Was Star Wars: The Force Unleashed As Good As I Remember?

Ойындар

When I think of some of my most nostalgic memories in gaming, many centre around one IP. Star Wars. Whether it be Battlefront, Lego games, Jedi Academy, Knights of the Old Republic even some of the move tie in games like Revenge of the Sith. But out of all of the Star Wars games that I’ve played, no game quite has a grip on my nostalgia like Star Wars: The Force Unleashed. I just hadn’t played anything in the Star Wars universe that let the player feel such a strong sense of power. But after nearly 14 years and games like Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order does The Force Unleashed still hold up today and more importantly, is it as good as I remembered? Let's find out!

This game was great back in the day. The first thing I did as Darth Vader was throw an endless amount of wookies off the side of a cliff while laughing hysterically about it. Jedi Fallen Order might be a better game, but you can't throw wookies off the side of a cliff in hilarious fashion, so Force Unleashed gets the nod in that category at least.

The force unleashed physics were just amazing and way ahead of its time. The only other game that compares is gta 4. I don't really agree that Jedi Fallen Order is a better game because they are just hard to compare to each other. One game is a linear action hack n slash and the other is a semi open metroidvania/ souls like with a very different approach to combat and a heavy focus on puzzles and exploration.

@@xgrillsenx exactly, fallen order is practically a souls/sekiro inspired action adventure while force unleashed is just a power trip that isn’t meant to be taken incredibly seriously imo. while it would have been fun, any crazy force powers in fallen order would definitely clash with the more methodical combat and take away the melee focus. force unleashed just wants to make you feel like a god hence the name, both serve their purpose greatly and shouldn’t be compared that much. pretty sure gta iv uses the same engine as the force unleashed too

I just think the Wii/PS2 version is wanxiousay superior than the Steam/Xbox/PS3 version that everybody plays today. I fell in love with TFU in my childhood, but was only able to play the PS2 version of the game. Almost a decade later I finally got a PC good enough for games and imediatelly bought the Ultimate Sith Edition on Steam, anxious to see how the "superior" version of the game that I was kept from looked like. My disapointment was imediate when I saw myself faced with a very clunky gameplay that gives you way less control than It actually wants you to think. The PS2 version of the game is way closer to the gameplay of The Force Unleashed 2, both camera and overall movement gives you way more to work with, and despite the graphical limitations of the console the lightsaber combat still looked better. Playing It on PSX2 through emulation is still the legitimate way to experience the game.

Juno Eclipse is a much more fleshed out and interesting character in the TFU novel, which I reccomend. They explore the bombing of Callus and the guilt she holds as an imperial officer. My favorite Juno moment in the first book is when both she and Starkiller are looking at something on their ships console, and Starkiller leans in really close next to her head and she basically has a thought like "Oh no he's hot!" Made me laugh so hard, she was such a great character.

While I agree that Jedi: Fallen Order did indeed take what was great about these games and improve upon them, it did unfortunately pass on some of the things that made The Force Unleashed experience so great. For me, the destructible environments were a big part of the fun, and Fallen Order's newer game engine could have taken the opportunity to really capitalize on, and polish up, that whole physics system. Also, flinging enemies around and general manipulation of NPCs seemed more free in The Force Unleashed than it did in Fallen Order. I hope the sequel takes these things into account.

Fallen order is more comparable to the Jedi academy games then the force unleashed. Force unleashed is about the force. Fallen order is about the lightsaber combat. What I think would really want is a new force unleashed. Even if they do add some force unleashed style moves in Jedi survivor it'll still be wayyyy less powerful then Starkiller

Well, in Jedi Survivor you have way more TFU moments, like that CIS Droid Ship in Jedha that Kal and Merrin face together. I belive the third game will get feats even more impressive than that, which I fully support. Who knows, we may finally get a capital ship being wanked off the skyes of Tanalorr for the final act.

I remember a friend brought over Battlefront II to my house and after he left I just had to know more so I asked my dad. He showed me all the movies up to that point in release order. Not long after that this game came out and The Clone Wars tv show came out. I have been obsessed with Star Wars ever since.

