U really have to use that gel very sparingly. I use the hair milk mixed with little oil & use the gel very sparingly. Flaking is minimal. My hair has never been white & ashey. First time I did use too much gel & was very flakey.

And on top of that Shea Moisture is NOT CHEAP!

Same here. I also make sure I buy from Target so I can return it or trade it. Target is perfect for people learning to care for their hair because they allow 30 day return even if the product is used or opened even damaged.

The mask from this line is good but the gel is HORRID-ABLE!! 🙅🏽‍♀️ Haven’t bought a product from Shea ashy since 😂

SIIIIISSSS!!! THANK YOU! I had the same exact problem. I twisted my hair in the same manner and STEPPED OUT THE HOUSE!! My hair wasn't dry when I left, but when I got home I was so embarrassed bc My entire was greyish/white. It was horrible. Seeing that eco styler was cancelled I was looking for a gel in its place and this let me down. Thank you for being honest and letting people know this product is not acceptable. I love shea moisture, but this was a waste of my money.

OMG I thought I was crazy when I used the twisting custard paired with the cantu twisting cream, but now I realize it was the custard that flaked my hair like crazy. It really did make my hair look like a winter wonderland!! It was awful. This definitely confirms it.

OMG, this line worked like MAGIC on my hair! No flaking and SUPER moisturizing and defined! Me and my high porosity, 4B hair loved it but Im so sorry that this happened to you, sis. Also, my twisting custard smelled like sweet tarts so I'm not sure why there was a difference lol; Never tried the gel maybe it will work without it the next time.

I'm so glad I didn't purchase this line. I was going to until I saw your video and others complaining about the same issue. Thank you for the video.

I love this line....shampoo, conditioner, masque and leave-in. However I haven't tried the twisting butter or the gel from this line.

Well I sure appreciate you sharing this experience girl. The Masque used to be a staple for me and sadly I was hesitant on getting another one because of their ingredients changing in other products so I just didn’t trust them. I noticed with that red palm oil butter I had small white balls in my hair. Not sure what’s up with that either.

Nice review! I really love the conditioner and masque from this line. I was too happy when I found the big 18 oz bottle of the conditioner at target lol! I co-wash every night with the coconut and hibiscus co-wash except wash day and I want to try the leave in milk from this line as my quick leave in moisturizer. I usually use the coconut and hibiscus curl enhancing smoothie but I'm not trying to use that up too quickly lol.

This is my go to products I used weekly. The custard give you enough hold without the gel. After you apply the leave-in, you either apply the gel or the custard. If your going a softer but a good hold, the custard is the best way to go. I love the gel but the custard is what I used weekly.

I have only tried the DC. It just sat on my hair. I like the JBCO mask and the 10 in one.

Mitchka Leon the twisting custard won't flake, but it will leave your hair very dull and coated looking.

I would use the custard or the gel not both together.

I haven't tried it yet but I watched a few reviews when this product first came out. They recommend to only use a little bit of the gel because of the max hold and the flaking.

a lot of lines you can't mix the cream with their gels so that might have been the problem like you said.

I loved the masque from this line the conditioner was ok. I wonder how the gel would work with a liquid leave in

The only thing I like from this line is the Masque, it makes my hair super soft😍

I love the Shampoo & deep conditioner. I’ve tried the Coconut Hibiscus Max Hold gel which is very similar in ingredients to the Max Hold Gel from this line…absolute trash! People act like the gel is good but they used it wrong, no Boo..it just sucks. Glad you gave an honest review

I have the May curlbox, I used the twisting butter with the leave-in lotion, that worked great together. When I used the gel I used kinky kurly's knot today as my leave in and it didnt flake. To me it never makes since to use a lotion like leave in with a gel. I live in Orlando so I get it when it comes to the weather.

I just bought the custard (didn't know they made this. I've been under a rock) and have been using the conditioner... I'm a little nervous now, but I plan to use it with a different gel or just by itself. I use Eco styler flax for my son and ear wetline for me.

The max hold gel made my hair flake EXACTLY like yours! I still use the shampoo, hair mask, and leave-in from the line. Loooovvvveeee those products, but that max hold gel...... yeah issa no for me! Had me out here looking dusty lmao

Hi Lexi, The deep condition & shampoo are my favorite. The leave in was a little to thick for me. I also had to fight for it to come out. I'll be waiting for you to reuse the line bc my hair flake soooooo BAD also. YES you were real disrespectful to your strands to go out like that. lol

That is my favorite line! I use the shampoo and deep conditioner only.

