesting topic. I have lots of regrets with watch buying but I think that's part of the journey. If you don't try different things you'll never find out what you will actually like. My suggestion is as much as you can try watches on before you buy. In the internet age that's not always easy. Something I've found very valuable is joining a watch club that meets once per month. It's a great way to get your hands on with a lot of different watches and really seeing if you truly like them.

Great video, Teddy. I like to try on a watch at an AD, get some information. Check out, whether it is easy to wear, not to heavy and in the end, be aware how much a OEM leather strap is and how much a revision costs. Before that, I would ask myself in what direction I want to go in terms of my collection or in my case watch alternatives. If I love a watch and I can enjoy it, then it is perfectly fine. If a watch (watches), fashion, devices... have the purpose to fill an inner void, then I will be disappointed.

My biggest buying mistakes are Nato straps - fell for the hype, quickly regretted it - and watches with Miyota 8xxx movements. The ones that got away are the Tissot PRS516 with ETA movement, and Orient Star Seeker GMT. Only one service mistake, sending a Seiko 7s26 to a private (but recommended) dealer for repair; the much maligned Seiko USA service center fixed it right. And SKX’s make great travel beaters.

MVMT Basin (Revolver series) has to be the biggest regret I have among watches. I used to regret my Tag too, but I started to fall in love with it. It's the Carrera Calibre 5 Date in anthracite grey, and it's stunning. The movement is okay, but the design and the size feel like a class apart.

My mistake has been buying watches too soon to each other. One was secondhand and I had to move on it, the other was new from an AD. I really love the secondhand one, its comfortable, an icon etc, the other whilst being new and twice the price is not getting the same wrist time. I remember marvelling at it, its blue dial and moon phase but now I find myself reaching for other watches in my case. I do occasionally put it one but not as often as I thought I would.

About the Alpinist's fashion versatility, I never have any issue matching it with my outfit. When I wear black, I use a black strap with it and the green dial just pops. I had people stopped me on the street asking what watch it is. If I wear a white shirt, I match it with a metal bracelet. With shades of brown outfit, I use a dark brown leather strap. It even goes with dark blue shirt and green trousers and vice versa.

Probably it is because your style complements the alpinist... And not the other way round. People who likes a pop of colour will have trouble with the alpinist. Just finding matching straps for the alpinist is a chore.

Leri Jiso I just used the most common colours in men's fashion as an example. Any neutral colour will go with the green dial. Dark blue goes well with it, and so does teal or turquoise. If you want to be adventurous, yellow will be fine too. Heck, even red.

@@PT111111 I agree with you. Never had a problem wearing the Green Dial alpinist. The Straps make all the difference with the outfits. If you want to dress it up an oyster or jubilee bracelet does the trick. On causal, I tend to keep dark Brown, Navy and black leather straps. I respect that is not for everyone, and that is what makes it special. The Limited Edition BLUE DIAL looks so boring in comparison. without the contrasting numbers and hands.. it doesn't even look like an Alpinist.

That blue Squale 1521 is a good watch for a very specific kind of person I think. You have to like the case shape, love the color blue a whole lot, and love the size. As much as I like the case shape, I think it's almost too blue honestly. It'd be a great watch for my friend, since he loves that color, but not for me and probably most people.

I can totally understand the Seiko Alpinist not being for everyone, the green dial in a world where most watch faces are either white, black or blue is polarising, and it's niche of being a tool watch with ruggedness and features in an elegant package is something only a few people can love. That said it's my favourite watch in my collection, the first mechanical I bought and I prefer wearing greens and burgundies in my outfits where others tend to prefer blues and greys, so it suits my style and I adore it.

I’m new here, but I am really starting to enjoy your videos. Story: Because of all the positive reviews, and its beauty for the $$$, I bought a Seiko SRPB41 Cocktail Time (blue dial), but regret it. First, It’s an all polished case, with no brushed finish, and at first was fine, the more I looked at it, the more bland it became. My Seiko 5 SNKK87 has much more design to it. But the biggest problem is the blue dial. I LOVE BLUE DIALS! But I wear blue all the time (almost every day for work), and it didn’t match anything. It drove me crazy. I actually passed up on a few shirts that were on sale because they didn’t match the watch...that’s insane! I think that I’m going to stick with white or silver dials for dressier watches, anyways.
