Join us as we have fun on Whidbey Island in this edition of Washington Wanders!
Whidbey Island is about 30 miles north of Seattle and forms the northern boundary of Puget Sound making it a great day getaway. Included this trip are Deception Pass & Fort Casey where we photograph the most beautiful lighthouse, play at the Fort, then break to enjoy our salads before catching the ferry home. 😊
Deception Pass State Park is outstanding for breath-taking views, old-growth forests and abundant wildlife. This is Washington State’s most popular park. The bridge over the pass is a major landmark, and sits, depending on the tide, about 18 stories above the water. There are beaches, hiking trails, camp sites and also a freshwater lake.
Fort Casey State Park is a camping park with a lighthouse and sweeping views of the Strait of Juan de Fuca. It is the home of a military fort built in the 1890’s to defend Puget Sound from potential attacking ships. It never saw battle. The artillery post features two historic guns on display.
Two lighthouses have been built on Admiralty Head. Only the second remains. It overlooks a succession of bluffs extending northward along the western shore of Whidbey Island to Point Partridge. Its been beautifully restored and it typically open to view but was closed on the day we visited.
