Washing machine will not agitate or spin - Home Repair Series

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Motor to Transmission Mount: 30 to 45 minutes.
This washing machine would not agitate or spin. There is a coupling that mates the motor to the transmission that came apart and broke in several pieces. My guess is that the part cost about $20 and takes about 30 minutes to install. The machine made all the sounds but did not work. The water did drain out of the machine even though it wasn't spinning.

I FIXED MY WASHING MACHINE!!!! I. Fixed. It! Im a 25 year old girl and I'm astonished and so excited that I took apart my machine, and FIXED IT!!!! ALL BY MYSELF!!! Thank you for posting this. Every step was perfect! I can't believe that I fixed my broken machine. It literally took 25 minutes. A few (borrowed) tools and a $15 replacement part. I can't imagine how much I would've spent on a repair guy OR even a "new" washer.

Pretty cool! I recall years ago I picked up a washer put out for the trash man that looked good and I noticed the agitator would spin freely. So I thought that's why they threw it out and this has to be an easy fix. this was before the internet so I had a catalog from the local appliance parts shop and they only dealt with contractors. I wore my worn-out one-piece coveralls into the shop so they wouldn't question me. I told them this purchase was for AAA appliances cause theres always a local AAA contractor and that this was going to be a cash ticket sale. the spline was stripped out and it turned out to be an easy fix.

When I bought this washer, they guy I bought it from gave me an extra coupling with it, saying it was going to break one day. I thought he was crazy, but today it happened and I knew exactly what it was, went straight to youtube and found your awesome video and had it fixed in 30 minutes. I recommend everyone to order the next one now for the next time it breaks, that's what I am doing.

Dude, you rock! I've never worked on a washer before and your video showed me how to do it step by step and it worked! My washer is working again and my wife is happy. My washer was doing exactly what you said: not agitating or spinning. I went to my local appliance parts place and bought the coupler. 40 minutes later the washer was working again. Thank you so much for your video and the way you explain everything simply.

The first time I watched this video, I found it was the coupling. Three years later, same problem with no spinning, draining or agitating, but it wasn't the coupling. The motor was fine, the agitator was fine, I found out that a clogged water pump can cause the same problems. Thank you for the video, my 10 year old son and I worked on this together going back and forth with taking it apart and putting it back together.

Somebody said that you could have done the repair in half the time if you had just tipped the machine back and did the work from the bottom. I do NOT agree. Your way gave better access for the tools that most people would use and it took longer because you cared enough to carefully explain it all. I may try the other way, another time, but this way I did not move the base at all. You have done us all a great service. Thank you, Robert.

This was a helpful video. You showed how to get the control panel loosened which another video skipped over. I fixed my washing machine for $20.00 and about 30 minutes to do the repair. Getting the washing machine motor back on took a little more work and juggling than taking it off. Hook the bottom spring clip on before lifting the motor up, then connect it into the rubber bushing and then attach the top clip.

Thank you so much for the easy to follow instructions. I bought my washer several years ago from a guy who refurbished used washers. I had no trouble until last year when it stopped spinning/agitating. The guy who sold me the washer came out and replaced the coupler but a few weeks later it stopped working again. Unfortunately, the guy had to go for surgery and after that, he never returned my calls. I didn't have a lot of money to call a repair company and was sure the problem was something more serious than another broken coupler since it had just been replaced. I figured it would be cheaper to buy another used washer. Just recently, a neighbor put a used washer out for sale and he was going to install it for me but it needed a drain hose. I went online to order the part but it got me thinking again about the washer I already had. Looked up some info on line about how a coupler can break if the washer is overloaded and wondered if that might be the problem as it had broken right after I had washed a bed quilt. I checked out some videos on you tube to see how to go about replacing the coupler and yours was the most easy to follow. I thought I would have a go at it. I had nothing to lose but the $15 it cost for the part. Well, I'm pleased to report that I did the repair today. Took me a while and I sweated a lot, but I now have a functioning washer! The hardest part was getting the cover back on the machine. (Found a video to help me with that too)! Yeah! No more going to the laundromat! I am a 53 year old woman who feels very proud to have accomplished the task of fixing my washer thanks to your wonderful video. Thank you. By the way... does anyone want to buy a used washer with a brand new drain hose!

Hey how you doing Robert, my name is Ed & first of all sir I want to say thank you for you posting your video on how to replace a agitator coupling.. It was a very easy, simple, step by step, do-it-yourself process. Which I really appreciate because I'm not a mechanic, that's not one of the skills that I picked up as a youngster coming up, but I do have confidence now that a repair job can be successful if you follow simple instructions,, regardless if you're a skilled mechanic or not. Hi Robert. Excellent. I have the exact same machine so when the part comes in, it will be done. Two other little things: One is that while I appreciate your mentioning protecting your floor, why not take a scrub brush, detergent, water and rag and clean up that floor under the washer? It only takes a moment more and (at least in our house), it's probably the only time that area gets cleaned. You also never know what treasures you will find - all kinda stuff that falls around there - coins, business cards, buttons, etc. The other thing that happens to our washer is that that little filter for the cold input gets clogged with sediment and the cold water (not the hot which is apparently filtered through the hot water heater) fills very slowly. Takes forever for a cold wash to fill. So every once in awhile I get back there, disconnect that cold hose (turned off at the wall first, of course) and get in there with either an old toothbrush or a q-tip and some alcohol and clean that thing off. Then the cold fills fast until the sediment builds up again. So while I fix this coupler, I will clean that filter too. And check those hoses while I am at it. Thank you very much. You should team up with Mike Rowe to get more young people to learn to repair things. You are such an excellent instructor!

Really informative video. My machine stops after it fills. Does nothing. I'll check if it's this and continue from there if it doesn't work. I'm exactly as you describe yourself. I fix anything I find if it's possible. Washers and dryers sell easy and usually for 5 times what the part costs to repair them. And refrigerators. I can buy them all day long at the scrap yard. 20 bucks for the usual repair makes you 150 bucks. I like your video because it's sounding like you're a regular guy and you get to the point. Your rock man! Your video was a big help. I want to mention that when I disconnected the pump it wanted to stay rugjt in the way of what I was doing, so I disconnected the two hoses connected to the pump, just to get it out of my way. I'm glad that I did that because I found two ballpoint pens inside the hose leading in to the pump. Luckily they hadn't made it into the pump yet. Had I not removed those hoses who knows how long before those pens could have destroyed the pump.

I am having a repairman come look at my washing machine and this was very informative for me! I want to make sure I am not being taken as a fool by the repairman! I feel it's only the bushing that needs to be changed out, let's see what he has to say. Will keep you posted!

He just came and I had him leave! Told me it was the electronic transmission? He said the part would be around $280.00. Told him goodbye! It cost me $60 service fee for a 10 minute transaction. What a rip off!

Was it just the bushing? I wouldn't have paid him a dime. If it was just the bushing and he tried to tell you that it needed a new transmission, that is fraud.

Good video sir. A little safety FYI, the round thing next to the transmission with red wires is a capacitor that stores energy inside. Touching the two prongs with a screw driver at the same time will discharge this energy while making a pop sound and spark. Be careful not to touch the prongs with a metal object unless it is to discharge the energy and that can still hurt you if your not careful. Avoid laying in water even after the unit is unplugged from the wall outlet. Just hoping to keep a good man safe. RWA Old maintenance mechanic

If you took the coupling apart and the feet are still connected, check the metal sleeve to make sure it is not stripped out. If both are fine, you may have a bad timer. Did you check the lid switch?
