Was President James Buchanan Gay? Visiting His Gravesite In Lancaster, PA

Was President James Buchanan in an intimate relationship with his long-time companion Vice President William Rufus King? Many believed they were, during their lifetime and following their deaths, historians have speculated about their relationship.
I visited both of their gravesites, on my cross-country road trip to in 2022. So, on this President's Day weekend I thought it would be a good time to finally post a video of those visits.
Buchanan is buried at Woodward Hill Cemetery in Lancaster, Pennsylvania and William Rufus King is buried at Live Oak Cemetery in Selma, Alabama.

Did you notice, Buchanan buried on Queen Street and King buried in "Queen City" (according to the Selma sign)? 🤔 I'll have to look for one of those books you showed. One of the things I notice, with most pre-FDR presidents is that they were buried among the common people in their hometowns, instead of at the modern day fee-based museum/library. In that respect I like that they return to being just another one of us. Great video Steve; I like that we get to see your journey through the cemetery!

Yes, but with the older ones it's much harder. Any perpetual care funds may have run out of money post 1970s or before and the ground is very uneven. The roads are narrow, even for a car and were graveled at best. You can't just mow a big flat area so there is a lot of small mower use and hand or weed-whacker trimming around the monuments. We have a problem with a local cemetery that the town has had to set up new managers.

The thing I found most interesting of Buchanan, is during the war of 1812, though he didn’t serve in the militia, he stole horses for the Army. Apparently that was a thing?! Fortunately we haven’t progressed to military related carjackings. Could you imagine: “Get out of the car lady, the 8th Automotive Battalion needs a troop shuttle!!!” Buchanan stole horses in the Baltimore area.

I had read in the past that Buchanan, years before he was President, actually was engaged to a young lady who died suddenly just weeks before their scheduled wedding. Buchanan was understandably devastated by this and some believe that he never married because he never got over the loss of his fiancee. Because he was a bachelor in the White House, his niece served as his official hostess, duties usually reserved for the First Lady.

He was engaged to Ann Coleman. She came from a prominent family who did not like the upstart Buchanan. Their engagement got on rocky grounds supposedly because he was paying her enough attention and was seen visiting a friend at the same time as another eligible young lady (which apparently was an innocent action). Ann broke off the engagement. Shortly afterwards she overdosed on laudenum, either on purpose or the "medicine" was ill prescribed. This did apparently have a strong impact on Buchanan who mourned heavily and reportedly avoided marriage stating that "... his affections were buried in the grave.” I could be wrong, but I think he always kept an image of her (painting?) at his home.

Mail on the desk said 'James Buchanan'. She cried, and, said," Elizabeth,I'm sorry." " What happened to Elizabeth?" " She died." He was engaged to Ann E. Coleman. That was the only case out of 200 subjects that came close to being a memory of being a famous person.

Catching up on your past videos. You amaze me Steve with your fascinating historical commentary. I lived in Camp Hill across the river from Harrisburg) in early 80's. We visited Lancaster for their farmers market plus there were still old-time carpenters making original wooden furniture in barns. If you purchased direct their items were much cheaper than what was sold in the City. What I remember hearing about Buchanan is that he refused to take sides on the slavery issue but as a defender of the Constitution he felt slavery was a constitutional right and had his own slaves.

Dang! AL to PA, you've been doing some driving! 👍😊 Thank you for your video. ❤❤👍👍😊😊 Buchanan was the last in a string of dismal, pre-Civil war presidents (he got blamed the most because he was the last one before the war). I do not know about Buchanan being a homosexual[1]. Buchanan probably did not respond to the rumors because the press (it was as vicious back then as the media is nowadays) would have claimed that he protested too much. I understand the curiosity factor; but I can understand why families did not want to share, for whatever reason(s) their family members' personal correspondence. Regarding privacy; Martha Washington burned all of the correspondence between her and George. Martha said that she did not want to share their most (written) intimate conversations with the world. After the Revolutionary war Martha desperately wanted him to return to Mount Vernon. She was not happy about his election to the presidency. Martha felt that she had shared enough of her husband with the people of the USA [i.e. Surveying the frontier, the French and Indian War (1754--1763) More surveying the frontier, the American Revolution (1775--1783), then two four-year terms as president - in NYC ... a long way from their home and extended family in Virginia] The club that restored Buchanan's gravesite did a nice job.👍❤ There are some really old gravestones in that cemetery. The main street along the cemetery had some very old houses still existing[2] ___________________________________________ 1.) But the normal range for either sex can range all the way from strong/hard to weak/soft without the person being homosexual or bi-sexual. So who knows? 2.) *Lancaster, PA* (from Wikipedia) Founded: 1729 Incorporated (borough) 1742 Incorporated (city) 1818 Founded by James Hamilton (1710--1783) Son of the American lawyer Andrew Hamilton (b. 1676 Scotland) Named for Lancaster, Lancashire, England " *James Hamilton purchased the land where the city of Lancaster is located for 5 shillings in 1734.* " I tried to find out how much that was in today's money but I hit a wall. People in Buchanan's day knew to leave well enough alone and keep their suspicions to themselves: in advance therefore on us today. Even electing him president.

Actually, there were lots of public rumors and accusations, and even Andrew Jackson called him gay, so people were just as homophobic then as they are now. ☹️

The next time I’m in Annville, Pennsylvania, I will check it out. If you can tell me whether or not you think I would be able to do it in a wheelchair. In other words is it very hilly Annville and Lancaster are only about 31 miles apart. You film that on my 59th birthday.

Hi Eve, if you are in a car, you can get pretty close to his grave. It’s pretty close to the road that goes to the cemetery. in the video, you can see there are steps leading up to his gravesite, so you may not be able to get too close.

I guess in those days, people in politics were either clueless or open minded on sexuality matters.

President Buchanan had courted some ladies when he was younger, including one who tragically died at only 23. It's said he never recovered emotionally from that and because of this, never married. Then, another woman's family denied him her hand in marriage because he supposedly only wanted her money. It's been speculated that Buchanan may have even been asexual, as the woman wrote words to the effect that he wasn't romantic, what is called "aromantic asexual" today. He did have the long friendship with Rufus King, which fueled a lot of rumors, as it would today. If a man isn't married by 40, it seems he's a "confirmed bachelor" and is in the closet. Look no further than the rumors that surround Republican US Senators Lindsay Graham and Tim Scott today. Times have changed and gay people can be open about their sexuality, but I think in certain conservative circles it is still taboo.

I had a great uncle who was roommates with his childhood best friend from the time they both returned from war in the Pacific until February 1981 when he got sick and died of pneumonia. Sadly his lifelong friend fell into the Kankakee river from an abandoned rail bridge not a month after and drowned. Love is love no hate filled book convinces me otherwise.

I share his last name and for years my family thought he was related to us but later found out he wasn’t. Many years ago my son told me about the thought that he may have been our first gay president. Related or not that doesn’t make any difference to me. I believe a man or woman who is gay could be a president but unfortunately due to James’ behavior he wasn’t a good president.
