Thanks for covering the Gripen. Being Swedish it is a very frustrating subject. I hope we can donate Gripens one day. Of course Mordor will try everything to stop Gripen since it's the best plane for Ukrainian conditions.

From what I have read/learned you are absolutely right that Gripen is a better suited jet for Ukraine. But the problem is the number of planes you would be able to supply. Ukraine need 100+ jets in the neat future, and a fleet of about 200 in medium term, I dont think this will be possible with Gripens alone.

@@LK-jl3pc It's not possible with only F-16's either. Not enough F-16's have been donated. Both planes are needed, IMO.

It is honestly kind of frustrating to hear your discussion on F16s. I am a Danish citizen. Our jets have been ready to go to Ukraine since new year 2023-24. Despite this we have to hear so many times (weekly?) Zelenskyy and other high ranking officials complain that the planes are delayed, and partners are not delivering on time. Over and over this has been stated. But planes have been ready for 6 months. It is Ukraine who is not ready to receive jets, not the other way around. This goes all the way back to not preparing personel sent for training with adequate language skills - especially technical personel. As a consequence training could not start directly, but time had to spent on English training. This simply should not have been the case if Ukraine wanted this process to go fast and smooth. And how about ground preparations in Ukraine? How many airfields have actually been upgraded? Enough to leave Russians guessing where planes will be kept? How many shelters has been constructed to protect jets from cluster munitions? Or even just tents to hide where planes are actually parked in airfields? Maybe Ukraine is longer in this process than the community knows, but there is a lot of critical voices - also in Ukraine - questioning if Ukraine has prepared properly. What is the point of Denmark and the other partners in the coalition of providing very expensive jets if they run a huge risk of being destroyed on the ground? Sorry about this rant, but for a country of 6mio people like Denmark to donate 19 F16s is a huge undertaking. And to only be accused of this and that all the time is simply to much in the long run. Also Denmark started pilot training in August 2023, so the time calculation given is not correct either. Also not all estimates especially on Ukrainian side said 9 month, but more like 6 month since the pilots sent were very experienced. Standard training period in NATO is 18 months. I am sure they were great pilots, but learning new plane takes some time, and learning completely new munitions and tactics takes even longer. Poland experienced a lot of problems when they started transition to F16. They actually had best results training fresh pilots.

Tack så mycket Danmark för allt ni gör. But this is an important reason why Gripens would have been the better choice. Gripens don't need airfields. Swedish politicians were too cowardly to donate our Gripens early. It's not an ideal situation but we have to work with what we have now.

@@nian60 I agree. I also agree that Sweden was a bit slow in getting started, but by now Swedens support for Ukraine is absolutely stellar! The one problem with Gripen is the number of planes. Ukraine needs 100+ jets and this is simply not possible with the Gripens. How many are there out there, 200 +/-? There is more than 4.000 F16s, and many of the Western countries are in the process of retiring them anyway since we move to F35s in these years. So sourcing F16s in sufficient numbers is just so much easier. Prof. Justin Brok did analysis of why Gripen would be a better suited jet. Apart from the fact you point out it is also about the everyday service being much simpler and the ability to use the "Meteor" missile which is very well suited for the battlefield conditions in Ukraine. Unfortunately Denmark basically has no defense industry. So by now we simply dont have any physical goods left to supply.

@@LK-jl3pc Yes I saw Brock's analysis. Worldwide there are apparently about 250 - 300 Gripen C's. Less than 100 F-16's have been donated so that hasn't been easy either. If more of those F-16's could be donated from somewhere, that would be good.
