I remember as a kid I was a friend's house but the friend got a ladder to try to do pull ups...right where that spring was. His dad's loud "FREEZE!!!" made us both jump and we did freeze and he firmly told his son to "get down and don't touch that. EVER!" And told us how stuff like that can tear off limbs in a millisecond. As kids this was a big O_O moment! Hehe.

I had a garage door install gig as a newbie in 2005 and wasn't confident with the way my colleague explained to me how the torsion spring worked.. and I wasn't confident with my own strength. I let the torsion spring slip and my natural instinct was to guard my face and it sliced up my arm near the elbow. A gnarly scar exists there now, and let's just say.. I felt a bit pressured, and should've listened to my gut. Great video bringing back some PTSD - in a jokingly scary way. But no seriously, good insightful video.

nick elias If someone let go, the bar would smash in the top panel. If your hand or fingers are anywhere near, not even Bruce Lee himself could dodge it. I've only done it once and I thought my hand was shattered at first. After about 30 minutes the numbing went away and it hurt like hell for a month. Nothing broken, but damn it hurt. Now if the set screw on the end cone gets ya, well you'll loose some skin and meat. Or I couldn't imagine what would happen if your sleave got tangled up in it.. now that would be a video.

I do everything myself. My neighbor owns a garage door company. I asked him for any useful tips. He refused to tell me and insisted on sending out his tech. Old guy that showed up had lots of gruesome stories about guys that worded in the business and knew what they were doing. Missing fingers, eyes, gouges out of cheeks, deformed chins, and death from spring or bar hitting head. That’s one home project I won’t mess with. I believe the springs on doors without electric openers are most dangerous bc they’re stretched and under tension vs being compressed.

I install garage doors and openers for a living. The red set screws mean DON’T TOUCH! That’s what I tell everyone. If it’s red, don’t touch it! I got my arm pinned between a torsion spring and top panel when I first started. The guy “training” me didn’t install it right. It was a low headroom installation and he had me wind the springs backwards and all kinds of stuff I didn’t know about. He said to hold the door down with one arm and pop the vicegrips off the shaft with the other. In a split second my arm got pinned between the panel and spring as it unwound. Still have marks from the spring wire scarred on my arm.

@@verb5066 the springs now are on a shaft. When they break they won’t damage your garage or vehicles. The old extension springs used to be on a cable and when they broke they would fly all over the garage. I saw them embedded in drywall. The springs now are just dangerous for someone that doesn’t know how dangerous they are and the homeowner tries to take tension off with a ratchet handle or screwdriver. Just call a professional if you don’t know what to do.

It is not rocket science, just think about what you are doing (make sure the winding bars are fully seated). I am 68 and I was timid about taking this on as a diy project but through several excellent youtube videos learned how to size the springs and place them properly. Once the mystery is gone the fear is gone. Oh, I wore my motorcycle helmet just in case....!

My garage door is only 7ft high. I put my door up as far back as I can after unhooking the electric opener, then turn the spring as tight as I can by hand which is not much. No pipe. Pull the door down waist high and see if it hovers but can be easily pushed up and then goes on it's own. The door going down winds the spring just like a window shade. I can't remember but I think a spring should hold the door neutral at around 40 inches off the ground. I only screw with it when the door is open. Open the door and give it 1/4 turn with a pipe and try again if too loose. I had a cable break un the extension spring type break when I was walking under it and this type is way safer than that.

