Sean got cut twice and the leg kicks got through enough to win him the fight. One his body kicks was worth at least 10 jabs or more

I think the optics of Seans strategy doesnt benefit him in close fights. Especially in rounds 2 3 4 he was mostly walking backwards and throwing jabs, compared to DDP who pressured, comitted more to his shots, head kicks, body kicks and takedowns that matter in the close rounds. Good fight by both!

There's footwork, and then there's aggression. This is a 25 minute fight and Sean was the aggressor for maybe 2 minutes of the whole fight. There is an inherent risk to being the aggressor, as you're walking into the punches of your opponent, so damage is slightly unemphasized on the aggressor IF (and a big IF) the aggressor has been one person for the overwhelming majority of the fight.@@uhok6712

It’s called ring generalship Sean kept him on the end of the jab while ddp was throwing wild combos mostly hitting air/ hands. It’s called stick and move

I think most casuals underestimated DDP. Those who saw him knock out Derek Brunson and then Robert Whittaker in the same year knew it was on the cards. Did you not even look at the odds?

I had Strickland winning 1,2 and 5. I was always taught you gotta take it from the champ and DDP did not do that. Judges gave it to him. Izzy vs DDP is a huge money fight with amazing story lines.

Dude you’re the best breakdown show I’ve seen, please don’t stop doing these, really enjoy listening to your breakdowns man.

After watching it back a few times, I still gave Sean, 1,2,3 and 5...Dricus lives and trains at 5,000 feet elevation, so I never believed the media narratives, about gassing out..Sean lost the optics, but certainly won the fight, which Dricus's swollen face testifies to..It's a shame..And as a 30 year boxer, I can assure you that Sean's world class jab is not a light strike, which again, Dricus's swollen face, proves beyond any reasonable doubt..We had the same snacking strategy..LOL..

Frfr. Rounds 2 and 3 were close, but Sean outdamaged him. Dricus threw shots that looked hard but either didn't land or that Sean gave no reaction too, but Dricus kept reacting to Sean's jab and his face was swelling up while Sean looked undamaged until the 4th. Close Fight, but I still feel it was pretty clearly Sean. No way you give Dricus both of the swing rounds. And usually close rounds go to the Champ, but even if Sean wasn't the Champ I still think he edges those rounds off of damage and the volume was close

Agreed. Watched it back, and I see a whole lot of love from the commentators, and the tweets they posted as the fight was happening praising DDP. But now that I’ve watched it twice, Sean won that fight. The proof is in the graphs they kept posting. Strickland seems to have won at least 4 rounds.

The way I see it is 3 is more of a toss up, but I gave Sean round 2 because the volume of strikes was close and it was the only round Dricus outstruck Sean, but Dricus didn't land shots that Sean reacted to. Sean hit him with shots that Stung and Dricus reacted hard to and swoll up DDPs face bad and Sean had no visual damage. I gave it to Sean 1 2 5 and 3 has an argument

was a good close fight. I would honestly like to see a rematch... Either that, or if Izzy beats Dricus, run back Sean vs Izzy. I do believe that they will not do Izzy and Dricus at 300, because Dana said he wants Dricus bringing UFC to Africa and prob doesnt want to risk him losing the belt before then... Plus Izzy is/was hurt, last I heard... So if anything, let them fight at South Africa, and Sean can sit back and get better until that fight is concluded and he can take on the winner.

Sidenote: Sean's defense is so uniquely effective. He's able to stifle a lot of striking. He uses effective arm blocks & people don't land flush shots. Seems like if someone is willing to go after him, throwing combos, shifting angles & levels. That's how they could beat him. He just needs to add an extra layer to his fight IQ & dynamic range to his offensive tactics. That would really help Sean overcome the scoring issues. *BTW: Timbo could u ask Sug if he'd be willing to do his hair the way he had it for the fight against Kris Mutino or the fight where he KO'd that dude on the ground into the shadow realm (i forgot that opponents name but it would be dope to see him use those different hair styles braid styles again)

@@toxic4666 lmao, this isn't boxing. He got outstruck by 2 and 4 punches in 2 of those 4 rounds when he got takedowns as well. It's called MMA for a reason, its not a jab competition. The likes of the best fighters of all time had ddp winning, mighty mouse, volk and henry cejudo to name a few. You are the definition of a casual in this sport, it was close and could've gone either way.

I don’t have any hate against Dricus he did better than I thought. However, Sean definitely won. He outstruck Dricus by far and Dricus cut him because the place he got hit has soft skin (above the eye) and DDP takedown didn’t do anything. Unfortunate ruling

Its MMA, not walk-walk jab. DDP did the most in the fight - striking, leg/body/head kicks and take downs all while dictating the pace of the fight. Sean had success with his jab, but it's literally all he did. If you want a one dimensional champion, then so be it. DDP makes every fight exciting.

