Was Not Expecting This! (Abandon Kayaks/ Cosumnes River Misadventure)

Спорт

Went out for what I was expecting to be a simple paddle around the Cosumnes River Preserve, ended up being a sketchy paddle through some flooded, heavy wooded sloughs. Although I made it out find, a couple other kayaks didn't get so lucky! Looks like they flipped, lost their gear and hopefully swam to the shore and ditched the boats. I was not able to pull them on bail the water out because the kayaks did not have bulkheads or floatation. I hope this serves as a public service announcement to do your research before heading out, tell someone where your headed and always always wear your PFD.
It ended up being a beautiful paddle on Middle Slough and Lost Slough. A great area to explore, but you just need to check flows at Cosumnes before making the trek. If you have any questions about river flows, give us a call or check in at the CRP Visitor Center.

Another great video! I personally am of the mind that if you are going out. With or with out friends. Fill out a float plan or at least let people know. Family friends etc. I still do this even when going out on calm water with no water flow. As for online resources. I really only use it for information like gear and such that I am researching or watching video's. I hope whom ever lost their boats are safe. Should totally call the coast guard to let them know. Best case, you reunite a boat owner.

I stumbled on to your KZread channel today. I just got my first kayak having done a few canoe trips and white water rafting trips over the years. I am excited to try it. The one I got was from a neighbor that is moving and didn't want to take it with him. Nothing fancy, a cheap Potomac 100. I have to get a PFD and a couple other things before I take it out. Just wanted to say thanks for the videos.

I do have the side mounted feel free transom, with my new 2.5 Suzuki outboard, yak gear outriggers. But I do haa heart condition, which is why I wanted my motor. I recon all my different bodies of water, launches, always tell my friend where I'm going out of. But on one of your reviews helped me finally save and get my vessel for my setup. Learn from you guy's all the time. Ty, for taking the time on these vids. For us who may not be new to fishing, but respecting the ocean, the beautiful fish, and always coming home safe. You always need to be safe and careful on the water. I let a buddy talk me into canoeing some unknown dangerous water in the dark. It was the second night of a two day trip and we realized at sunset that we were not where we were supposed to be and we had 7-8 miles of unknown river between us and our car. I wanted to just camp another night and head out first thing in the morning and should have just insisted. We hit some really sketchy water in the dark and I will never do anything that stupid again!

Another great vid Dan. A lot of the problems with any outdoor adventure is being unprepared and a severe lack of knowledge. People fail to learn the craft before they head outdoors. This is not Instagram or KZreadrs faults. It’s been in place forever. I worked in Yosemite Valley in the 1990’s with USF and the YOSAR we’re constantly called out on SAR’s or body recoveries from people who went when they shouldn’t have! Be prepared, learn your sport or hobbies and know your abilities and when to turn back or not go at all. I want to see you on a Crescent Ultralite doing some bass fishing out there😁

Hey great adventure. The best adventures are when they don't go as planned. I like your safety advice but one additional thing I would say is don't kayak alone. I did a lot of backpacking in the wilderness all over California and elsewhere and I never felt comfortable hiking alone. If you get jacked up for whatever reason your partner could be the one to save you. We've had a bunch of floaters go missing in various locations here in Oregon and I've never really seen that happen around here. I have a feeling that is because kayaking has taken off and that means a lot of newbs getting in trouble. Maybe it would be good to find a local group of floaters and try to tag along with them.

Thanks for the comment. I agree with your advice about paddling alone for the most part, however kayaking is something I’ve done for over 30 years and often times being alone is my favorite part about it. I actually feel safer paddling alone because I don’t have to worry about the safety of anyone else. If someday I don’t make it back to the dock I hope my family knows I went out doing what I love.

@@HeadwatersKayak Maybe I should have re stated that to say that newbies should especially pair up with someone who has the experiecnce like yourself to help them avoid dangers like that swift section of current you encountered. Sometimes it's the wise choices that cooler heads make that keep people from getting into a bad situation in the first place. I admit I have gone out on hikes by myself but I also have been doing so since I was kid. Thanks for the reply.

