Warriors Draft Curry I The Pick That Screwed The Knicks

Спорт

NBA draft night in 2009 didn’t unfold as planned for New York. Instead it was the trajectory of another long-suffering franchise, on the country’s opposite coast, that was forever altered.

Precisely. Ending up in Golden State alongside Monte Ellis when he was at his best allowed him to develop. Anyone with half a brain who watched him at Davidson would have known he had the potential to be the best player on a team (not the all-time great he has become, but still an All-Star caliber player), but his slight build and those ankles would have rolled all over the Madison Square Garden floor if they pushed him too soon.

Great question. Golden State seems to have run into so much good luck after picking Steph that you can't say it happened by design. As someone else pointed out, had the Warriors not sold the team to Guber and Lacob, Steph's career could have gone in an entire different direction. You also have to consider the effect of Steph's early ankle injuries and how they contributed to him being the biggest bargain in the NBA for a few years and allowed the team additional financial flexibility. Then you add the drafting of Klay, Draymond along with the shrewd move of trading away Monta Ellis for Bogut, the firing of Mark Jackson, hiring Steve Kerr, signing KD, losing KD and Klay, then Steph to injury then winning the chip 2 years later. Talk about improbable!

@@ericg3496 James Dolan, owner of the Knicks wanted to sign Jeremy to a decent contract under 4 million (most likely below 3 million with possibly only for one year) which he thought was quite generous, but instead of immediately attempting to sign the player, Dolan waited till the end of the season which was a bad move. Houston offered 25 million for a 3 year contract which the Knicks didn't want to match, and also because Carmelo Anthony didn't like the position he was going to be in if Jeremy Lin stayed with the team. The Knicks never got enough with Carmelo alone on the team, since, he likes playing hero ball, and Houston decided to give the team to James Harden rather than let Jeremy Lin lead. There's a lot of drama up in the box seats on the ownership level and players are just the pawns.

Remember Warriors had garbage ownership around this time we’re trash for almost a decade since 1993. Things changed when new ownership came in 2011-2012. So at the time he wasn’t so lucky. Things changed when new ownership came. The Knicks need new ownership or the NBA should get involved and move Dolan out. It’s sad Knicks haven’t been winners since at least 2000. Same thing in Toronto it was bad management and terrible leadership from MLSE until new leadership came. Allot of these teams are bad because of poor leadership inside the ownership. Same thing in Seattle when the Starbucks guy brought the Sonics in 2001 everything went to hell.

From a lifelong Warriors fan, you need to include the fact that Golden State had a trade set up in place with the Phoenix Suns to move the #7 pick to them ONLY if Stephen Curry wasn't still available. The Suns were convinced that they were getting Steph Curry on draft night, but Don Nelson was a key Curry supporter. So it really goes: Steph is a Warrior, or Steph is a Phoenix Sun, but either way Steph Curry doesn't make it to the #8 pick.

Good information. While Curry would make any team better, there's no guarantee that Knick fans would have seen titles with him. The Warriors have done a brilliant job of building a team around his talents, and drafting for chemistry and balance, with Green, Thompson so many different players coming in and out of that alignment over the last 8 years. Great leadership, coaching and of course Steph Curry's brilliant game, and team first mentality, combined to create one of the most successful runs in NBA history.

It’s always fun to think of what if… but a lot of the time what made someone who they were was the team AND situation they fell into. Many people who flaired out in the league could’ve been far more if they started elsewhere. Same for stars who were great. They could’ve been nothing if they were in a different system. Plus location and outside issues, which NY is full of. The list of possible reasons for success or failure is huge. We’ll never know for sure but it’s been obvious that NYK is usually a poor fit for most basketball players. Had Curry started there he probably would’ve never became what he did

Do you really think that Curry would have improved the Knicks fortunes? Management would likely have thrown him away following an ankle injury or failed to provide him with a point forward and fellow splash brother, both of which helped Steph move from outstanding to transcendent. The Knicks are neither strategic nor patient enough to know how to utilize an asset like Curry

really always feel bad for NY Knicks fans because of this, what's even worse was Mike D'Antoni was in favor of building an offense that focused on Curry's shooting which was way ahead of its time. IMO if the Knicks draft Curry Curry becomes a superstar much sooner then he did on the Warriors just because the Warriors during those first few years had to make a choice to either focus the team on Curry or Monte Ellis.

Warriors didn't "screw" Knicks. Knicks are forever screwed as long as Dolan is in charge. As a Mets fan, the Wilpons screwed that team for years, as long as the Wilpons owned them. Unless there's a Steve Cohen version for the Knicks, they'll be forever screwed. Also, Curry's career wouldn't have been the same with the Knicks. All NBA fans should be thankful for that. That's coming from a Knicks fan. It's reality.

Let’s be honest - Knicks never drafted well the last 10+ years, except for KP whom is a pretty good player but thinks he’s the unicorn. If Curry landed with the Knicks, he would’ve been traded away for Amir and or Melo or others. With the new ownership who focuses on players development, the Warriors has been making brilliant trades and drafted well. Curry has made his name not only by himself but also with Klay, Green, Jackson before Kerr arrived whom had even made the team better. Really hope Mark Jackson gets to coach again.
