    You have to understand the depth of the scene when the dad gets drunk. He is listening to Moby Dick. A book about a captain’s obsession with a white whale that goes on for years. Ahab ravages his crew on a seemingly endless vendetta. Like Captain Ahab’s crew, His father is unable to, “Stop the Ship!!” It Is symbolic of the devastation that has occurred within his own family and he is helpless to fix

    I've not gotten around to reading it (used to read a ton during middle school and previous. But I never read this, stuck to non fiction history books), but I have a beautiful copy I got from my old got available for when I move out and "retire" or a really rainy week. But I know the tale from my interest in sea lore, life and history especially Pre/Age of Sail. But we were dealing with my best (now ex best) friend and what we thought was his drinking problem when this was in theatre. Plus I was going through a really funky phase with liquor too. So this is the only time in my life I actually caught myself from my eyes welling up and starting to cry in public at a movie. Was with my brother, dad and our buddy. Credit for any movie that can illicit that kind of emotion from and audience member.

    man, I cried so much from this film. It reminded me of the relationship with my little brother, I grew up in a private school and later moved away while he attended a public school and stayed with my mother. We grew up differently and Tom Hardy's character reminded me of him so much, the resentment, the abandonment and later the hatred when i last saw him. In the end of the victory scene, I cried a lot because in the end..I love my little brother to death but will never understand what he had to go through to be where he is right now. I don't know where he is now, but I wish him the best and hopefully he knows that one day. This film gets an A+ from me.

    Tommy's best friend got killed in combat and he went AWOL. He saved the guys in the tank while he was on the run. He was torn apart inside but he wanted to help his best friend's family so he got into the championship. Brendan was torn too, and was about to lose everything so he finagled his way into the championship. Edgerton, Hardy, and Nolte's greatest roles at the same time. I hate that this movie flew under the radar like it did. Truly a masterpiece. It never gives you a moment to catch your breath and the reveals come at the perfect moments. Triumph of the human spirit. It's not about winning. It's about getting back up no matter what and trying to redeem your past...and your present. Tommy and Brendan are exactly the opposite, but at the same time they're exactly the same. Incredible movie. Great reaction, Devin.

Thanks for the reaction, and I'm glad you are an insightful person that can see the depth and details. Don't stop being you, don't hold back. If you need more good fighting movies, perhaps not as emotional as this one, consider the Undisputed franchise.

    This movie hit me so hard in so many ways. From the family dynamic, the way they grew up, my time in the service, the battles I had to fight when I got out. The part where Nick Nolte was drunk and screaming in his face, it could have just as easily been my father. And it's funny because when this film first came out I identified a lot more with Tommy, but fast forward to now, I'm married and have three kids ... I have so much respect for everything Brendan was trying to do for his family.

  • @tfly999
    @tfly9992 жыл бұрын

    You were right on the money with Brendan and Tommy's dad being drunk and physically abusive... Tommy makes that bitter remark about how hard it is to find a woman who can take a punch? Oof. It was miraculous that they had a relationship at all. Even their fighting styles reflected how they deal with the trauma. Tommy goes through it like a buzzsaw, like said in the movie, all attack and bludgeoning, which is all the more tragic since his father pushed him to be a great wrestler when he was in high school. Brendan's style instead is that grappling, ground-work, and deflection, evasion, and entrapping his opponents... using physics, hilariously enough, to work against them! Such a great movie, thank you, always happy to see someone new covering it. And don't be ashamed of those tears, this is a manly tears movie all the way.

One of the all time great American stories...it was uniquely written by NIck Cave the musician and Matt Bondurant (descendant of the original Bondurant brothers), but they managed to wrangle some great actors for the film, Tom Hardy, Guy Pierce, Shia LeBeouf, Jessica Chastain, Jason Clarke, Dane DeHaan and Gary friggin' Oldman as the legendary bootleggin' gangster Floyd Banner. I have brothers, both older and younger. And this movie makes me bawl like a baby everytime. I love my brothers to the ends of the universe. I would gladly give my life for them and I cannot imagine my life without them.

    I had such a similar reaction to this film. Growing up with an alcoholic father I know all to well the dysfunction and hardship that brings to the family. I had so much resentment toward my father for so long, forgiving him was the biggest weight lifted off my shoulders. Not going to lie, the first time I saw this I was holding back the tears. Such a great movie! Loved this reaction brother!

    Great pick Dev!!! This us such a great movie and hits REAL close to home for me 💔😢 I have an older brother who's a Marine, and we come from long lune of alcohol abuse ... they get the addiction and brother animosity soo right! 👊👊💪💪 Hardy, Edgerton and Nolte CRUSH their performances in this :)

    This is a great movie, but if there is one thing I wanted to see more than anything, is how Tommy would've matched up against Koba. That would have been an epic brawl.

    My wife and I went to see this in theaters when it came out. There was absolutely nothing good in the theaters at the time and this seemed like it would at least be something different from the norm. This is one of our favorite movies. I’m glad you enjoyed it. I love how you appreciate movies for what they are. Keep up the great work. Keep talking about your values. God bless you.
