That’s why I built this, I like the idea of putting in the work, saying it’s mine and that I built it and saving money. Not to mention I have a ton of oil with the shop to get rid of, what better way than heating my shop.

What kind of bowl did you use for inside firebox? And did you have any issues with running hair dryer nonstop?

Stainless steel dog bowl starting out then found a stainless steel sauce pan that worked even better. Hair dryer started sounding sick by the end of winter but still ran, it was one of my wife’s old ones so it had been used hard a year before that. I had the button zip tied on cool so it wasn’t getting burnt up.

I see alot of ideas how to make heaters using waste oil fo rheat, but it always comes down to what will the insurance company think of the idea and if it's covered or not. Kinda late to think about it after a fire and find out you're not covered.

What keeps the fire from traveling back through the copper supply pipe and reaching your used oil vessel??

    A) there is fan forced air blowing through the outer tube, fan forcing a clean burn and feeding the fire along with cooling the copper tube carrying the oil to prevent coaking up of oil in the tube. B) for the fire to travel back to my oil container it would have to burn up 4’ of copper tubing to get to the funnel then jump up 4” to the needle valve then travel another 5’ up the plastic tubing to the oil container. C) fire needs 3 things to burn-heat, fuel and oxygen. In that small tube it wouldn’t have much of a source for oxygen to burn, there wouldn’t be much of a heat source to continue the burn and the fire would have to be able to burn in a completely filled tube of oil after the needle valve on the wall. Drop a match in a bucket of oil, it will immediately go out. Oil has a high flash point it doesn’t have fumes like gas, diesel or kerosene to ignite. Not to mention the fan forced air alone going through the outer pipe alone prevents this from happening at all and in itself will put the fire out if you don’t feed it enough oil.

what did you use for the bowl, a dog dish?

In this video it was a dog dish, I have now switched to a 8”x4” stainless steel sauce pan and it makes a better more intense flame.

Shop is 36x42 14ft side walls. Only thing insulated is the roof. I can work in short sleeves in 20-30 degree outside temps
