Was Flatts Lane Parkrun as HARD as EVERYONE said?

Спорт

Welcome/welcome back to Those 2 Runners!
This week's video sees us take on the 13th hardest parkrun in the UK...Flatts Lane parkrun!
Flatts Lane parkrun is a two-lap course around the very beautiful Flatts Lane Country Park, with the most brutal hill. We were challenged to run up the hill both times, but did we make it?
Join us as we take on Flatts Lane parkrun, one of our most epic parkrun challenges yet!
Thanks for watching!
Keep on running!

As a former competitive XC/trail runner this is my local Parkrun and I love it. Nearly every runner up front pushes too hard on the hill then relaxes for a rest at the top. The key to a fast time is to do exactly the opposite. An extra 50% effort on the hill will see you running maybe 1 min/mile faster, but there same effort on the following gentle downhill will see you running 2 min/mile faster. Can't tell you how many times half a dozen runners have gone past me blowing very hard up that hill, them I've flown past them within 100m of the top. Happens every time. For a quick time you need to maximise the area under the graph. The exact same thing used to happen in XC MTB races when I did those. I think it just feels more natural to push hard when there's more resistance due to gravity. But if you train yourself to do the opposite you'll be quicker overall.

The hilliest parkrun I've done is Joe Creason in Louisville, Kentucky. Much like this course, there's a really big hill that you run up and down twice. The uphill is gradual and the downhill is super steep. It was such a super fun course!

I bet that Park run course would be beautiful in the fall. It's hard for a camera to show how hilly it was but judging by everyone's efforts it definitely looked hard. I've had some hilly 5k over the years. Some of the more memorable re aces including 3000 to 4000 feet of climbing over the course of a half marathon. I also live at 4500 feet elevation so that adds up too. I love going back to lower altitude for racing. Thanks for taking me along on your run.

@@those2runnersI wouldn't say I am good at running hills - I just accept them and try to get up as quickly as possible while not burning out. A lot of our races here where I live are downhill courses. There are a bunch of races here sporting 1000 - 3000 foot drops over the course of a race, which makes for some blazing times.