Judges don’t score for variety. MMA means using whatever technique(s) are most effective, when they’re effective. If Sean was more effective with his jab, he would have won with his jab. You certainly can’t argue Izzy won their last fight just because he used a used a wider variety of strikes.

But if you're consistently changing champs every 3 months it's hard to develop a following or consistency - both of which are huge contributors to viewer draws (better for fighters and UFC). Let's not focus on the one who gamed it (adesanya) but look to the others that it help developed (all the close run ins with Jones, Khabib, Mcgregor, etc.) If i'm the CEO of UFC or Disney or w/e I don't want Strickland to win - especially given the way he speaks his mind amidst the current political/public climate -- this is another story on its own....

A great battle of will they both egerly signed up for, i had Sean in 1,2 and 5 but it was too close. They need to run it back

main event lived up to the hype whenever it doesn't, it just stinks up the whole card. i had ddp winning 3,4 and i believe the takedowns made barely ddp won giving him the 2nd round

Lol the reason why Strickland's fan boys are screaming robbery is because they think that "damage" means bruises and cuts lol no when judges score a fight, actually, they should NOT let aesthetics like bruises and cuts affect scoring. Dricus landed way more power calf, body, head kicks, body shots, rear power and left hook punches while Sean was landing a lot of arm jabs and flickering teeps. Bruises and cuts do not = damage. You can easily knockout an oppement cold without leaving even one mark on the opponent. Damage = solid shots landed and clean solid power shots = more damage (NOT whether their eye gets bruised up lol)

Even tho Khamzat is new to middle weight, and beat usman who is normally welter, I would love to see Khamzat fight ddp for the title

Sean outboxed him. It felt like watching a pro boxing match. He got the first and Sean got right back up during the 2nd round and won that round. I thought the judges look for damage?! DDP's face was destroyed! Izzy isn't coming back so they need to run it back again. Now Sean knows he can stuff his takedowns and continue the exceptional stand-up. And Sean is the star of the UFC now. (Both of them) lol

For Everyone saying it was a robbery: The deciding round was round 3. Jon anik says at the beginning of round 4 that Sean's coach told him in the break: "I didn't like that round your gonna need a big round 4 and 5" So coach Eric knew round 3 might have gone to DDP

Judges in the Curtis fight must have been watching 2 different fights. 2 judges gave Curtis all 3 rounds and 1 judge gave Marc Andre 2 of 3 rounds. How is that possible. Make it make sense with these judges.

I think it came down to the 5th round could have been scored either way

Thank you bro. Strickland was only using a jab and a teep which was not enough to out damage the bodykick, overhand, and strait of ddp in round 2 3 and 4. Plus DDP got a takedown in round 2 and he was out pressuring Strickland. People think Strickland won because of landing 20 jabs a round is crazy to me

I agree that putting someone on the back foot is a big component. But I don't think someone taking more damage even though he's the one moving forward equates as being "in control". And those takedowns resulted in no damage too

I think Sean won up 40+ strikes and dricus kicks all checked dricus 19 seconds takedown at a time did nothing Sean only had a headbutt cut and Dricus got beat to shit

In a way I feel like the title should only change by KO, submission, or ref stoppage. Titles being left up to refs sucks. If the fight ends and its up to the refs, the refs can pick the winner but the title doesn't change hands

Sean Strickland got robbed, like Sean said run it back. I think DDP should do an immediate rematch being that the win was so questionable. This isn’t like when Suga won the title, suga proved that he was the better fighter, DDP did not.

Sean was Pu$$ysanya in this match, turned on last 10sec and punching air, whole match moonwalked. It was close fight but DDP wanted it more.

All I know is that if you compare Stricklands face to ddp face after round 5 you would be silly to think ddp won. Sean clearly did more damage dricus had more control over how the fight played out. How are you supposed to score this fairly? What is more important in a ufc fight, damage inflicted or the ability to control an opponent.

I had it 4 rounds for Strickland, but it wasn’t extremely dominant. DC’s commentary is definitely the worst part of this fight, not the judges

1st round Strickland. Those that say , it was a robbery... come on... what you are saying is absolute non-sense. DDP, was on the front foot most of the fight. How he adjusted from the first round was a masterclass from DDP chasing a world title. He was a lot more aggressive than Strickland, a lot more. And DDP landed some big punches too, kicks , spin slaps, take downs. (An MMA masterclass) Seans jabs, lethal sure. But not enough. DDP at worst 3-1 / 3-2. DDP's split decision is 100% correct. Remember folks, if it was not for DDP being constantly on the front foot, the fight would never have been as attractive. DDP set that tone as a spectacle also. What a champ. Sean Strickland, also an absolute legend AND no-one can take away the fact the he will always be a champion and as real as they come. DDP, deserved man.
