Washing machine noise? Squealing, screeching, whining GE washer spin cycle

Expert help needed: Our 2006 GE Spacemaker washer model WSM2700DAWWW is making a horrible noise during the spin cycle sometimes. It sounds like brakes squealing or maybe a loose belt. I don't know.

    Same noise as mine, it was due to a stretched belt, just changed it and the noise is gone. BE sure to clean the pulleys with alcohol before installing the new belt.

    I watched some of these videos on how to change the Drum Bushing (bearing) and decided to turn the machine upside down and oil the bushing with 20W machine oil. Now my wife can't even hear it change cycles. It was easy and did not cost me anything but a bit of oil. I really don't understand why they don't oil them when they put in the new bushing. Update: That lasted about a month and then I got a german made spray in lubricant for bushings and its been going ever since! About three months ago I did have to take the whol machine apart as the bearing in the gear box was making an airplane noise. Make sure if you change this bearing you get a high quality one as the $10 one from NAPA only lasted 3 months.

    I had this worse on a Maytag Legacy top loader. The squealing was continuous as soon as you started the cycle. Check the belt tension which seemed fine. The break wheel had some build-up and discoloration. You'll probably notice the brake against the belt. I sprayed brake, belt and pulley with automotive brake cleaner which if you haven't used before evaporates almost instantly (need ventilation). Wiped everything best possible with cloth to remove any buildup. Problem solved. Cost $1.

    So I'm sitting on the toilet at 2 am. Just minding my own business, when suddenly and very distinctly I here women screaming in agony. I go completely still, as that sound appeared to have been close to the bathroom. I can't move, afraid that what made that noise would hear me. I make my way to the garage, as I remember I had a baseball bat in there. I go over the garage several times, but am unable to find it, settling on an old, rusted nine iron. I proceed to stalk the house, looking to bash whatever made that noise to pieces so that I can get a good nights rest. Other than beating up an old coat out of surprise, I couldn't find the source of the scream. I return to my room, reasoning that it had to be something else that made the scream. "Maybe there's a logical explanation," I think to myself remembering that the house had pipe problems. I also remembered my old friend, whose cat's scream was a remarkable match to that of a woman. The neighborhood did have a lot of stray cats. Maybe a cat outside made the noise and it echoed into the house. I search on the internet, trying to find what sort of animal could have made that noise, with no luck. Then, I remembered I put a load in the washing machine before I went to bed, so that it would be done in the morning and I could dry them before work. The washer and dryer are right next to the bathroom anyway. I check the washing machine, and sure enough it finished washing not too long ago. I tell myself that there's no way in hell a washing machine could make such a specific noise, but at this point I'm desperate. I google "screaming washing machine", and find this video. It's the same noise. IT'S THE SAME GODDAMN NOISE. My washing machine scared me fully awake at 2:00. The moral of the story is don't wash your clothes at night.

    Mine is doing the same thing, but it only happens on the spin cycle only. That leaves me to believe that the part that is needed or parts are related to the spin cycle. To me that eliminates the motor and transmission. I'm leaning towards the spin bearing. I am going to replace the spin bearing, belt, pulley, tub seal and spin washer and I'll update you all on whether this solves the problem. Stay tuned.

    Mine made a similar squeal which was resolved when I replaced the transmission. I didn't open up the old transmission, but while it normally should spin when driven in one direction, and agitate when driven in the other direction, my transmission was grinding as if it were trying to agitate and spin at the same time.

  • @andros2112
    @andros211210 жыл бұрын

    The bearing at the bottom of the transmission is going bad. It's a sealed bearing, and as best as I can tell - not independently replaceable - you're supposed to replace the ENTIRE FREAKIN TRANSMISSION!!! Sometimes mine would lock up in the spin mode, and the motor would continue to spin, and literally melt a spot on the belt - because it wasn't moving. I noticed a crack in the plastic seal on the top side of the bearing, and managed to squirt nearly an ounce of SAE 30 motor oil into it with a syringe. That was a couple of months ago and so far - no further problems! Sure wish i could get a replacement bearing...

    I have a pair of Extra Heavy Duty GE washer and dryer set that I bought in the mid 80s. I have kept them working all this time by getting parts from the appliance parts stores in the first 10 years or so, now the web. Can you say "DISCONTINUED"? The stockholders weren't getting fat envelopes from these machines. I love technology, but who says one needs the equivalent of a 5th generation Pentium processor with a virtual hard drive and memory plus a cute LED display to wash a load of clothes? Further, who decided major appliances should become obsolete in 7 years or so, becoming scrap yard filler?

    we had a repair guy show up and told us it needs a new motor/inverter a new shaft and mod shifter to the tune of 400.00. For that price we can replace it. Why don't they build things to last or make parts affordable? It is a shame to send it to the landfill when it could be fixed. But for a few bucks more we can have a new appliance.

    the drain pump has something jamming inside in the spinning cycle --------------------------- to get to the pump remove the front panel - there will be 2 or 3 screws on the bottom remove them then push down the front panel to release side from the groves that they are in just check the drain pump they designed it with 2 flip latches but first, take it off the houses -there will be 2 clamps to push back with a pair of pliers - then once done with that flip the 2 latches and remove the pump - you will find something is in there could be a small pin or little nail extra something metallic or other objects -which is rubbing the pump ---- when done make sure you aline the shaft cut with part then clamp the latches put the hose clamps back using pliers --------- flip the latches back and you are all set

    Anybody there? Thanks for the video. Perfect rendition of my GE Washer gtw485asj1ws a 4.5 cu ft (HE) that just started screaming too.... but I knew it wasn't the old lady next door! So I'm at the point to give repair guy probably $400 or go to Lowes (free delivery) and get new one for $600+. But I think looking for an old fashioned one, like we had 30-40 years ago for $50 is smart move. Then my boys can take the screamer apart on the back porch for something to do during our Stay At Home Order due to COVID19 bs.. A career in Appliance Repair might be an option...Ya know and other thing..who manufactures these apparatuses we use daily around the house...I mean do the people/CEOs who sit around the 'round table' even ever used a vacuum cleaner or washer? $1000 vacuum cleaner and the piece that makes it all go is plastic! ..or like making you totally deconstruct your washer to get to the bearing...nuff said. Gotta go to the creek to washy clothesy ..

    As a person who does his own cleaning, I am convinced that the moron engineers who design most appliances never use them. Vacuum cleaners that weigh 7 or 8 lbs. with bag connections that clog quickly or break apart because of bad materials specifications, toasters, blenders, or countertop appliances with no provision for cord storage when not in use, etc. If you picked up on the idea that I also cook, that's correct.

    I have this exact same model. Mine is at least seven years old (I live in an apartment, and it came with the apartment). Mine has not ever made this sound. I do have a question for you, though -- do you find that sometimes sheets and long-sleeved shirts get tangled and twisted up during the wash cycle? Also, does your wash tub rotate slowly during the wash and rinse cycles? I think it's this rotation that causes the sheets to become tangled up and twisted.

    My Maytag toploader is doing the same thing. Loud squealing until the spin cycle picks up speed, then it stops. I think it's the belt ($16 replacement), but I'm worried it's the bearing (a lot more expensive and a lot more complicated to fix). Did you ever find out the problem? Did you fix it yourself or call a pro?

    Hey -- honestly, I pulled and spun, poked and prodded, cleaned a bit, but did not change a thing -- the noise got louder and louder, and then it started to fade, and hasn't really come back recently. I can take no credit for fixing it. The screechy dryer on top (not part of this vid), on the other hand, needed complete disassembly to put some high-heat lube on the bearing.
