    The map editor will give this game a longer lifespan than the previous titles as long as maps don’t break with every other game patch and the maps are automatically downloaded from the steam workshop when joining a server with a custom map. I would love to see a “vote for ranked pool” option on custom maps so eugen see’s custom maps that are voted for to be included in ranked games. Then people can focus on super balanced maps for this segment of the game.

    Yeah we have had a few chats about map making contests or something on WarYes, no idea if Eugen will be convinced of it. But plenty of games offer cash prizes for winners of map contests, Eugen get the rights to the maps to use them in the game and the creator gets some pennies. Hopefully they will consider that going forward.

    I was very happy to hear about the future plans with DLCs, updates & opening up mod-ability (if the community did 1/1000th with that in comparison with what's been done with modding in Arma 3, it would still be fantastic leap forward & a years-long playability life-resuscitator for the Eugen gaming experience). Truth be told, I'd put Warno aside during most of the early access period, continuing to play Wargame Red Dragon instead (which I know and love), since all the changes got confusing & felt "not ready yet"...but I was optimistic about tomorrow's "ready" status. That tomorrow is soon arriving! But that means, I'll have to learn the 1.0 version from scratch. Almost like a person who'd only played Red Dragon, and just bought the game, I'm probably in need of a fresh tutorial & some "trial by fire" experience. It seems they wanted to change WARNO so each division felt unique w/distinct balance of strengths & lackings, instead of "perfect deck quest" & "don't even think about attempting that nation" aspects like in Red Dragon. I like that direction for multiplayer, not sure how it might constrict or be mitigated in 1v1 & singleplayer though. Finally, I'm just glad somebody at Eugen is trying to figure out better matchmaking.

    You should have a reasonable transition, as long as you don't come in expecting everything to play exactly like WRD the overall gameplay/mechanics are similar in many ways. 1v1 with the divisions is an interesting arena, it makes for very cautious picks and bans and indeed counter picks in the tournaments. Though the balance has continued to shift significantly during early access.

    What I don’t like in the Campaign is that the German battalions are still in peace time configuration. In peace time a PzGren Battalion only has PzGren. Same for the Panzer battalion tanks only no infantry, but in war time they are “Verstärkt Vermindert“ (reenforced diminished). One Compagnie of the PzGren will be swapped out for a tank Compagnie and the other way around. So the PzGren have tank support and the tanks PzGren support.

    A very thoughtful video - I like how measured your approach is, you're seeing the whole picture as well as all the little details (good, bad and the ugly). I think you're right - the most potential comes from the editor (maps and units) and the absolutely massive army general campaigns are frankly unique - no other game dev even comes close to such a detailed and grand scale representation of cold war gone hot battles. I would really love some additional features to come in like: customising supply between fuel/ammo/hp, smarter AI tac/AG, changing plane altitude/speed like in BA, better UI (e.g. whether a unit has smoke launchers), more than 3 weapons per unit card and so on. These kinds of QoL or 'small' features really add so much to the game. Tools like the LoS tool and pre-deployment orders are why I can't go back to Wargame or SD2 personally, WARNO should pursue those truly modern features, the huge range of content that SD2/Wargame has will come with time :)

  • @Bandanner

    Firstly thanks :) glad you liked it. I agree and I think a lot of people would like to see more additional stuff, I am too still missing the options when it comes to the supply (aka Wargame style). I think the AI is just an ongoing project that they will keep updating as time goes on, its certainly getting more attention than it used to in Wargame. The team that work on it are without breaching NDA certainly taking an interest in feedback. Oh we need more weapons per unit card, when are my SAS getting their anti tank satchel charges, for back line stealth missions?!!?! Now I will just give the obligatory WRD fan opinion of all this QOL stuff is just a crutch, get some skills! :P

    The hard part with niche multiplayer focused strategy games like WARNO is that the die-hard community that plays the game a lot tends to push out any newcomers. WARNO and Wargame never did much to appeal to a singleplayer crowd and as a strategy game it's too niche for casual groups of friends to play (including my own).

  • @Bandanner

    @Bandanner

    Ай бұрын

    Yeah it's very much a niche market, not sure they will ever change that. Though the games do actually appeal a lot to single player gamers (don't worry its a common misconception that they are mostly multiplayer), around 80% of RTS players in general play single player only and Eugen have confirmed this is about the same in their games. Even prior to the release of Bruderkreig there were a lot of players just playing skirmish in WARNO, which is always quite a surprise.

Steel Division 2 though had the advantage that it was believable to have tanks miss each other or richochet more before dealing any penetrating blows. Warno on the other hand deals with tank guns that miss rarely and thus hit and penetrate very fast. Since time to kill was so quick the devs made it longer by making each penetration at medium to long ranges highly unlikely to be a kill and in fact likely to need many shots before a kill. The tank lives as long as a steel division tank but each time I see a saclos missile defeat a tanks armor and not kill it I am always disappointed. It just seems strange for the crew not to at least bail out.

    They need better tutorials missions, make game modes for beginners. I like watching the game, but I don't have the time or desire to learn a hyper complex game where you just suffer for 30 hours before being able to accomplish something. It's the reason Eugen games aren't that popular, they are about the hardest games to get into and not enjoyable until you get good, which may never happen when like me, you just throw it away like I did with Red Dragon when I started playing Total War instead. In Total War, you can make it extremely easy and take your time in the campaign, making it very forgiving and still enjoyable when you are a beginner.

  • @Bandanner

    @Bandanner

    I agree, while the tutorials are better in WARNO than they have perhaps had before it's still a very difficult game to get into for brand new players. And I wish they made more of an effort here. That said I don't think they would or should completely change the difficulty/complexity of the overall game as this is their niche of the market. But finding more ways to ease new people in would be beneficial.

    Agreed, for new players its just impossible to follow without shooting yourself all the time for the first 50hrs of the game at the very least. Mini campaigns (scenarios ?) with less units and smaller maps would already help a lot more. 30 units for each sides to take a city for example.

    @@Bandanner Yeah, you slowly introduce the player to more and more features through scripted missions. They dont need to do a lot really from a technical side, main issue is they need a lot of new players to gather feedback what need to be introduced in what order and how. @@Bandanner No, I don't want an simpler game, the charm of the realism / authenticity is there. It's just the learning part that needs to be better. I think the game design is great, it should just be easier to get into. As was mentioned, a game mode with a very small map, very few units that are introduced gradually would help. In Red Dragon at least, there was no easy scenario, they just threw the entire Soviet horde at you in a scenario where you are on the backfoot, then gave you an army mix of three different nations then told you good luck with that. If they make that, the game could go mainstream, as KZreadrs could casually start the game offline without too much hassle.
