Don’t be ignorant. It wasn’t planned in any way, shape, or form by the auction house. The shredder, controlled by a remote held by an accomplice and imbedded by the frame, malfunctioned and prevented the painting from being fully shredded. Obviously it held some form of a publicity stunt, but that doesn’t deem it less worthy of praise. It’s art, it’s meant to be art, and art is meant to be seen.

The art world is awash with dirty money. Artists are often assessed on how much their paintings are worth. People his street art out of it's original location and sell it. This is a wonderful act of contempt towards the art world by Banksy. Who else would do this? I think we all know the answer. Well done Banksy, always surprising and long may it be so.

  • @kevinpitt2203

Penile 1 - A valid point. It certainly did rise in value to the person that brought it. Although Banksy would not have got the extra value as the buyer agreed to go through with the sale. You are assuming that it would have been worth less if it had gone all the way through. I am not so sure. If you are insinuating that Banksy is like any other artist, then that falls down as his street works are of no value to him, and sadly are of value to those who own the wall, and rip it down to sell for themselves. It is possible to be too cynical you know. To me Banksy is a breath of fresh air to the art world.

(only thing left untouched is the red balloon).

people who own their own money can decide what they want to spend it on. they can donate to charity or buy a painting. that's what capitalism is all about. but if anyone even suggest that rich people should help support the lower class in any way (example: higher taxes) you get labeled as a communist.

Such genius! How thought provoking is that! Fresh respect for Banksy! Questions.. How did he get a disguised, battery operated shredder to go off ONLY at the sound of a gavel coming down given that if it had gone off prematurely, or too late, the whole thing would have been utterly meaningless? Is the painting worth more, now, or less? Did the buyer have a cardiac arrest? Was nobody, in the gallery, in on it?

  • @wallacewallaby5782

My guess is that the artist had someone at the auction remote control the shredder and since the painting became damaged, they wouldn't have to proceed with the purchase.

I don't see how a painting could be worth 1.4 million, especially that one that is mostly white canvas. Art is so stupid, anyone could have drawn a girl holding a red heart balloon, so I just don't get why it was special, and why it shredding makes it more valuable. But I guess it's a good hustle for the artist. Probably took him 15 minutes to make that picture, a week or so to get the framing worked out and proper for it, and then sold it for $1.4 million, so he made a ton for basically no work.

Double Pownage The hard part is sculpting the Statue of David, or painting the Mona Lisa. Nothing about this artist's work is hard. And it doesn't surprise me at all, that he'd be willing to destroy his art, when he knows he can just remake it just as simple as he made it to begin with.

Paul The buyer does set the price. How do you know what something is worth? You only know the value of something based on what the BUYER pays for it. If I put something up for auction and it doesn't meet my reserve the BUYER has told me that it is not that valuable.

In one of the games and character offers to sell you something for a ridiculous amount of money under the condition that you don't get to know what it is before purchase. The thing he sells is not the object but the prestige one will obtain by being able to purchase this incredibly expensive one of a kind thing. That's what this is.
