Wat Phra Phai Luang - Sukhothai Historical Park, Thailand
The “Monastery of the Great Wind”...
Wat Phra Phai Luang is located near the Sanluang gate in the North city wall, just outside of the old walled town of Sukhothai.
The temple dates to the end of the 11th century or early 12th century before the founding of the Sukhothai Kingdom, which makes it one of the oldest monuments in Sukhothai.
It is believed to have been built during the reign of the Angkor King Jayavarman VII, who built some of Angkor’s most impressive monuments including the Bayon Temple.
Wat Phra Phai Luang was built by the Khmer when the area around Sukhothai formed part of an outpost of the Khmer empire and was dedicated to Vishnu. During the Khmer period the temple was in the centre of the town.
Later in the Sukhothai era, the temple was .converted into a Theravada Buddhist temple but remained outside the town now surrounded by the protective moat........
