With regard to delighted halfling 1.) costs 1 mana 2.) can tap to help cast anything with 1 colorless mana 3.) also can tap for WUBRG to cast legendary spells (not just creatures) and make them un-counterable 4.) removal magnet that can potentially eat a removal card for your commander or synergy piece 5.) has 2 toughness in a meta heavily dominated by Orcish bowmasters 6.) counters show up in every level of gameplay, not just high levels of play. So having added layers of protection will always be more beneficial. That card is amazing

Yep, easily one of the best mana dorks in commander... you can cast your commander, and guarantee that it won't be countered.

I still think that it's ONLY solidly a must-include in cEDH, though, which was the point they were making. It's a good card in casual as well, but not as good as Birds of Paradise, or indeed any other mana dork that taps for one color or another. You cast nonlegendary spells much more often than legendary spells, and your commander isn't very likely to get countered, save for a very select group of commanders that just combos with a ham sandwich. So, in general, the second ability does less work here than it does in competitive. Sure, spells get countered in casual as well, BUT. Those cards are, at least in my experience, big stompy creatures (which, on average, are nonlegendary) or interaction (almost exclusively nonlegendary).

@@xxhellspawnedxx I think what you’re saying is true, however a lot of that comes down to personal budget/deck building preferences and what you’re going for with your deck. I like having redundancy in my decks and a mana dork that has built in anti-counter capabilities “delighted” me. Any deck it goes into would be pretty happy to have it. Aside from everything said and every scenario that can be constructed; Delighted Halfling is one of the BEST at doing what it does.

I came back to Magic this year after about a 10 year hiatus. First thing I did was trade in my lingering collection to my LGS for $700 store credit so I could start fresh, and I’ve honestly had a blast. I’ve got 6 decks right now but I built and dismantled about 20 over the course of the year. Wilds of Eldraine was the first booster box I’d purchase since Dragon’s Maze. Your channel (and EDHRec as a whole) has been my go to site for brewing. My LGS would like to thank you for inspiring me to buy so many neat cards I’ve discovered from watching you guys 😂

Your underselling how good the one ring is. It warps games. You need ways to remove indestructible and you need an answer now! The thing is, if your decks are allready tuned, that doesnt feel oppressive at all, cause everything has to be removed at best yesterday. And thats the point: that meta is hella boooring. Its not fun to constantly have the feeling to need to play two card combos that are really hard to interact and 30+ removals or the outrun everyone tactic and play 20 tutors and then combo of, but the one ring is one of those cards that definetly leads toward it. Run faster or remove everything and then run faster. How "fun" and "healthy". I know some few guys like that playstyle. But if your in that powerlvl you definetly forget what a card like that does to the powerlevels below. It just dont belong there.

Can you guys explain how roaming throne works with different cards? For example, I have it in my Wilhelt Zombie Deck, I do not understand the interaction with Wilhelts second effect: if i sack a Zombie, do I have to sack another one, or do I have the choice to sack a second Zombie? If I do so, how many cards do I draw? Does the "then you draw a card" ability also activate twice? I have no idea how this card works :D

  • @RBGolbat

    @RBGolbat

    6 ай бұрын

Wilhelt’s second ability is all one triggered ability. The trigger is “at the beginning of your end step”. So you have the option to either Sac 2 Zombies to draw 2 cards, Sac 1 Zombie to draw 1 card, or sac no Zombies to draw no cards. Note that since both triggers go on the stack separately, you can sac a non-decayed Zombie when given the first chance to sacrifice, then sacrifice one of the two Decayed zombies created by the first triggered ability at the second trigger.

I think Aftermath is going to be a set where some real key piece cards are sneakily hiding for the future of this format. The good cards from the set are really solid and fill a specific design space that others dont have. Narset Enlightened Exile, Leyline Immersion, Tyvar the Belicose, Deification, and even the new Tazri are all under priced right now. That set is going to be an under appreciated hit in the next 5 years.

Question : Reverse the polarity - instant... so technically when the pre-combat main phase rolls around and your opponent tries to recruit a creature, it is a spell cas on the stack, right? So Reverse the Polarity and counter that creature spell ;) Canonically it works - the 9th Doctor counter-teleported Margaret Slitheen in "Boomtown" I think.

Dana’s take on the number of variants is very much appreciated. I adore it. It gives me options that I like. I sometimes love the alternate art, and I absolutely have to have it. SNC is a great example. Loved the world, the vibe, the style, I mean Ob Nixilis in a pin stripe suit was *chef’s kiss*. But on other cards I very much appreciate that I can nab something that gets me the effect cheaper because I don’t prefer any of the art styles. It’s win win for me, but I hear so many people just crap on the alternates. I hear it, I get it, but it’s another spot for me to express my style in the game.

