Warning: The dangers of excessive PhD journal publications
This video discusses why publishing too many journal papers too soon may harm your career prospects as a PhD (Doctor of Philosophy, doctorate) student or junior faculty. It is more important to focus on quality of paper and journal rather than the number of papers.

Sadly, India has yet to overcome this number mania, which might be controlled by the funding agencies. It's quite easy to know someone's contribution in the paper, and subsequent redundant works as well. Mostly, one's publication lists contain publications very different than their own domain, which is an easy catch. In good universities, during a seven year long period, a PhD student publishes 1-2 first authored papers, and 3-4 co-authored ones. Many professors publish one or two papers every year, yet they get big funds, and some professors 8-10 papers, yet they struggle to get funding, leaving aside big grants.

Professors are often able to publish a lot as they have ma t students but PhD students should work on their thesis problem and publish. Otherwise they end up with a disparage publication list and low quality papers mar the high quality papers.

This problem is not just for India, but the whole academic world. I know someone who published in one paper in Black and white photos and published in another journal with the same content but color photos.

True. If one is publishing alone without students or a large lab then it is difficult to publish many papers. Also too many papers can raise the eyebrows of selection committees

Hello Dr. Ganguli, while being a PhD student, how does one know that they are going in the right direction? Also, how is the process of discovering something novel and publish? I am going for a PhD in Data Science in the USA and want to know what I am getting into. Thank you!
@Drganguli
Ай бұрын
The way the PhD degree is structured is that there is an advisor to guide your work. In most cases in US you will get a ready made problem from your advisor. You have to then figure out with his or her help how you are going to do the problem. Some papers are of course expected from a PhD student but the number depends on student, advisor, field and research problem. These videos may help. See the PhD and other playlists on my channel. @Drganguli

Marks can matter in the eyes of some faculty in the selection committee. But research and papers are often given more important. In fact marks at the bachelor and masters degree level may matter more as the faculty have to teach these courses. Is it possible to publish a paper without phD in India?
@Drganguli
Ай бұрын
Yes of course. Several masters degree students at IISc and IIT are able to write papers as part of their thesis work based on my direct knowledge. At many other institutes and universities this must also be happening but you need to check with students there to verify this. Many masters people at national Labs also write papers though often in conjunction with some PhD people.

Dear Dr. I am not agree with you. in academia people do not have the same capacity. some will always published more than others. Even among faculty members they do not have the same research output. In my university a full professor have published 30 journal articles lin high impact journals and graduated 6 PhD candidates last year. People are just jealous when you perform more than them. Finally, mediocer do not have place in Academia. Thank you

I agree with you about long term issues. I was talking about PhD studenta seeking jobs and assistant professors seeking promotions. Also Some fields like material science and chemistry are more fertile than say math. Journal quality may matter more than number of papers,
@Drganguli

Furthermore, I agree that quantity leads to quality but only in the long run. Also having many PhD students can certainly boost a professors paper count but for an individual researcher iit takes time to build a long paper record. @@Drganguli In your previous comment you mention quantity leads quality in the long run, so shall we focus more on quantity then? If that is what acdemia prioritizes!
@Drganguli
Ай бұрын
@@Musafir575 Academia never gives an easy or direct answer to a question. Quantity helps to produce papers of better quality over time as you learn the art through the review process and feedback. But low quality papers hurt a CV. So what people like is a decent number of papers in good journals in the field. This number of papers changes based on the discipline but look around at recently hired assistant professors in your area to get an idea as to what the decision makers are looking for
