Was Casanova Actually A Womanizer? | Casanova | Absolute History

His name has become synonymous with the term “womanizer”. But a new perspective may shed a more positive light on the life of Giacomo Casanova. A true son of the renaissance, Casanova was a musician, a cleric, a spy and a lover. He led a tempestuous life where he amassed and lost fortunes, invented the National Lottery, fought duels with Counts, and had the most famous love life of all time. This dramatised documentary series is based upon a collection of letters left by Casanova in the library of Duchov Palace where he died at the age of 73, all but forgotten by a world that he had charmed, amazed and shocked only a few years before.

Does no one else see how his hypersexuality probably stems from his encounters with the maid, who clearly abused him as a child? If that was his only form of affection as a child, it's no wonder it's all he pursued in the future but never settled.

Does it mention how old she actually was? I might've missed it. It said "had a very young sister who was a maid in the house". In the cinematic part of the video it shows an adult woman but was it actually? Especially since girls at the time were 'adults' much younger? Not excusing just curious about the actual dynamic there.

The problem with Cassanovas lifestyle is that eventually age catches up with u. Having lived a life of sexual pleasure, there will come a time where that cannot be maintained. Without a relationship built on trust & fidelity, one can easily find themselves quite alone, for physical pleasure is fleeting, while the spiritual & emotional pleasure of having a relationship based on trust, faithfulness and friendship is much more lasting & satisfying as we age. This has been my pursuit over the yrs and now towards the twilight yrs of my life, that pursuit is bearing fruit. Ageing is not for the fainthearted and unless one has prepared themselves, physically, emotionally and spiritually, those yrs can be difficult on all of these levels. As u sow & so u reap, is as true today as it was, when first penned.

Why do you think, that a relationship with a person of an opposite sex somehow grants an easy experience of aging? I have discovered, that avoiding an endless sea of jealousy, conflict and drama really helps to avoid the consequences of one's age increasing. Also, I have more time and inspiration to broaden my horizons, so to speak. I do not have to justify my every deed to a jealous man, which is incredibly tiring. It's like a deliberate act of killing a partner's will to enjoy living. Now I am free to enjoy, whatever I want - hobbies, nature, conversations, art. I've had several relationships, and they always end with men being jealous to flowers and trees, literally. Suicide threat. Stalking. Intrigues with friends. I must be incredibly seductive is what I have understood from this. Now I'm without a man, and I feel relaxed. Very, very relaxed.

@@khosmoz If u read my reply I am speaking of a relationship based on mutual trust, respect & friendship. It appears by your reply, the men in your life have not demonstrated these qualities. Choosing a lifelong partner is no easy matter, but one thing I know, that does work and work well, is to avoid the physical side of a relationship before marriage. Reason being, it allows both parties to build that relationship based on trust, respect & friendship. That will be the foundation of a lasting relationship and gives each an opportunity to observe the other before rushing into a defacto or marriage. If a man cannot control himself while courting, then u can safely assume his lack of self control will extend into other areas of his life & most likely he will not remain faithful after marriage, especially when the trying times come. So my question to u would be, did u give it time before u entered a physical relationship. Two to three yrs is a good amount of time. Some will say they got married within weeks and their marriage remained strong throughout their lives. These are the exception and u only need to observe those around u to see that. By following the above advice and it is not new by any means, u tend to eliminate the ones who do not have what it takes, to form a lasting relationship. Yet your comment of remaining single is also valid and certainly offers other advantages like not having to answer to anyone. . .well except your Maker.

@@Blue1Sapphire As I am not christian, I do not have to get married in church. So I did not abstain from sexual relationships in any part of my life. We are very different people, you and me. This is, however, no obstacle for mutual trust, yet I have met some total buffoons. I live in a culture, where living together without marrying is totally acceptable. That way one can find out, if the person has any hidden "qualities", that only come out in private space. Good thing, I found them out before marrying one of them. Maniacs, slobs, gamblers, drunkards, oh, so many "nice" traits. I do not see any reason, why I should be tolerating any of that for my entire life or waiting for making love after seeing this stuff. No way. It's like dragging a corpse and expecting for it to get better. Barely any man is a virgin. Why should women be?

@ 33:38 she’s stating Casanova is leaving out the dynamic male power and female powerlessness. She states “This isn’t about just what I want from you, it’s also about what you can give to me” that literal sense of equality. I think she worded this wrong? Doesn’t that focus only on his pleasure and not both their pleasure? She also stated HE would end the affair before boredom set in. His outlook revolutionary and makes him a trailblazer. My guess is he left a trail of p’d off women. Im sure many of these women wanted to have him to themselves and believed that he loved them. I get the “I can give to you and you can give to me” narrative they’re trying to get across. But it seems to me Casanova was trying to feed his own ego, saying and doing what he needed to please himself. Seems in the end, his life was loveless, lonely and without purpose. Tbh I didn’t know Casanova was a real person and this was an interesting documentary.

But it was clear from the beginning that he was abused by the maid and that probably affected him his whole life. Perhaps because he was abused, he had more empathy towards women that other men of his era did not. After all it was much more common for women to be sexually abused at that age. Many diaries state so by women of the time. Most marriages were just aweful for women of the time and the sex was often also and many husband's had lovers and the wife was just the breeder. A deed many women write they disliked and many describe in their diaries of their sexual encounters as nothing more than rape like experiences

@@istandwithgod2011 You can't possibly be claiming that diaries are representative of the majority of households in Europe at the time, because that claim would have to be supported by more than a few diaries. The posit that promiscuity actually benefits women in any way is false. The shift from arranged marriages to romance was not the product of Cassanovaesque hedonism...from this video you can see how futile it all was for him.

Woe is the Karen scorned! If you can not separate the difference of time periods & their cultures vs our particular time frame & culture you will never be a student of history. You musn't compare 18th Century Italy, France & England with today's very divided culture. God's word will always be there for those of us that are penitent, humble & try our best to serve him but you have mistaken your particular moral beliefs as if they should have always no matter what been that way for everyone "CULTURALLY". Your judgemental comment shows a shallowness & a sort of infantile patience & understanding of this World as if it should always bow toward your beliefs & damn them who didn't live up to your expectations of yourself. I would say your moral Superiority is the worste & most Woke comment on a channel that isn't making up some story rather they are simply giving a very well presented historical story backed up with Casonivas own letters. As they say, " Don't kill the messanger". I hope you find happiness & peace in your life particularly your love life. Your comment showes a great unhappiness in that area which innturn effects many areas in our lives. Married or not find that true intamcy in your ideal relationship. Who seduces the partner is always the woman. What a man can do is whether or not to surrender to female lust, but this must be done through a dramatization in which the true roles are reversed. This is how the man (the prey) seems to seduce as if he were a predator. The misfortune of most men is to try to abolish representation, or worse, to be what they are not (desired).
