Watch Before You Buy a 6.7 Powerstroke!

Common problems with 2011-2016 and 2017-2020 Ford diesel trucks explained. My 2011 had a glow plug/valve catastrophic failure and cost me thousands of dollars. I also experienced minor issues that aren't as well known and have done a lot of research on the various model year changes. Let me know if you have any questions.

I currently own 2014, 2015 and 2019 all 6.7 Diesels, Lariat and King Ranch’s. No modifications on any truck except front and rear bumpers. Their great work trucks for hauling and keeping are small businesses running. Once you start modifying the trucks engine for better performance they then become big boy toys. Nothing wrong with that. Great video.

I have a 2016 Platinum with the 6.7 and ZERO issues. I do short trips (taking the kids to school) and long trips (like pulling my 32' 5th wheel with a 4 Door Polaris inside in the heat to the AZ and the local deserts here in CA) and have no problems. Thing is tough as nails. I like to buy the last year of production of a certain body style as they worked out all the kinks and you save some money if you time it right. I also havent messed with the stock config other than a leveling kit, 35s, and some updated LED lighting.

Thanks for the information. I have five comments: 1) I also used to spend a LOT of money modifying engines and transmissions. While it was fun at the time, almost invariably, the changes caused problems which in turn required even more money and time. 2) Mods REDUCE resale value. 3) Many engine related mods are illegal. These will become a real pain when it comes time to sell the truck. 4) Specialty mods mean that the customizer (i.e. YOU) is the ONLY person who can address their specific issues without paying outrageous sums. That's a pain when you'd rather spend your time elsewhere. 5) Despite your effort to create an informative video, it triggered some mean spirited comments. I'm disappointed to see some viewers are so busy cooking up hostile retorts that they can't learn anything. They should just stick to flipping burgers. Based on my experiences with modifying multiple vehicles, I chose to keep my F350 stock, freeing up time and money for other purposes.

@@GRAPPAHOLICS 40 inch?? Yikes! My stock F350 tires are about 31". If you have the most common differential gears for a single rear wheel Diesel (3.55), in order to keep the vehicle speed vs. RPM unchanged, you'd need to swap to a whopping 4.58 differential gear set. Conversely, were you to change the differential in order instead of the tires to achieve the same vehicle speed vs. RPM as the 40 inch tires, you're be running 2.75 gears.

As mentioned the early 6.7 Duel turbo has a ceramic bearing which was prone to failure, throw a tone on it and beat on it on the highest setting it’s going to go. • @Garth2011

The biggest problem with any Ford is the aftermarket tuner. Folks have to get them to allow the EGR and DPF deletes pass the computers in the truck however, what most folks are doing in addition to that is using the tuner for more power etc. They shouldn't use any setting except for the stock or the next up setting, period. All of the other settings add timing and fuel which do not perform fine enough for the given air intake these trucks can supply. The same volume of air intake with more fuel adds heat and wasted fuel/soot. Timing also add more stress to the crank and lower end than it was designed for. Leave them in stock for...they will live much longer. Use the tuner for other reasons like race power etc. and you too will be buying new engine parts. Diesels so not hot rod like gas engines do without much engineering and other components. Without them, they will fail early.

Mark McClure The original clean air act stated that off highway vehicles (even production cars turned into track cars) were exempt from emissions. Trust me it’ll happen. I really want to be team Ford as I am for anything pro-American, but I just can’t with Ford. Got burned by a 2003 6.0 and a 2008 6.4 (2 engines). Then I have friends with new fords and nothing but problems. High school friend of mine bought a brand-new off the lot 2018 Platinum F-450. Truck has been a nightmare for this guy. It’s on the 3rd 6.7 engine now and he had to install an aftermarket steering stabilizer kit because Ford was not able to remedy the death wobble on the front end when he pulled his 36ft race car trailer. Isn’t what the big bad 450s are for?? Pulling big trailers? I did a ton of research before buying a new truck. I bought a 19 Denali Dually truck a few months ago and paid less than then over-priced Fords.cant see paying $10k more for a truck I’m almost guaranteed to have issues with, don’t make a shit ton of sense. Couldn’t be happier the new L5P

I run a 2011 6.7 king ranch (non-epa approved/pavement-princess model). It has 130K on it at the moment, get 20+ miles per gallon and is just smooth running. I replaced the glow plugs 7 months ago as a precaution and run a mini maxx tuner(stock tune-use it as a monitoring device) with 4" straight out. I will replace the Turbo after this year's tax return and I think my truck will have a long life ahead of itself. I never abuse it(hot rod it) and change the filters/oil every 5k with good synthetic oil. I have no fears of this truck shatting the proverbial bed so to speak. That being said I wouldn't shy away from a cheap 2011, just change out the glow plugs as soon as possible with the updated OEM plugs and replace the Turbo with the one this gentleman recommended. About half the tq stock 🤣🙄Gross combined is about double too so you can't tow as much as the new ones. I think the point of this video is ford diesels are complete dog shit since they went away from the 7.3.

Scott L My main point was that the 6.7 is a great motor but don’t ignore its weaknesses from the early years. With great power comes great problems

Babylon falling I’m with you on that one!! My 7.3 might take me 10 minutes longer (when towing) to get to destination but I’ll get there problem and stress free, and I know I’ll make it home lol

I loved my 7.3 but I got rid of it and got a 6.7 because let’s face it they’re dinosaurs. Mine was leaf spring front so it rode like shit, the motors are great but the transmissions are garbage, and with the HUEI injectors it’s pricey to get injectors, valve cover gaskets, and a new HPOP.

Decent sound... but the best exhaust sound IS the 6.4 stock turbo set up. It's very smooth and more melody to it. The spool down on the 6.7 is a little messy and up and down, still sounds cool though.

That’s interesting. I’d try to have someone find where the noise is coming from and go from there. Squeaking could just be ball joints or something but idk about the chattering

How much money would you have spent if you did a little research before you bought it and replaced known bad parts at the same time as spending money on delete. This guy is a FOOL. “Pretty fancy turbos ahead of their time”

  • @randbauer8820

I don’t think the turbo was really revised for 2013. My buddy went thorough 2 stock turbos in 100k on a 2013. After that he did the same borg Warner turbo you have, upgraded fuel system, and egr delete. Now makes 700hp to the wheels. He has run that setup from around 100k to 200k. He just can’t seem to break the thing

  • @GRAPPAHOLICS

Sorry that he went through that to get to that point, but good to hear this setup is working out well after an additional 100k
