Warren Buffett reveals his investment strategy for mastering the market

Warren Buffett is the godfather of modern-day investing. For nearly 50 years, Buffett has run Berkshire Hathaway, which owns over 60 companies, like Geico and Dairy Queen, plus minority stakes in Apple, Coca-Cola, and many others. His $82.5 billion fortune makes him the third richest person in the world. And he's vowed to give nearly all of it away. The Oracle of Omaha is here to talk about what shaped his investment strategy and how to master today's market.
I'm Andy Serwer. Welcome to a special edition of "Influencers" from Omaha, Nebraska. It's my pleasure to welcome Berkshire Hathaway CEO Warren Buffett. Warren, welcome.
WARREN BUFFETT: Thanks for coming.
ANDY SERWER: So let's start off and talk about the economy a little bit. And obviously, we've been on a good long run here.
WARREN BUFFETT: A very long run.
ANDY SERWER: And does that surprise you? And what would be the signs that you would look for to see that things were winding down?
WARREN BUFFETT: Well, I look at a lot of figures just in connection with our businesses. I like to get numbers. So I'm getting reports in weekly in some businesses, but that doesn't tell me what the economy's going to six months from now or three months from now. It tells me what's going on now with our businesses. And it really doesn't make any difference in what I do today in terms of buying stocks or buying businesses what those numbers tell me. They're interesting, but they're not guides to me.

The S&P 500 moved 8.9% higher in November, achieving one of its best monthly performances in history.. which is an indicator for profits to continue to improve. I just want my money to keep outgrowing the inflation rate. I'm still looking for companies to make additions to my $350K portfolio, to boost performance. Here for ideas...

I've remained in touch with a financial analyst since the start of my business. Amid today's dynamic market, the key difficulty is pinpointing the right time to buy or sell when dealing with trending stocks - a seemingly simple task but challenging in reality. Like Warren Buffet said, dividends are only good if the business you’re investing into can’t make good use of that capital. So if you’re trying to invest into businesses with actual growth, looking at dividends is a waste of time. Why are you investing into a company if they’re returning capital to you because they think you can make better use if it than they can. It’s not much different from bond investing. The way I see it if you have a $1 million at some point, that’d be enough to create a portfolio that would pay you between 50k-70k in dividend income...

Actually, it’s pretty easy if you have a solid risk management plan. Prior to perfecting my entry criteria, I had a 2% win rate on my trades 😂 laughably low. and yet I earned 115% return last year. Why? Because of risk management. Consequently, I achieved an upside leptokurtic, downside platykurtic, and positively skewed returns distribution, with what was essentially the worst entry criteria in the world lol. All because I managed risk very effectively. So, you can actually trade without knowing what the hell you are doing at all, just so long as you know when to exit that trade. These days my win rate is 98%, not least because I take far less trades. But in any case, my risk management is never strayed from, and as such investing, or moreso trading, is extremely easy and rewarding. … and yes, I do have a maths degree. But I would say that high school level maths is all you need.

Investors really need to take heed to what Warren said about diversification. Most investors do it for the sake of just diversifying. Maybe one or even two per sector, as long as there are the top one or two in that sector. Also remember too the market goes up and goes down, not by its own but by investors. If a stock falls it's because some investors decided to sell. If a stock rises, its because more investors caught on to a buying opportunity or increased their position.

To me, the issue comes from knowing what fields I can trust so much because unlike buffet, I simply don't have the ability to sit for 6 & more hours a day and inform myself. For me diversification is risk reduction strategy and its the best market approach . The more stocks you own, the less risky it gets, and more chance of gaining multibags.

Some companies you can keep for a very long time. APPL, NVDA, MSFT, GOOG, AMZN, etc now im looking into some Berkshire top hodlings like coca-cola ( KO ), Kraft Heinz (KHC) , American Express (AXP).. Owning shares from these various companies work together to reduce my risk of a permanent loss of capital and portfolio's overall volatility .