I folded the top of the door due to springs to tight. Little hammer persuasion and its good as new. Tip 2, when you remove the cable to replace bottom rollers make sure you have the cable on the inside of the wall to rail mount. If not you will tighten the spring and go to test it, it will raise about 1 foot and stop lol Other than that went super well just need to replace the 2x6 that the at the top center where the lift is mounted. I just did it after watching your video. It surprised me how much force was in that spring. The only way I held on was by the screwdriver against the garage door. Yes I was stupid enough to use a screwdriver to hold when you said even a loose fitting pipe was dangerous. I just felt like I got away with something. serious injury could have easily occurred. I thought if I just kept my hands away from the spring, worse case scenario would be the demo you have shown. But I was naive to think I could fully predict worse case scenario when the tension was that high. Next time, I’ll never attempt anything with that much potential for serious injury. Maybe the only saving grace that doesn’t make me feel like a total moron was that this close call saved me from attempting more stupid and dangerous home repairs in the future. By the way I managed to fix my garage door by in the process. But I was scared shitless by what could have happened. I was sweating bullets literally even after the fact. Wow. After reading all these comments, I feel like I’m the biggest retard in the world for doing this repair . I fixed the door but at what cost? Nothing happened thank god but Damn. Shame on me. I think you should really preface and warn even more heavily with flashing bullhorn/lights in your video for people not to even touch the damn springs. I just got injured Thursday. The rack pulled off the wood mount on the wall. Simple fix. I put a chain to keep the torsion bar in place. Well unbeknownst to me the original installer used nails to hold a two four (not lag bolts) to the wall the torsion bar was mounted on, and the 2x4 split up and down flying to the left and right, releasing the 2 lags holding the torsion bar mount the moment I put the chain on. I was holding the chain pulled my left hand right up and the chain wrapped around my hand being crushed against the spring, the right bar broke on and fell, taking me off the stool. No way to release my hand other than use my right hand to right grabbing the bar mount and turning it. Got me left hand free then immediately lost control of the bar mount and cut 5 inch length across my wrist and curved up my palm. I've been much worse off. However, I feel I had no way to have expected that wood to just fail like that. I have yet to find an example of this type of accident occurring. Sharing this story for others to be prepared for this, even if rare (torsion mount/wood exploding in pieces).

I kept that i mind while trying to install new cables on the drum. I loosened one nut while holding the bar with vice grips, and the spring unwound to my surprise. Fortunately, I am fine. Garage Door Genius oh that’s great to know! Installing the new springs shouldn’t be hard, but removing the one 30+ year old spring, who knows

Have a good foothold on your ladder. Unwinding the springs, just focus on getting the bar in the hole. Holding tightly on the bar, ease it down and rest it against the top section. Repeat.. If the spring should break, it'll scare the crap out of you, but you'll be fine. 🙏

I know you use vise-grips on torsion rod when putting new springs on- but is it a good idea, to use vise-grips when loosening a torsion spring, for extra safety measures?

Not really. When that last set screw breaks free, vise grips are out of the equation. However, if you wanted to keep the cables in place instead of unraveling, then yes use vise grips.

well... Yesterday I discovered the wrong way that the wire on the sides are attached to the bottom last wheel. I unscrewed the bracket with the door closed, almost half the way of the last screw and I heard like a metal explosion. The wire snapped and put a whole in the drywall.

Sounds like a close call! 😱 I've had a customer before do the exact same thing and he lost half his nose.

Use proper winding bars, stay off to the side, don't go up any higher on the ladder than you need to, wear eye pro. Perhaps have a buddy that can semi-catch you if you do fall off the ladder.

Thanks for the video. Im curious, how does a professional do it safer than a DIY? Any special tools or equipment. Or they become good at it by doing it many times throughout their career?

We are trained heavily in the dangers of these springs and there is a tool that makes it safer to do called a surwinder they run about $1000. Beyond safety there are a large number of factors that come into play when replacing springs IPPT is critical and everything from drum size, radius, door weight etc. Effects the ippt required to properly lift your door.

I've been replacing my own springs since I helped my dad do it when I was 12. Not rocket science, just what used to be considered common sense. Not so common anymore. Oh, and just in case some of you were confused, that is not how you unload a spring. You use two bars and you unwind it a 1/4 turn at a time. Safely and slowly. Same way you wind up the new one after installation.

Definitely not rocket science. Common sense is a hard thing to grasp now a days. Btw..the title of the video goes with the way I unloaded the spring in the video. You're are correct, unload it 1/4 by 1/4.

Are these things preloaded with a lot of tension even when the door is in the up position? I guess they have to. It wouldn't work unloaded, if you think about it. The spring must be heavily preloaded and have a relatively weak spring constant so that its force doesn't vary much over the range of motion of the door, in order that it provides a consistent lift. Slightly more lift at the bottom but enough at the top so it stays up. What a stupid solution, though.
