Warwickshire Hunt - Great Barn, Upton Estate - Boxing Day 2023
A lower than normal turnout also saw less land covered than previous years by the Warwickshire Hunt at their biggest meet of the year.
Convicted huntsman Will Goffe began hunting on the Upton Estate owned by the Waley-Cohen family. It was on the Upton Estate that a fox was put up and hunted up towards Sugarswell before turning back down and heading into Shenington Hirons Covert. This is a wood that we have seen many foxes running from the hunt over the years. Goffe, also knowing this, positioned himself at the bottom of the covert with his back to the hounds in the wood behind him, looking out across the valley to check on the progress and direction of the fleeing fox. The fox headed out of the woods, down into the valley and up to where our sab was positioned on land belonging to Paul and Patricia Gibbs. The hounds soon followed, taking the exact line that the fox had taken. The fox was hunted across the Gibbs land over to Shenington where it took refuge down a badger sett.
Our vehicle sab then saw the hounds trying to get down into the badger sett before huntsman Goffe gathered the hounds and left just as the foot sab approached the sett. Putting a dog down a badger sett is an offense and this particular sett was also located on land belonging to the Gibbs
With illegal hunting, complicit landowners and active badger setts being interfered with these are yet more crimes happening on Thames Valley Police’s Patch by the Warwickshire Hunt.
Several incidents have now been logged with TVP Rural Crime Taskforce and so far they continue to allow the Warwickshire Hunt to break the law and put road users at risk on their patch. We will keep you updated on the lack of action taken by TVP.