Great video! I also appreciate the reminder that even experienced kayakers can encounter situations they consider sketchy. In my head, I sometimes tell myself: when I'm more experienced all things will be possible. LOL Not so true. Thank you so much for showing a dock entry. Would the process be the same if the dock were considerably higher (12+") than the kayak? Last summer, I had to do that. Fortunately, it was a sit-on kayak, so it was easier to let gravity help. But, I'm hoping to get a sit-in (considering the Sandpiper or maybe the Skylark, or the Pungo 125) with a larger cockpit because my small dog often kayaks with me--also, I don't bend as easily as I did 10 years ago. LOL Anyhow, those higher dock entries make me nervous. Also, thanks for saying you put all of your weight on the paddle. I have the Aquabound Stingray Posi-Lock Carbon, and people always tell me it's so fragile it'll break if I do that. I have not had reason to try it yet, but I thought these paddles were sturdier than what "people" (who don't have carbon) are saying. So glad I stumbled on your channel about 2 weeks ago. Have a fabulous weekend! Hope you get some paddling in.

Not a kayaker personally... yet... but i knew some people who were and they were always humbled and worried if they found a kayak without a passenger. They would always say that you have no way of knowing if they just got ejected and weren't able to get back in or if they got ejected and didn't make it back to shore. So they would always wait if it was a recent looking abandonment and see if someone came back for it

I keep dreaming of a fishing kayak. Something around 10 foot seems perfect, as long as it doesn't plow the water. 6'2" 175lbs when dry. PS Don't try the rapids with 3 men in a canoe! It doesn't go well. Front guy wobble left, middle guy wobbles right, and 3rd man goes F*$CK I need a place I can test gear out, I don't want to make a bad purchase. Plenty for fishing/camping gear, etc. My husband is 6'3" and exactly 200 lbs so it's a good 👍 fit for both he and me (not at the same time, lol). Shareware. And the Sitka XT which is 15’3” and 24.5” wide. I use the LT for day paddling and it fits me and a small day kit or over night kit just perfect. I’m 6’2” 230. If I bring more gear I use the XT. No Life vest or gear- T shirts and shorts We hIt many MANY rapids AND folded that thing up like nothing. Water was cold. We went down some deep ravines. At one spot we got out on north side of Consumnes before a rapid section because we heard it. But could not go around and went back in . We felt we had no choice. NEVER KNOWING WHERE WE WERE & never saw a map. No sunblock I fried like a onion, We had no clue it was a one way trip, no upstream, back to the car. A 27 mile drive by Jackson & Hwy 49 route Hours later burnt and tired we made it alive in one piece in a floating raft without a puncture. Oh no helmets or food either- The good ole days.

I love paddling out of the Cosumnes River Preserve. Never went to the right after Middle Slough, but might have to explore the Mokelumne when the flow is less than what you are showing, ha!! Have you ever paddled from the Preserve to Lodi Lake?

All you have to do is roll it and the water comes right out or tow it to a sallow area then roll it. That's about $1000 worth of free YAKS there!

i'm surprised you deemed those rapids sketchy. I must ask why you thought so. It seemed manageable and you were able to navigate around. My observations are there are lots of strainers around and that is dangerous. But I thought your skill level wasn't even approached so i'm curious if you could breakdown that scenario for me on why it was nerve racking.

Is there a method similar to getting into a kayak when the boat is lower than the dock?

Same general idea just way harder. Kee Your weight on the dock as long as you can. It helps to have a hand.

Is there anyway to tow those abandoned kayaks with a rope? It’s sad to me to see them left behind like that. Definitely safety first.

All marked paths are fine for beginners. You really have to push the Limits to even find this spot and it’s only swift when we have big water years. Summer time this spot is bone dry.

I think he has talked about that in one or more of his videos. I forget which one(s) or I would link it. You can however, add float bags into the empty spots at the ends. www.amazon.com/Harmony-Vinyl-Micro-Kayak-Floatation/dp/B0047H28V6/ref=sr_1_11?keywords=float+bag&qid=1566133213&s=gateway&sr=8-11 He has these linked in the description of a different video. Something I never even knew about. My little Ascend D10 sport yak has foam filling in the ends so using these is ootq.