Narset, Enlightened Exile was the best card to ever come out for me personally because Jeskai is my colors, and the original Narset, Enlightened Master was one of the cards that got me into Magic to begin with. Built her into an Agro Spellslinger using Combat Tricks, and Gotcha Spells and she has performed beautifully. The way I built her she can start hitting for lethal out of nowhere, and scale to the power level of its opponents without needing the same power cards in its own 99.

I love how positive this show is, but I feel a little weird that some of the most alarming missteps of Hasbro weren’t mentioned in this episode (Pinkerton’s and massive layoffs being the freshest, but there were others from this year). Even a quick shoutout at the beginning saying y’all weren’t gonna cover certain topics. Maybe it’s just where I’m at with my gradual and perpetual disenfranchisement from this game, so this feedback may honestly not even be that relevant for where y’all are at as players of the game and stewards of a largely optimistic community. Love what you do, so maybe I’m just sad that the company that makes the game I’ve invested myself in has made such alarming missteps 😕 On the year from a product perspective, so many successful avenues for new player’s to get started having fun at a table ASAP! It’s never been easier to spend fifty dollars and get started in this format 🙂

I feel like my deck building has progressed a fair bit, but part of why I felt like this year was great for Commander was the way I play, I have a bunch of Casual decks that are a blast to play because not 'trying so hard' leaves space for some weirder cards to shine. Who knew how useful a Dwarven Miner could be, I think stuff like that should see more play, same with Spurnmage Advocate, give back your ally some cards they can use and kill an attacking creature by tapping a 1 mana 1/1?? People sleep SSSSSSSOOOOO hard on the better Advocates. I have enjoyed seeing new cards that scratch the same itch as decks I have, I have a Pavel Maliki deck that runs a lot of cards you'd run in Yargle and Multani (and if you had access to Red, you could run even more IMHO), but it's still doing it's own thing. I personally love Wake the Dragon and Too Greedily, Too Deep, they're not the best cards in some ways, but they have such great art and flavor, and paying 7 mana to reanimate the best creature AND wipe the board seems somewhat ridiculous in some metas. Wow, didn't know about Ensnared by the Mara, that card is low-key amazing! Hot Take: The One Ring is a good card, but it's actually too slow at drawing to be a truly great card, and unfortunately it attracts attention as if it WAS a great card. If you had access to U, B, and/or G you already had better things you could be doing, you can actually argue that in some board states you'd MUCH prefer to have drawn a Harmonize over The One Ring, that's a weird place to be for a card that people openly freak out about. If you're comboing off with it go nuts, but again, you could have just Thassa's Oracle/Consultation and won.

I agree with everyone's opinions regarding Roaming Throne... no one in my pod runs the card because it's such a boring too-good card. Even though it's a new card, it immediately raised a nostril like older annoying "staples" like Smothering Tithe.

Let me tell you guys... as a Doctor Who fan, the Doctor Who set hit HARD. Ive completed two custom builds (Jenny Flint/Madam Vastra Partners and Davros) and I'm still brainstorming a few more. They are already near the top of my list of what I want to pull out first on game night. I really think the set is going to be a sleeper hit as more and more experimentation happens over time. You have the die hard Whovians like me that are quickly diving deep into the niche characters that we love like Jenny and Vastra, but I think non-who fans are going to find more to play around with as the set simmers. One guy in my playgroup that has never seen an episode is working on a Danny Pink deck for example. I also think the set is full of future staples. Cyber Conversion, Martha Jones, Barbara Wright, RMS Titanic, Dinosaurs on a Spaceship, Vashta Nerada. Cybermand Squadron, Everybody Lives. Just a handful of cards I have slotted into no Who themed decks that are already more than pulling their weight. Dont even get me started on the juiced Sagas that I have slotted into Narci.

