Washing machine pump on Maytag Bravos clogged causing smell

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

My Maytag Bravos MCT washer was recently giving starting to smell after sitting for a day without use, it ended up being that it was not draining all the way. This is how to check you pump and look for issues or clogs. Turns out I no longer have to jokingly say, my washer ate my socks!

    Thank you so much for video!! Our washer stated leaving clothes wet and after a week of that it wouldn't drain at all. We followed your instructions. Ours is a slightly different model (the water intake pump was not on bottom) but your tutorial was still spot on. And yes, washers do eat things!! The water outflow was clogged with a pair of underwear!! We had to use a pair of pliers and scissors to remove them. We didn't want to tip our washer totally on it's side and make a huge mess. One of us held the washer at an angle and the other got under it. Two tupperware and a towel was enough to catch what water (and underwear) that came out. It's working like new now. Thanks again!

    Have to say we had the same experience and boy was that nasty. Sure enough a pair of underwear was the culprit! Unbelievable the things you learn and experience as a home owner. That was a new one for me after 20+ years as a homeowner. Thanks for the video!

    Thank you very much. Our washer Maytag Bavos XL would not drain the water. We could hear pump struggling but no water was discharged. We followed your direction and found small cloth that made it to the pump . We cleared the path but the challenge part was put back the clamps. But we did it !!! you are great. Thank you very much for sharing your experience.

    Those clamps were a real pain in the ass for me. I unleashed a torrent of swear words. Nothing really clogged up down there. Put it back together and powered it up with an empty load. Damn thing filled all the way up and wouldn’t drain so I had to bail all the water out again. It’s toast

    You are a washing machine, emergency budget saver! The washing mavhine stopped and flashed the code Ld. Nobody could come out to even do a diagnostic for 5 days. My washing machine had soapy, but dirty water just in the bottom. After 24 hours the entire house smelled rancid. I found this video and will now be canceling the service scheduled for next week. Wishing you many blessing.

    Remarkable a large sock like that could escape the tank. My issue is coins being struck by the impeller. Wish me luck. Thanks! My previous washer was a Maytag, too. Loved that machine. To service, the entire front panel lifted off giving you access to everything inside without moving or tilting the machine. The pump was right at the front of the machine and the pump casing was translucent so without touching it you could see if something was stuck inside.

    Chase G was spot on. Got the "drn" code on my Bravos XL and the drain hose itself was cleared. After emptying water, and flipping dryer on its front (and spilling even more water we could not see), I got the drain hose removed and found a bobby pin with all kinds of lint/fuzz tangled around it completely blocking the drain. After extracting this, I removed the pump impeller and found another bobby pin in there. We have two daughters, so go figure... Re-assembled the unit, slid back into the laundry room, and was able to run the Rinse and Spin cycle with the rinse de-selected and the water turned off. The last of the water drained out. Turned the water back on and ran a load with the dirty clothes from the trip we'd just come back from (yeah, the washer started acting up the night before we left). Cycle ran to completion with no errors and no water to be found. Did another load with all the soaked towels we'd used to clean up the spilled water from working on the unit, and that went just fine. Kudos to Chase for diagnosing this and saving me a couple of hundred $$ and probably having to wait a couple of days to get a service tech out here.

    Cheaper parts plus higher list price equals greater profits. Pumps are centrifugal as the take water and sling it toward the dump hose. If re-using the o-ring, use clear dielectric grease sold in the automotive section at home improvement stores next to epoxy’s, it cost $5-$6 for a tube. This helps the rubber seal and not leak. Just use a tooth pick to smear some on the ring and inside the pumps housing. If the white or grey impeller pulls off, by hand, it may have threads wrapped around the shaft. Use tweezers or tooth pick to remove. If it wraps around the shaft, the weak motor will work harder to pump water while spinning slower. It increase the amperage required to move water during spin out. It may lead the motor to burn up or run hot and quit! Just additional thoughts for a job well done by this guy. When you know how things work, it becomes your job to fix everything. Hey, save yourself $150+ dollars in repair, parts or both. Tech tip: “Use a thin long flat blade screw driver and get between the hose and pump tube, spray WD-40. Work the screwdriver around the fitting. Twist a little and they will come off easier. Same with going on when ready. Other than this, WD-40 evaporates quickly and leaves not protection behind, so after 40+ years fixing cars, I have no use for it other than it can clean certain markings, inks and perhaps certain fresh paints. Have a safe 2022 folks. And remember, when the “Federal Finance Committee” votes to increase the Prime Interest Rate” the cost of credit cards go up in interest and if you home is an “Adjustable Rate Mortgage” called ARMs it will increase. Pay off smallest credit card first, then next highest! Repeat until they are paused. Meantime, look into a refinance of your home mortgage. It does not hurt to call, ask questions. American Home Refi in Aroura, CO. Is a low fee, owner operated small company that is not commission paid! That is a question to ask” I am not in anyway connected and not reimbursed for anything. I simply got a 2.3 APR with $5k cash out to pay off a used Malibu I bought my wife, after a storm branch landed on her 25 year old Corolla. But I searched 250-300 miles into the country of our state. But profit are lower, pay is lower, building lease or rent is lower ended up getting a newer car with $10K less than the big city. It is simple when you think about it! I just got the Ld code one time. But I’ve had the smell issue since I moved into the house around a year ago. Do you think it was standing water or the sock or both causing that smell? Because I know exactly what you meant when you said it. Drives me crazy. We run a clean cycle. It’ll be fine for a like a week then it’s back.

  • @ChaseGatyas

    @ChaseGatyas

    3 жыл бұрын

    I ended up doing that, but for the sake of checking the pump etc you don't have to. There is a protective guard on the inside that you can access if you remove the drum. Its primary goal is to prevent things from getting into the pump. In my case that didn't work so you could remove the drum and check for the sake of preventive maintenance. Level of effort to check the pump and hoses is much lower than removing the inner drum. you can check those first and then if you still have a problem remove the drum and check the inside. Happy to hear this is useful thank you!

    Hi Olivia......I assume the white spirally thing you are talking about is the impeller of the pump. It has four vanes. I don't think you can replace just the impeller, and since your comment was 6 months ago, I assume you already had to buy the complete pump. Those vanes are what moves the water. Whatever was stuck in your probably kept getting hotter and hotter until it melted the vanes.
