Warrior Poet Society's BUG OUT BAG Theory is WRONG

John Lovell of Warrior Poet Society knows a lot about "warrior" topics, but he applies that perspective to the topic of building a bug out bag. Unfortunately, he's wrong about whether preppers should build a bug out bag or not. He advises against it, with some exceptions, and explains why he ditched his bug out bag. This, in my opinion, is bad advice that preppers should not follow. I explain why.

Bug out bag or get home bag is the gateway to being prepared. Warrior poets still carry a ruck sack., which is just another name for a bug out bag.

The main things in my bag, whatever one would label it focuses mainly on staying warm, dry, and hydrated.

Exactly. You need at least these basic human needs met in any emergency, big or small.

I think it never hurts to have one never know what can happen, and it gives you a small edge over not having anything at all

Well... planning for ALL possible scenarios ends with you on a fully functional, off-grid homestead, a 90lb INCH ruck, bunker, and up-armored BOV with a trailer with tons of extra tires, fuel, fuel preservatives, etc.... While I'd love all that, it's completely unrealistic and unattainable for most folks, especially today. Not to mention, as a disabled veteran, I ain't hauling around 90lb rucks anymore. Ain't F happening.... and I still do a lot of hiking up and down mountains. The way I approach it is meeting the very essential and basic human needs first you would need in any scenario.... then go from there but not by much to keep it realistic and mobile.

Ok a couple things.. 1st if your fleeing a localized disaster like a hurricane or a wildfire.. a bug out bag could help but lets face it.. it is localized so all you need is a couple bottles of water and your wallet.. the rest of the world is gonna sell you anything you need.. 2nd if your prepping for shtf as I am.. traveling even a mile will be a death sentence.. ANY bag you have will be a target on your back by the masses moving with no plans or supplies so it will be a bad thing to have.. even the concept of GREY MAN is ridiculous cause if your carrying anything your a target and if supplies have run out for weeks people will be EATING other people so the only thing you need is a knife and a gun.. in my humble opinion. A gun will protect you from carjacking during a local emergency, as well as anything that comes your way if shtf.. you can't say the same thing for anything you can put in a bag.. so while it is nice to spend money and have those things .. be aware of what is really going on around you. I started my prepared life many years ago and before I got on board with other peoples ideas and the latest fad gadgets.. I cut the power to my home for 7 days.. I did not leave nor did i spend a buck.. I literally sat there bored as heck and lived on what I already had to decide what I needed 1st.. and I strongly suggest that every prepper do this annually to find holes in your preps and in your thoughts.. when the world goes quiet your thoughts get loud and practice is free.. SO is information..

You make a lot of your own assumptions about John and what he said.

Like what? I felt like I followed his logic (and assumptions) quite closely?

@@survivedoomsday while it may not be apparent, I would lean into John's overall experience and perspective... it's not just a brute "warrior" mentality. Your average Ranger will have gone through quite a bit of training involving urban and waterborne operations, communications, navigation (beyond the norm), mountaineering, first aid, yada yada yada and that's just the basics before you get into the unconventional sorts. I don't know how many years he spent in, but basically he was prepping that entire time.

@@dirtygrease I understand, but I'm still not sure that even with all of that training one shouldn't have a bug out bag. Knowing when to advance, hold, and retreat are all parts of that type of training. "Retreat" in the world of prepping, usually involves a bug out bag as part of your total equipment, particularly when it needs to happen on short notice.