I have the coconut hibiscus masque and gel. It does flake if you use it the way you use other gels. The next time I used it I read the directions and it said just scrunch it in on top of the smoothie. That worked perfectly and my wash n go curls was just as poppin’. It says max hold gel and they didn’t lie

It was the gel that caused the flakes. I used it with the leave in and it was horrible. I returned it. I like the shampoo and the deep conditioner

Am I the only one who hated the mask? It didn’t moisturize my hair like everyone hypes it up to.

It works wonders for my hair so it could be that your hair just doesn’t like it. My hair doesn’t like Aragon oil at all and it took me a minute to figure that out. You should try some samples of the other lines just to see which one is for you!

Would you recommend this deep conditioner for moisture or protein treatment? Or if you know any deep conditioners for moisture for low porosity 4c hair?

I liked everything but that leave-in milk because it was so hard to squeeze out and that horrible gel. How in the woooorld does a gel flake that badly within its own line...how Sway?!

Lord that is the ashiest braid out I’ve ever seen. So sorry. I did a review for the Coconut and Hibiscus Max Hold Gel... it was also horrible. Crusty, flaky mess.

Love the deep conditioner! But can’t find the leave in or cream.

the only thing i tried from that line is the deep conditioner which i do really like. i have to get the shampoo and i was thinking about trying the gel but i dont know now since you really dont know what gave you the flakes.

I tried it but it wasn’t that moisturizing to me. I’ve given up on Shea Moisture.

How long do you keep the conditioner in your hair?

The hair masque doesnt work for my 4c as a good deep conditioner... But as a LEAVE IN, like twist at night no rinse out, its WONDERFUL. i thought i was gonna be dissapointed altogether but its a great leave in just use a little bit

The gel from this line and Red palm flaked up on me also. I had great curl definition though. I hate when that happens!

I did not like the shampoo, it was very stripping to my hair. It went into my hair great but afterwards.. it was horrible! I loveeeeeedddddd the deep conditioner! I don’t condition my hair, I usually go straight to deep conditioning. The twisting custard was sooo drying to my hair ugh.. I wish I had gotten 3 masks

I tried the hold gel and did not like it. I don’t know whether I used too much or what but my hair was sticky. Liked the style milk although it was pretty thick. I have heard good reviews for the custard. I did not try it myself.

I love the shampoo and DC from this line. I add extra olive oil to the DC for even more moisture.

I love this range but have never used the gel I use the twisting custard and seal with castor oil I think the gel is wat caused the flakes, whenever I seal with gel it creates flakes

Fragrance is very high up in the ingredients list of the conditioner. And yea leave ins should be bigger. Like their JBCO line

What were you wearing on your lips in this video

I used the leave-in and custard together and the same thing happened to me! I had to wash my hair again. Then when I tried the custard with a different leave-in I got the same results. Like you said the shampoo and DC are great but the leave-in and custard are a no. Edit: My hair is also low porosity which may have affected results.

I think I’m going to try these products but I don’t think that I would use the gel. I don’t really use gels anyway.

I have the shampoo, conditioner and deep conditioner. I will not get the gel. I have heard bad things about it. The rest of the line is wonderful. The regular conditioner smells like 🍯 I love the products I have. Thank you for your review.

I hate the entire line 💅🏾. The mask just sat on top of my hair and my daughters’ hair. We all have different porosities/densities/textures but it did JACK stank for our hair. The shampoo claims it’s color safe but my I watched my color run right down the drain. There’s only 2 product lines from Shea “aLl iNcLuSiVe” Moisture that work for us and that’s the JBCO and high porosity lines. I’m sorry you had that experience. I wanted to cry for you when I saw the flakes. I know that struggle after all the hard work you put in on wash day. ☹️ Also; We got flakes too using the styling products from the Red Palm Oil line. Just used them this weekend and had to re-wash our hair the next day 🤦🏾‍♀️

That’s crazy. My hair prefers Shea Moisture products or As I Am compared to other company brands which is weird. My hair reacts badly to their coconut and hibiscus smoothie which I think is their worst product.

That mask was same for me... Tried it a few times, just pure dryness.

