    Right? Like I’m white but my bf is a brown skinned Mexican and we plan on doing every celebration in our life in a traditional Mexican way. His whole family accepts me and his mom is always buying me clothes that are more in style with Mexicans and their culture. She loves when I’m apart of their culture. They actually find it offensive if I don’t want to participate in their culture. I’d be dammed if someone said I’m cultural appropriating when a whole Mexican family asked me to participate

    @@fromspace7 in America people of color are punished for our cultural attributes while often people not from that culture are celebrated for it. It’s not just a made up concept or people being overly sensitive it’s a real issue. If I can get hired for wearing braids but Kim Kardashian is celebrated for it that’s a systematic problem. Most people will call us sensitive without really understanding our racist history or the ways in which it still affects our society today. Just like any other issues, people get it wrong and there are gray areas. But it’s definitely a thing.

For example, I’m Trinidadian and of African descent, I am able to wear Indian wear without being told that it’s appropriation because of the unity that West Indians have. It’s also vice versa, where Trini’s of Indian descent can wear African wear and it is not seen as appropriation but appreciation. Her being Guyanese, to me, it’s normal. My parents have been living there all of their lives as well as me. When I decided to live abroad and met people with more diverse backgrounds I realized that I didn't look like a normal latina. I am not curvy, I am not "spicy" as the white hollywood stereotypes portray us. And I experienced many hate through the Middle East stereotypes (the ones concerning Islam and terrorism). The only way to break these stereotypes is to let people in, understand and try out cultures. If not, Hollywood and racism will write down our own narrative, will keep portraying us as terrorists, spicy femme fatales or some kind of toxic prejudice

I can also see how it would be really frustrating to constantly have to tell people what race you are. I think what it comes down to is everyone tailors their persona based on who they are around(e.g. if you are gay and have a bigoted relative you’re not gonna talk about relationships with them) and when someone is racially ambiguous it’s hard to know what you can say without offending someone.

Also, I've had my fair share of people that didn't believe I was a certain nationality. I guess because I don't look pale or tall enough? It is rather weird since I have an obvious accent. Technically it is cultural appropriation. But cultural appropriation is a neutral term it isn't inherently bad. And but yet the same Americans that were doing so took things from their culture for profit and used it on models (which this probably wouldn't sound bad but it's just the fact that when the people of that culture wear or do things related to their culture they were made fun of but when these other people do it there okay and highly respected). I this is the main reason why they are upset by it . The cultural appropriation was originally based on people who stole from a culture and claimed it as their own though.

I’ve seen similar stories on twitter as well. I’m half Irish and half Mexican but often get called or assumed to be white and have made stereotypical “white” remarks about me despite I’ve been primarily raised by the Mexican half of my family. I rarely see the Irish half. I prefer home made Mexican dishes than store or restaurants bought because it doesn’t taste good or the same that I’m used to. Growing up and even still to this day, I don’t feel like I fit in anywhere. I suppose it’s a form of identity crisis.

When we question and stop someone from experiencing someone’s else’s culture we only create deeper divides between us. And at the end of the day - it’s YOUR wedding day. From what I’ve read originally cultural appropriation was a term coined to represent cases where people of a certain ethnicity weren’t allowed to wear or do things that are traditional to them but it was seen as an okay thing to do or wear if you were the oppressor or the mainstream, but not within its cultural context. It’s also used to refer to cases where, even though they know where it originates from, an ethnicity will claim that they came up with it even though that’s not the case. It was coined for the purpose of dismantling that system, not to discourage people from wearing and doing things that other cultures do or wear. And thus it’s only cultural appropriation if it meets that criteria.

    I am not mixed race, but I struggled with this mostly as a child. My father is adopted. He is undoubtedly a white male, blue eyes, & blonde. My uncles, aunts, and grandparents are Hispanic. My maiden name was Daisy Acevedo -so I know the look people give when your name doesn't 'match' your ethnicity. It was after my Quinceanera when I started getting the most flack. This was when facebook first started instant messaging. My Aunt had tagged me in a photo with my Abuelita and within an hour I had so many IMs calling me a 'fake mexican' or a 'cultural thieving white B****'. And the more they said this, the harder I tried to prove myself- speaking more spanish (and loudly) at school so people could hear me. Purposely avoid 'white girl' things like going to starbucks and quit my cheer team. My mother at the time thought she was doing the right thing by making us move (we use to live 5 houses down from my Abuelita) and transfer schools - told me to quit speaking spanish, and purposely throw out clothes my Abuelita made for us (still upset about it). At first it worked, but I mean my last name was Acevedo so my friends would ask why, or when we'd share something from our home like 'my mom grounded me for not cleaning my room' and I'd say something like 'at least you didn't get hit with a chancla.' I'd get the wut? Look. I don't think I ever found my place but I didn't stop caring what people thought of my actions until college and my father was hospitalized from a work accident for 6 months. My Abuelita and Aunt came to my dorm almost every day to make sure I ate and continued going to class. They are my family and no one can convince me otherwise. Random strangers who just want to share rude opinions on what me and my Hispanic family should look like- how my complexion isn't right, my blood doesn't have the right DNA. All Im hearing is racism. And to those who think that you can't be racist to 'white people'. Its called RACIST, not 'anti-white'. So just because someone can see me as a 'white girl' doesn't mean I'm going to stop starting Christmas Tomales in September. Oh, and if you're Hispanic and can't make Tomales or speak spanish, or whatever anyone is using as proof you are not.... YOU. ARE. STILL. YOU. You don't have anything to prove, to anyone ever. The moment you come to that understanding fully, you'll become a lot less anxious and less tearing your self down for things you had no say in.