I think I will be fine with universes beyond, when we get some universes within set giving us lots of those cool designs and aswell the heaps overpowered ones as a in universe version. I noticed getting a tiny bit salty getting crushed by universes beyond stuff. I mean definitely people are going to buy that stuff if it's op or an interesting design no matter whether they like the universe behind it. Sorry for the salt. But that's a thought I get with 2023 it's for me the big universes beyond year and that lowers my view on this year even if we had super cool designs in actual magic sets. 🤔 My favorite so far is Agathas soul cauldron that I had the luck to open and it's been such an interesting card to brew arround. And I am planning to build some stuff arround at least one of the witches from woe.... 😊.. Sooo my hopes for 2024... Stil a reprint from necromancy in the momentary normal frame... Maybe making out of krosan verge a cycle finally. The announcement for some universes within set some day in the future, even if that will be done possibly earliest in 5 years. By now kind of happy with the announced Standart sets by now mostly waiting for that squirrel necromancer from bloomburrow.... So yep.... Feeling kinda Allright with magic... Oh in I kinda hope wizards takes a step back with making new op card designs in every set. They can throw in a couple per set, but atm the power creep feels very very very real. 🤔

I'm gonna disagree with the design of Universes Beyond stuff. The release of them with no "pure" MtG version is a massive detriment to the game. Godzilla cards being skins worked because it let's you engage with either or, but now, you HAVE to jump into and have your deck start to feel like Fortnite. Designing an MtG version alongside it would do a lot to alleviate, but the current design genuinely bothers me, and I find it significantly worse.

I'm actually a huge fan of all the different versions of cards. -It pays more artists. -By getting more art out there, is a greater chance that someone finds their new favorite art. -It drives down the cost of all but the most premium version of a card, because there's more available. -Someone may get excited to discover more versions of their favorite cards to collect.

LOTR was good. Close enough to MTG, brought in new players, very profitable for WotC… outside that, I’m not sure what else was “good” about 2023 for MTG. I would agree that they have learned occasionally how to build pre-con decks but it was very hit and miss. There was typically one deck that ended up valued at 2x all the others in the series…

Pretty much the direct inverse. This year, the game repeatedly smothered itself in story and theme I actively disliked; I don't think Dominaria is a cool place, I don't care about Phyrexians and I actively hate Doctor Who and Lord of the Rings' intrusion into Magic. Loving Eldraine and Ixalan meant that at the tail end of the year I think I played more Magic than I played for the entire year before it - but things like the One Ring and Sheolrded being ubiquitous means that I'm constantly being stopped short in games and going: oh yeah this thing I hate. Real bad year! Plus there was the Pinkertons incident which it's hard to put out of my mind. This was my 20th year playing Magic. It should have been a celebration for me. Instead what I felt like was that the company that made a game I loved were making constant decisions to satisfy people who weren't me. Real frustrating and unpleasant experience.

I hate Orcish Bowmasters in Commander. I run enchantress decks and can draw 2-5 cards a turn. I don't mind being punished for drawing cards. But Bowmasters lets you ping anything. My opponent's creatures should not die to Bowmaster triggers because I am drawing cards... Additionally, Bowmasters can be abused with wheels similar to Hullbreacher. I like the design idea for Orcish Bowmasters but I do not like the execution. Please make a new version of Bowmasters with text along the lines of "when an effect an opponent controls would cause them to draw a card, you may deal one damage to that player or any target creature that player controls"; this will fix the problem and be a fair way to punish card draw.

I don't know if I would call delighted halfling overhyped. I think people value it highly but I think they do that because having your stuff countered is like in the top 3 feel bad things you can do to casuals in Magic. So halfling, Cavern of Souls, and other anti counter tech get more love even though they don't actually result in significantly more wins.

Having commanders be good at specific things is the thing I have to disagree with. I'd rather have Commanders that can be build 10+ different ways, if I sit down across from a Muldrotha ya sure they're going to be doing graveyard stuff but how they're doing that is still a mystery. If I sit down across from a Pantlaza, I know exactly what they're doing every single time. It makes Commanders boring when they're one trick ponies.

Is there a point where this podcast won’t write off criticisms of wotc as “very online mad twitter minority”? I really went in wondering how long it would take to get there and it was like the first thing. I get not wanting to be overly negative but isn’t “twitter mad lol” getting old at this point? Wizards had massive layoffs this year despite record profits and literally sent the Pinkertons after someone. Like at some point can we move past”angry online people” narrative?

We didn't and won't ever 'write off' something as serious as mass layoffs as "Twitter mad lol" and it's frankly disheartening to read that accusation. This episode was just about the health of the EDH format, not about the many mishaps and controversies that Wizards has flubbed this whole year. We'll happily call out the overdramatics online that arise about the health of the format because frankly there are *tons* of people more angry about card bans than about people losing their jobs, and that effing sucks. We are heartbroken for the people who lost their jobs. If you think we'd call that "Twitter mad lol" then you haven't been paying attention. And if you're only here for people talking about controversies, then we're sorry to disappoint you, because that's not the only thing we'll dwell on. Good day to you.
