In September of 1951, Dad got assigned to London as a USN Lieutenant. I, having been born a few days after VJ Day, had my 6th birthday aboard ship. We lived in a nice, rented home in the south of London, and I started school. We often drove or rode a bus to downtown, and I started seeing great piles of brick rubbish, and thus was introduced to "The Blitz". This was compounded by gas masks hanging in the garage, and air raid drills, when we had to get into the shelter adjacent to the garage. Britain was still rationing food and such; I well remember when sugar went off ration the next year, and I was able to buy penny candies at the sweets shop. A few years later, Dad was assigned to a Naval base in the Philippines, thus I also got introduced to the War in the Pacific. The British people, and the Filipinos, have long impressed me as heroes in their own right.

My Grandmother worked in Croyden as senior secretary working for the director of a number of factories. She started at the bottom and was moved to work for him when they realised she spoke fluent french, She always talked about been in the shelters singing war songs. Helping Mums with their little ones. Just mucking in with everyone else. During the day going all over London to meetings with her boss. Funniest story she told me was she became very adept at removing her stockings and jewelry at speed before going into a shelter she was worried the other women would think she was trying to lord it over them Her boss always supplied her with stockings as no secretary of his would be allowed into a meeting with bare legs. Strange thing ti fixate on in war time. She quickly picked up a thick accent she turned on the second she entered the shelter. She said how strange it was walking back to her Aunts seeing a bombed house then the house next door still standing looking almost untouched. Before the war she taught deportment, elocution and French Great grandma thought she just worked in the secretary pool she'd have locked her in her room if she knew she went every where with a Man. She even left clothing and stockings anything that might catch her out with her Aunt before returning to Yorkshire. She met my Grandad traveling to London and back on the train.

Good to see one I have not seen. This was great. Thank you! I find this dark part of history. Such raw heroism, uncertainty, the collective good of a whole country won their survival. It's reality that Britain could of easily been done in by Germany. It could of happened, it came unusually close.

@astralclub5964 Actually it was. As brutal as the Soviets were, Soviet plans were not mass genocide. I suggest you read about the NAZI Generalplan Ost. And while America and Britain were not willing to launch World War III to liberty Poland, there was diplomatic support that aided the Poles, especially when Soviet controls became less brutal. This was a factor in Solidarity's eventual success which began the unraveling of the Soviet Empire.

11 You claim to be of Mahomet, Moses, Jesus of Nazareth while they are not your prophets and are no longer on the earth. How can Abraham Lincoln who died in 1865 be the president of the Americans today? Can a corpse be the prophet of the living? What is this proverb? 12 When you say that Jesus Christ or Mahomet is your prophet, it is an abuse of language, just like your presidents who say that it is God who established them, while it is their population who established them by votes. How can a dead man be the prophet of the living? And how can a prophet say that he is the last prophet? If I tell you that after me there will no more be prophets, this will mean that the world will come to an end on the day of my death. But if the world continues, this will mean that I am a false prophet or you misunderstood me. It is as if Donald Trump was saying that he is the last president of the United States. The notion of last prophet is an imbecility. Salvation through a holy book or a dead prophet is an imbecility. But you, if you are a son of God, no matter what leads you out of a religion, you shall never seek another religion or a holy book that would be better than the others but you shall seek the living prophet of your time and he will tell you what you need to do to be saved. Outside of a living prophet, there is no Word of God. All those interpretations of holy books that you consume in your temples, churches, mosques and synagogues are transgenic food, food for pigs.