I wore one on my first birthday and I know how much it would mean not only to my mother, but to my grandmother, my cousins, my aunts and uncles, just everyone. I know how much it would mean to them and to myself. Now, will it be a bit odd to see a 5’10 black girl in Hanbok? Thelondonbadger Because as horrible as it is , it is part of History, and I much rather respect it in order to not forget it , instead of appropriating it without being aware of half of the knowledge you cited ...I mean how many people do you believe really know how horrible and tyrannical the Aztec empire and their cults were !? Also we respect Vikings , Picts , Hans and Moguls , Tibetan ,which were equally as brutal of cultures as the Aztecs ! Like have you ever seen a Halloween costume of the Dalaï-lama or Genghis Khan !?

    I read the comment where the girl said you’re switching between cultures so easily and that you are not black. Yes, we know you’re not completely black lmao. As a long time watcher I’ve known from the get go that you have some Indian in you, and just because you don’t choose to display that side of you, doesn’t mean you’re not Indian. That’s the cool part of being mixed is that you have the outlets to let you explore deeper into either culture/religion and learn more and partake in either. As a full Indian woman, I do not see this as appropriation, I was so excited and mesmerized at your choice because it wasn’t what I would’ve expected, but it was a stunning choice! Just because someone doesn’t look like what a certain race person “should” look like, doesn’t mean anything. Plus you said you chose the lehnga for your family to make them happy! So I think you did well girl! I knew you had Indian in you so it was cool to see you touch that side of you for such a momentous occasion! Love from back home in Toronto♥️♥️

    People kill me. Who is the authority on weather something is appropriated? Does this leave any space for appreciation? Which is why I believe it’s nonsense because more often than not, the intent isn’t malicious in nature. The offended party is often in the minority and the issues at hand minor in consideration of things that affect ones day to day existence.

    No one dares to do cultural appropriation right out of misunderstandings and fear of backlash. I think that appreciating another culture should be handled just like essay/plagiarism. I acknowledge the authors work and I appreciate it. But you don't copy word from word. You mix it in with your own style. Change the words. Have the essence of it and all the while acknowledging that it's still not yours, still inspired and still appreciated.

    Brittany B.Brown that’s not correct, clothing in general, even when significant to a culture, people are glad and happy when people embrace that. Especially when they find it beautiful. Obviously there is cultural significance, it can mean different things but ultimately when someone embraces something like traditional dress, the people who wear that as their heritage, as their culture feel the upmost pride and glory, that something that is part of who they are is deemed to be so beautiful. People in general are simple beings, somethings that’s ours, in which we love and treasure being embraced by others, it’s quite a happy feeling. A triumphant feeling. Of course people may where it wrong may not no the full meaning behind something but even just to have something like a bracelet, a nose ring a dress to be embraced and be praised is something that is of the highest expectation and compliment to their people. I feel proud when others embrace my heritage and find it beautiful and most of the worlds people are like that.

    This cultural appropriation thing hurts everybody. Especially the minorities its supposed to protect. We used to fight against stereotyping, such as "all Japanese people wear kimonos," but not its "only Japanese people wear kimonos," which will lead us back to stereotyping! Also now if someone who doesn't look Japanese but is, wears a Kimono, they get attacked, essentially for not looking Japanese enough. This makes all these anti-racism people have an idea of what a race should look like, and call out the people who don't fit that for appropriating. This affects my friend, who is half black half white. She is pretty pale, but has natural kinky/coily hair and wants box braids, but even her parents say she looks too white and will be called out for appropriating. These rules of who wears what is hurting anyone who doesn't "look" like the race they belong to!

  • @maryhicks9211

    @maryhicks9211

    My thoughts exactly. Why is it you can not wear this just because it's nice or well made. Nope you ain't white enough to black enough to or Indian enough to but yet like you say isn't this going back to stereotyping people. Yes I fully understand embrace your culture and heritage but I don't have a heritage. I'm white I guess but my grandmother was American Indian my dad has Irish in my other grandma had German in her there's black in me and other stuff so what do I wear how do I fix my hair um People think I'm white people think my son is mixed because he's got an anfo but he's not mixed it's my blood in him I've got curly hair I've got to keep it long so I don't have curls so like this lady in video I don't fit in with any one race. People are so rude now days. I mean really they ask my son if he's mixed and ask me to I'm talking complete strangers. People wouldn't have done that when I was growing up in the 80s . Idk I just think all of this shit is crazy. Bottom line we all breath the same we all come into this world the same we all die and we all bleed the same color. So there for we are all PEOPLE . People who can do and wear what we want to. If it isn't hurting anyone else then leave it alone. Just because a person looks white doesn't mean they're white. Same goes for any race. Not all people are going to look like they're supposed to.

    I kind of feel like most of the people who like to call out cultural appropriation are actually people who don't know anything about or didn't grow up in that culture. Taking your example of wearing a kimono: a museum was bashed (by mostly Americans, too) for offering kimonos to be tried on by visitors because it was "cultural appropriation". But if you ask natives from Japan, they're fine with it. They actually support it because it shows that people love and enjoy their culture and tradition.

  • @lilyalexander9486
    @lilyalexander94865 жыл бұрын

    I think cultural appropriation is just taking something from a culture that is not your own and essentially acting like you invented it for your own gain. Example: miley cyrus and Marc jacobs decided to put Mileys hair in bantu knots for the VMA's-but instead of just saying that they're bantu knots, they rebranded them as their own unique hairstyle. She had an opportunity as a public figure to show bantu knots as something cool and beautiful to all kinds of people but seeing as how most people didn't like this phase of her, by rebranding it she made people associate that hairstyle with bad things. This is just my opinion but i feel like theres nothing wrong with loving another culture or being inspired- just give credit where credit is due, ykno?
