for forge or foundry
TypicaL 40k watt waste oil burners use about 4 liters of waste per
hour I have built units that use up to 2 gallons per hour or about
145,000 watts I use oil burners for many things mostly for burning
tree stumps out of the ground, waste oil burners work great for
forges or smelting metal. Ive built many types of waste oil burners
from syphon nozzle waste oil burners to drip feed to vaporizer
coil waste oil burners . these also can be used to build a furnace
and heat very large areas . the most efficiant waste oil burner
i have biult is a siphon nozzle
atomizer and it uses about 4 liters of waste oil per hour .
do not burn transmission oil it is toxic .Oil Burner Designs
Drip Style
? Low Tech. No atomization.
? Natural Draft possible (no electricity)
? Mother Earth News’ design is widely used. Designed in 1970’s.
? Today’s motor oil has additives that resist degradation and allow engines to run
at higher temperatures. In effect, waste oils are now much harder to burn cleanly
and likely require preheating and atomization.
“Gun Style”
? Conventional fuel oil burners
? Modest efficiency improvements over time - although overall burner design hasn’t
changed much
? As homeowners upgrade to modern heat pumps, these old style burners are
ubiquitous in scrapyards and can be purchased for very little cost.
? Most can be operated without modification with up to 20% biodiesel. (B20)
? Predictable issues with higher ratios of biofuels - ‘gelling’ and damage to rubber
seals. Commercial biofuel safe pumps and preheaters available.
? Very convenient, tight design.
Siphon Nozzle
? Requires high capacity air compressors
? LP can be used in lieu of air
? Fuel pumps not required
? Preheating for reliable viscosity
? “Constant level device” to maintain consistent fuel flow
? Simple DIY nozzles can be made from off the shelf hardware
? Manufactured nozzles available for retrofitting gun style burners for Waste Oils
Babington Style
? Fuel flows OVER nozzle, rather than through nozzle
? Imagine fine mist from a whale’s blowhole
? Filtration matches your pump - not your nozzle
? Requires sump and pump
? Same preheating issues with alternative fuels

You requested failures. Here is a video of a Delavan nozzle I have been working with. I have pressurized diesel for fuel. Pressurized Air is filtered for water and trash. The biggest flame I could muster is about a foot long. The nozzle is very touchy. It floods. It is very subject to water in air. It is very subject to air bubbles in fuel. At the end of the video I finally got a 12 inch flame. kzread.info/dash/bejne/qKGbl5ezeqWto6w.html I am going to the big chamber type chamber .

I built one in this style, works great. Only suggestion would be to use a sheet of stainless steel as a liner to help with radiant heat. In mine the insides get yellow hot fast while the outside doesn’t get hot enough to glow.

THAT IS EXACTLY THE BEAST REQUIRED!! THANK YOU SIR! MY biggest concern with the build was flame impingement......any time your mixture of oil droplets and air you create shoot (IE putting a spoon in a candle flame?) this I think will ELIMINATE that worry! THE BUILD STARTS NOW! 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥 🔥THANK YOU🔥 Off to scrounge up a combustion chamber, I will film the initial test and First heat in my mini forge! I may have to instant message it to you? I’ve never posted (don’t know how) here? GREAT VIDEO! ABOVE AND BEYOND THE CALL!! ❤️🇺🇸GOD BLESS OUR UNITED STATES ❤️🇺🇸

Use heavier main burner tubing to conduct more heat to the rear end & rap the end in hi-temp insulation to increase the temp in that area.

I am using a waste oil burner to heat my 720m³ shop. Using about 1000 liters for the winter season each year. But im lucky, i have a scrap yard accros the street that gives me the oil. For people that just want to try it it is kind of hard to get that much oil somewhere. And then you have to somehow transport it home and store it. Its just not worth the trouble. But because we get it from acros the street we just pick up a few 200L barrels on the forklift. And yes it works great. My shop isnt perfectly insulated, lots of places that arent air tight by far. But still with -5c outside we do manage to get it 25c inside the shop(wich is way to hot to work)

excellent comment friend , you have told the truth where so many others are selling a lie , thanks brother right on man for telling us this , i hope more people see your comment because after my little bit of testing i realised waste oil heat is not practical at all , i tell people you need barrels not gallons lol . im having alot of luck with my wood burner , people are giving away firewood every direction you turn your head

  • @gabbermaikel

    @gabbermaikel

    6 жыл бұрын

Over here i have to pay about €55-60 for 1m³ of firewood wich would be around the 450kg mark. And wood is about 4kw of energy per kg. That would mean that i would need a shitload of wood if i where to burn as crazy as i go with the oil. The other side of it is that you can just put wood everywhere. No problems with police that dont like you transporting a load of wood(you can get in trouble if you transport lets say 1000 liters of waste oil) And no risk of it leaking and getting you a HUGE fine for leaking waste oil in to the ground. So yeah all in all the waste oil is only usefull for those that have a easy way to get it, and a good way of storing it. And also dont forget you need to clean the waste oil burner way more then you need to clean a wood burner. With the woodburner just clean out the ashes and once a year the fleu and you good to go. With a waste oil burner you need to clean out all the black crap that keeps building up everywhere. And if you have a bit of spillage its a huge mess to clean up(as you have discoverd and we have seen in your vids). So would i ever run a waste oil burner inside the house? NO NEVER. Would i use a wood burner in my house? Yeah no problem, those can be really nice if you have the space for it.

hi Nobox, this looks great, i''ve finished constructing my furnace and only after a few firings with an Air/diesel syphon nozzle i've deceided they are too much trouble. (also so noisy with my huge air compressor going all the time) so i was looking about for something simpler and found your vid. I've got a nice dyson housing for a blower. i just need to weld up the little combustion chamber. Do you have any advice on the shape/length? do you still use this one? (i've seen another that's a cylinder but it's upright). i'll let you know how it goes :0 cheers for the great vid o/

I just built a waste oil heater out of an old oil stove, it's minus -15 ( garage size 20 x 16) takes around 25 minutes to go +10 which is easily warm enough, however we frequently experience -30's to -40's for months on end. ( add the / with wind makes it dangerously cold ) I've only tried Pennzoil ultra synthetic 20 / 50 (Last oil change) I used about 1/5 gas mixture to thin it out. But am wondering what kind of effects I would experience with normal 10/30 motor oil - I did the mix with diesel last time and it didn't seem to make any difference, ( I start the stove with gas on small piece of rag ) For people with unlimited $funds propane probably would be so much easier. ( I always used wood stove ) but am getting to old / injured / pain which prevents putting up enough wood to last through the 4-5 months till spring. Thanks for the video, am looking forward to building a foundry.

I just convert my typical wood burner into an oil burner. No fans, simple construction. Max heat i’ve got is almost 600” celsius with around 1.8 to 2liters oil. I can not say how much is the power in Kw. Usually spend 0.8 to 1.3 L oil per hours in cold days / under 0 “ celsius. My garage is 8.5m x 4m . When burner work 2 hours or more temperature in garage is 22-23” celsius

You are wasting fuel out your ignition port. Converge the end of the combustion chamber, and put a small venturi in the exit tube. Then the flame will at least be blue w/ no smoke. More efficient. Hotter by 25 percent.

Invest in a tripod! All that running around holding the camera makes it difficult to see clearly. And repetitious comments are unnecessary - unless you're looking to make a long, boring video. You are an intelligent guy with interesting projects but you lack video skills. Try slowing down and focusing on what you are doing and maybe, a little scripted narrative and you will have a decent channel.