I still love this game and remember it fondly. I found this game ( PS2 version) at my local library back when they allowed us to borrow video games before they got rid of it. It was a cloudy Saturday morning too, I saw it and borrowed it immediately. Soon as I got home I went to my room and played it all day. I was so hooked with the story playing as Starkiller feeling so powerful it was amazing. I ended up reaching my favorite level the Death Star level before calling it a day and finished the game the following morning. Lol I've never done that with any other game I borrow or played and just played it so much I reach the final level before calling it a day Last year I felt nostalgic about The Force Unleashed I looked it up and watched the playthrough much to my surprise it was the PS3 version that didn't include some stuff from the PS2 but other than it was mostly the same and still good. I've never played Force Unleashed 2 but watched the entire gameplay and to me, it was boring and didn't feel the same as the original. What a shame this isn't canon anymore. Starkiller is the man

New subscriber here. I love the game and I love the video. Personally for me the game still holds up to this day because the gameplay is so simple and fun. One thing I especially love about it is the fast and arcade-y movement of Starkiller. Playing him feels so quick if you use the sprint. The rag doll enemies are also a great choice because you feel so powerful throwing them around as you like. Even though many don't like it, I personally also loved the quick time finishes for the boss fights. It always felt more rewarding to beat a boss with a special cutscene than in games where they simply disappear. What's also interesting is the fact that the PSP version (that I played when I was young) was basically a different game with another level design and animations/graphics due to the lack of hardware. They did a great job however with the implementation of a few side modes to compensate for the slimmed down campaign. The horde mode, the lightsaber duels and the movie fights were great fun once I grew tired of playing the story again and again. Sad how empty and heartless the second game feels in comparison even if the combat got improved. I look forward to your video about that game tho.

I've never seen any of your videos before but that was actually a pretty fun look back at a game that I've never played. I remember people going wild over the star destroyer part and I might have remembered this wrong but did it get patched so it was easier? Still, I think it looks like a pretty damn fun game so I think I'll need to check it out - I kinda miss this era of LucasArts where it was really just anything goes as long as George says he likes it! One bit of feedback I do want to give is just that I don't really understand the conclusion about how the game has aged! It looks like you enjoyed the game quite a bit on replay and the story seemed pretty engaging so I'm not really sure what element of it has become outdated. Your main issues look like issues which were raised at the time (weird story beats, somewhat button mashy combat, short) and I think the parts that make it great (Jedi power fantasy, the star wars feel, fun factor) are all basically just as valid in 2022. It still looks extremely playable and fun to me so I wouldn't be afraid to just come out and say - yeah Force Unleased is still absolutely great haha Definitely going to check out some more of your stuff to keep me company through some boring work days! Thanks for the video!

The Force Unleashed is still very much playable and enjoyable to play to this day where I believe the game has aged is particularly in its combat or at least feels more noticeably out dated compared to offerings I've experienced since then. With that being said it's still a great time to play and if you were to ask me about the game not in the context of a KZread video where I may be a bit more critical I'd simply say I had fun. One thing that always stuck with me with this game was what how innovative it was with how people used the force. Being able to make force shock waves, ignite objects with force lightning, imbue force lighting into your lightsaber, turn invisible, create lighting shields....so many abilities that I believe showed the untapped potential of power in star wars that it seems like the modern era is really afraid to tackle or get into.

The graphics aged as gracefully as a ps3 title can in today's age, atmosphere, story, settings, characters, Dialog, fun... It had it all. Comparing it to modern SW games, they are nice and all but the soul, the real soul of star wars, the love for the franchise in every single instance, that's what newer games can't capture for some reason.

The thing is I have a special connection with The Force Unleashed. This game is an old childhood memory of mine, from playing it on the Wii when I was about 9 years old and then getting the HD version some time later. I've come to realize that Starkiller is one of my all-time favorite Star Wars characters because of the journey he takes and his complicated character development. One thing I will say is that Starkiller is more interesting than Cal Kestis. With that, The Force Unleashed is possibly my most favorite Star Wars game of all time, on par with Lego Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga. While I will understand why KOTOR is considered the best by the time I finally play that, The Force Unleashed is mostly going to top it when it comes to persona preference.

I like how Starkiller is meta-fictionally and figuratively what Luke Skywalker 'could' have become had he kept the name 'Starkiller' and had he been brought up under Vader. It's the what-if story of what would have happened had Luke been mercilessly bullied by his Vader since birth. It's Joseph Campbell's monomyth subverted. He also shares emotional similarities to Kylo Ren - both prone to outbursts - but Starkiller's redemption was executed way better, and was much more satisfying. The irony of Vader and the Emperor also inadvertently creating the Rebel Alliance is also not lost on me.

With how popular this game was and it’s sequel, it’s time we get a video game where you play as Darth Vader. I don’t think we’ll ever get a movie or D+ show so a game would be perfect. Replaying this game recently, the stiff controls and ridiculous amount of stuns and staggers from enemies really killed it for me. Sometimes you feel like a god of the force, other times you struggle just to jump on a platform without instantly sliding off to your death. When i was younger i could overlook this sluggishness, but having played so many tighter and more responsive action games since then, it's hard to get past the issues in this game. It's a shame! This game has some of the best physics-based interactions i've ever seen; the world bends, flexes, shatters, and collapses under your powers in a really enjoyable way, and throwing stuff with the force is just so goddamn fun.
