Hmmm...I've watched several youtube videos on Priuses and was told they're probably the best, most reliable car ever made (the car angel guy). They state they're extremely low cost to maintain (with the exception of the 2010-2015 ones that can have head gasket issues) and can last a long time. Some have said buying them with 200k miles is still a good buy. This video has made me re-think buying one considering the exorbitant replacement part/labor costs you're quoting.

Own a well sorted 2003 Jetta TDI using for deliveries and was considering purchasing a 2007 one owner Prius with 160k in the neighborhood for $3k as its replacement. I get the same economy in my Jetta but diesel in my area is $0.90 more expensive than regular. The Prius purchased would have saved me about $55/month ($660/yr) in gas BUT the car was still on the original hybrid battery, needed an a/c evaporator and had a check engine light for small evap leak which they were having challenges resolving. I ultimately passed because the fuel savings paled in comparison to the potential repair costs of a new battery ($2k), dash out evaporator repair ($2k), ABS brake actualtor ($2k).

I have a 2011 Prius that I bought used when it was three years old. It has 243k miles on it. Up to this point, it has given me no major issues. Had to finally get brakes at 225k miles and the AC compressor needed replacing a few years ago. In August I left the parking lights on and it had to be jumped. Figuring the original 12v battery would need to be replaced, I had it checked and it showed 100%. I've had very little noticeable decline in mpg (I never got the stellar mpg some people get) so the hybrid batteries are still in relatively good shape. The other day, my mechanic ran diagnostics on it and the only code that came up was C1392. I love the car and this Gen Prius, but know it's going to eventually need major work. It would be great if it could last another six years (150k miles) but I don't think that's going to happen without sinking a ton of money into it. My mechanic thinks I should bail on it now before it does start having problems.

If you're an idiot and go to the dealership to get a high voltage battery, then yes, you'll pay 5 or 6K. But, there are tons of aftermarket installers who will give you a new one for $2500. You can also replace the battery yourself. Also, I have a 2006 Prius with 170K, and the battery is still going strong. So this video is not exactly accurate.

They obviously build them different in the States. The one in your picture has additional headlights for a start. Not available in UK. I have two 2009 mk2 and 2010 mk3. NEITHER have EVER had an issue. The little "trunk" battery is the only factor, so I fitted tails to this battery for a small solar charger so they get a regular trickle. UK taxi versions regularly exceed 200,000 without issue and some have topped 400,000. NOTHING comes close. MPG? mk2 returns 55 running short local trips and the mk3 65 on longer runs with cruise control.

NZ DIAGNOSTICS, Thanks for the information on what to be where of! Im thinking about buying a clean 2012 prius c. 138 k. how reliable is that cvt trans?if that goes out its maga bucks, like the battery! another sour spot is the generator. iv heard from others, that they hardly ever have a problem, but if they do its 6 70 7 grand because you have to remove the whole engine and trans to replace the generator! Whats your take on that? Local mechanics love me! because im a hammer mechanic! if it dodent work i beat it with a hammer!, they dance in circles thinking of how they will take me to the cleaners! I did get advice that stated the prius c has less horse power than the regular prius, its slower, but not known to have the gasket issues! And its common to get 250 t0 300k on them. The way i drive id reach that at 115 years old!

(depleted) to 4bars...this makes car to use engine power much to run the car and car become inefficient... Kindly sir assist to tell me what might wrong with my car?
