WATCH BEFORE WINTER! - DIY Backyard Chicken Coop | Make sure you do these things | JR'S Life
In this episode I am answering the top questions I’ve gotten about over-wintering the chicken coop including how the heck they are surviving this polar vortex of a winter we’re having. I also share the things I would 100% do again.
TIMESTAMPS:
3:52 How has the chicken coop held up over the winter?
4:50 Do the chickens use the coop differently in the winter?
5:21 Did I have to make any changes to their food or water setup for winter?
6:51 What are the coldest temperatures the chickens have experienced?
7:10 How do the chickens stay warm enough?
7:38 How can you tell if the chickens are not warm enough?
8:46 Is there any source of heat in the chicken coop?
9:20 Are there any safety concerns with having a heater or heat lamp in the coop?
11:07 Have the chickens changed during the winter?
11:54 Would I do anything differently if I were to do it again?
14:17 Where I added insulation
15:50 Chicken coop feature I would definitely do again!

    After hours of watching chicken coop videos, I finally found one for Canadian winter. Thank you for sharing. I learnt that chickens lay eggs according to the daylight hours. Shorter days mean no eggs. A light on a timer can be used to add an extra 2/3 hrs to their days. You don’t want to add too much more. Also the poop/manure will produce extra heat if it’s on the floor with hay/straw and there’s more chickens. I wonder if adding hot water bottles will help.

  • @JRSLife

    Thanks so much 😄 yea heater works well and they love the window and it really helps brighten up the coop! For where we have the coop tucked in they get a bit of overhead covering from trees and then in the coldest months I wrap the outside of the run with poly which keeps the wind out and keeps it cozy enough in there that they like to come outside. We can get 1.5-2 feet of snow at times here so the run isn’t strong enough to withstand that kind of weight but keeping the wind out through the sides seems to really help.

    Does the heater raise the temp of the whole coop? Ty, getting ready for winter over here in Ok.

  • @JRSLife

    @JRSLife

    2 жыл бұрын

    Good question! Depending on the size of your coop (mine is 4”x3”) it will cut the cold and keep the water from freezing. It gives off infrared heat so it doesn’t give off heat like a heater, it’s more subtle than that so it’s safe for the chickens to lay against and won’t cause a fire. It’s definitely a nice and necessary addition depending on how cold your winters get. Hope that helps 🙂

  • @JRSLife

    @JRSLife

    How far is the coop away from your house? We run an extension cord out to the coop for the heater which helps with the water not freezing. If this isn’t an option, other things you want to do are make sure the coop is well insulated and really block the wind. You’ll likely be needing to bring out fresh water more frequently still though depending on temperature. I hope that helps 💐

    That’s great info to share thank you! 😁 We are going to do the plastic wrap as well as we continue into winter. We’ve been able to have them out in the yard a lot so far this season but the plastic will be good to cut the wind in the really cold months. That’s so good that your hens are laying again! Ours have just finished molting so we are waiting for them to start up again. Their winter coats are looking great though 🙌

  • @JRSLife

    @JRSLife

    2 жыл бұрын

    Hey thanks for checking out our coop 😁 yep it is insulated all the way around except for their small door which I think leaves a tiny bit of ventilation. The main thing is to keep them out of the wind. I updated their run too this year by adding poly all around it for the winter so their run would be out of the wind as well and they can come outside more on the colder days.