I’ve been trying the hair masque and it’s been making my head feel hot almost like you get a relaxer and the heat when it starts getting to your scalp. I’m u sure if I’m applying it wrong or just allergic :( but it’s soft on my hair and make it curl and idk what to do

Same thing happened when I tried the gel from the jamaican black castor oil line for a wash and go...it was soooooo cute...and then it dried...and they recommend pairing it with the smoothie which is what I did...I think I used too much product so I will try it again😩 It did work well for my old faithful twist out...wash and go was a fail

I had a bad allergic reaction to it. The shampoo and conditioner is the best I've ever used BUT, I got that tingly itchiness all over my body because I washed my hair in the shower. I recognized it as a BAD allergic reaction. I had to take Benadryl every night for 3 nights (usually after a bad reaction, and I take a warm or hot shower, I'll start itching again and can't go to sleep because it's so bad so gotta take Benadryl). I was SO SAD about this because it worked crazy well and was amazing! BUT the allergic reaction was bad, so I couldn't use it again 😔

The shampoo is amazing didn’t strip my hair even re using it the second time feels more like a conditioner... the conditioner is okay too. Never tried the leave in milk youre video is the first time for me seeing it... the custard SCARED ME AT FIRST... after i shampooed / conditioned it I used the custard as a leave in while finishing the moisturizing process with the wild growth oil before detangling so I can do my two strand twist... first twist I saw flakes 😰 I know it’s not from the oil so I dreaded the custard until my hair got drier the flakes disappeared and my hair was shiny normal... I probably thinks it takes more time for the custard to fully get absorbed into the hair and the gel obviously holds everything in place duh that’s why we use it lol. I hate gels / stopped using them!!! I have the curling gel soufflé from their coconut hibiscus line... no it doesn’t flake but it makes my hair feel like I’ve put grease in it so I stopped using it basically a full jar... I think it’s a combo of the custard / gel that did that to you... since it takes a minute for the custard to absorb the flakes from the product mixed with the gel... sorry to hear this happened to you but it’s part of the hair journey!!!! Now I know not to buy the gel 😂😂 thank you for your review ❤️

Man that sucks lol. My favorite gel from shea moisture is the cocnut and hibiscus gel. THE only thing is it leaves my hair feeling sticky but my curls pop and my hair stays moist for over a week. Could you do a review of the high porosity gel? I've used it 2 times and noticed gel like flakes coming out of my hair and don't quite know why lol.

Surprisingly! I've had that happen with quite a few products! My hair did the same thing with Mane Choice, Carols daughter Pracaxi, and Shea Moisture! I don't know what I did wrong but my hair looked like I was homeless!!!!

I used the Manuka Honey Hydrate & Design Max Hold in a two strand twist. I washed used a leave in and twisted. My twist were so hard and it seemed like I used glue. I untwisted my hair and it was hard and crunchy. I don't think I used that much. It was HORRIBLE so I washed my hair and tried it as w wash and go, my hair dried and it was so Dry. This product does not work for me. My hair is 4 a. Thank goodness tomorrow is a holiday it will give me time to fix it. When they come out with a new line, the should have sample sizes, I just paid almost 11 for something I can't use.

I have dense low porosity hair. SM Manuka Honey Masque is my holy grail DC. I always steam and always DC and this always makes my hair SAWFT...salon quality moisture. Your headline was “click-bait” cause I thought you were going to say it was bad. As far as gels, I only use DevaCurl Ultra Defining gel by the Mega Size - never flakes.

This is my fav line from shea moisture. I have only purchased the shampoo, deep cond & leave-in. Personally I wouldn't purchased any of their gels because they never work when I tried them from other lines. I definitely would never used a custard & gel together from any product - its just too much product

It was definitely the gel that flaked your hair. I used to same line but I only use the shampoo, conditioner, masque, and the gel. Since that line is especially thick, you don’t need to add the gel with the custard. I did the custard with my twist out with a little castor oil and my twists were POPPIN!! I think the gel is too much.

It's funny that I find this video because I tried the masque sample before, and it was pretty good for my hair. I'm a 4c chick also, so it's good to see other 4c hair youtubers try products that I want to try🙌🏾 P.s do you have a favorite moisturizing masque/deep conditioner without protein?

Lexi girllll, I have the curl box, I loved the shampoo, conditioner and I have the mask and like it as well, but the the gel and the twist custard was a complete fail😬!!! I felt something wasn’t wright with the custard, the gel, turned my hair gray like yours. I didn’t try the milk, but the custard and the gel didn’t mix. I am interested in seeing you try a different mix with these products.
