Warning About Avis Car Rental-NIGHTMARE EXPERIENCE!! AVOID This Company!

We have rented with Avis in past years, without issue. However, they have become a very dishonest company, and have tried one dishonest thing after another, to get more money out of us.
After being completely shocked by what they have been trying to do, I decided to see if other customers are having this same nightmare experience. Their own Facebook page is FULL of stories much like ours, and their dishonest tactics. We are providing this video as a warning to others.

    Always appreciate your honest opinions. I believe as others have said, they can let those things slip by when Corporate because many times, no one checks they just pay it.

    Thank you for watching and for commenting. We merely want to save others the headache that we went through with this company. We had rented from them in the past, with no issues. But this time was a different story. And their Facebook page showed hundreds of other stories just like ours. We weren't going to let them get away with what they tried to do.

    So sorry y’all had such a horrible experience. I’ve never rented a car before. But, whenever any company doesn’t meet their agreement, etc..I will contact that local Better Business Bureau. So in the future should we need to rent a car, we certainly won’t use Avis.

    Derek, Really sorry you had to put up with that mess on your vacation. Prayers for Shawnicee that she gets better soon. We used Hertz rentals before and it went smooth. No problems at all.

    I think we used Hertz once, years ago. Truthfully, this is the first time we've ever had a problem with Avis. But lesson learned. And thank you for your prayers and well-wishes for Shawnasi. She is on the upswing. Today was the first time she's been out in several days.

    Sorry Shawnasi is feeling bad, I hope she gets better real soon. I don't blame you at all for putting out this video about Avis. This is a shame any company would try to pull this, I have read bad reviews on Avis before. If I am not mistaken I believe in some of your past videos you have mentioned y'all don't smoke. It seems like in one video in Florida I think it was, you ask for another room because of the smoke smell.

    That is true. I, perhaps due to my having had cancer, am very sensitive to the smell of it. I can tell if a room has been smoked it, or a vehicle. So, that is something we would never do. I agree, that it is a shame. I thought this was a reputable company. We never had trouble with them in the past, but it seems that they are doing this to a lot of their customers, after reading the numerous Facebook posts on their page.

    Geez, very sorry to hear about your Avis experience. Avis is the only company I've rented from the past few years. I have been treated well. I've also rented in the past from Enterprise AND Hertz. Never had a bad experience with those companies either. I do hold a Wizard corporate preferred membership. I have been seeing a LOT of bad press with Hertz the past year. So really watch out when renting from them also even though I haven't had any bad with them.

    I've only rented from Hertz a time or 2. I've never had a bad experience with them, and this is the first one I've had with Avis. But it's enough to make me go elsewhere. Check out the comments on their Facebook page. I'm not alone. The last time I looked, which has been a few months, they had 0 satisfied customers.

    that's one of the many reasons i don't fly or rent vehicles we drive our truck and pull our 5th wheel when we go no surprises thanks great video and we hope Shawnasi gets to feeling better soon Teresa is just now getting better

    Yeah, the first instance could have been avoided had the agent took a good look at their screen and see the mileage. Typically, when you book a one way rental with a corporate/work discount, you'll get limited mileage. It can give you some free miles and then you have to pay for what comes afterwards, or it will give you 0 miles and you pay for everything. The other two charges were Avis being greedy, I suppose.

    I would of never known this without the video and I went an looked on their Facebook and like you said it’s filled with unhappy customers . Yesterday or so Inside Edition on their KZread page posted a story about Hertz rental car that they allegedly had 3 customers put in jail for “ stealing their car “ the thing is These people had rented the car and was within their contract still. One man did a week in jail before he could get out . Another man said he did a year I don’t understand why it took them a year to figure it out they didn’t tell in their story why . I know the 3 customers are suing Hertz . Inside Edition said the confusion came when the people either extended the rental or traded the rental for another car . They said the information didn’t get sent so they reported the car stolen in each case. I’ve used Enterprise numerous times I have never had any problems and would recommend them off my experience .

    Yes, I literally didn't see one happy customer on their Facebook. Like you, I can't understand how someone is in jail for a year over that, but with these car rental companies, nothing surprises me.

    Derrick... I'm going to call a spade a spade... You're a MUCH better person than I (Lori) am. That was beyond ridiculous. But thank you so much for posting an honest review. We're about to have to post a negative review on the place we stayed at in Savannah. They did the same thing to us, but on a smaller scale. I"m so sorry y'all had to go through this. We absolutely hate to have give negative reviews but like y'all, when you have to, you have to. I dread publishing ours on Thursday but I can't in good conscience let anyone who watches our channel, stay where we stayed without knowing what they're getting into. We won't be staying there again, and we won't be renting from Avis in the future. Hope Shawnasi feels better! ❤

    I'll be looking for your review to post. Honestly, as much as we may hate to do this, perhaps reviews like this and the publicity, will cause these companies to think twice before they do people wrong. And if it saves anyone else the headache and aggravation, then it's worth it. Companies need to realize that, in the days of the internet like what we have now, they just can't get by with things like this.

    @@NCMemoryMakers exactly! And they’ll try! If you don’t question it, they’ve got your money. Ours was the same deal, too. After the trip was over and we got home, the charges started showing up. AFTER we’d paid in full before even getting there.

    That's a good idea. I wish I had done the same thing. I usually do take pictures and video of the outside of the car. I didn't this time. I hope they don't find something on it, and try to come back and claim it's our fault. But after this, I wouldn't put anything past this company.

We had an unexpected charge from budget when rented on a California trip it was $125 or something like that, I can’t remember what exactly the deal was but having not rented cars very much we just kind of assumed they always find some reason to jack the hill up and if I remember correctly the bill wasn’t very clear and easy to understand.

    She's getting better each day, but slowly. And yes, you definitely have to watch these companies nowadays. I think Budget and Avis are the same company now. Never had a problem in the past from either of them, but this has been a nightmare.

    Sorry to hear about your bad experience with Avis. So much work goes into planning a trip like this and then to have this negative experience that seems to be never ending. We believe in returning our rental cars in as good if not better condition than we get them. So I understand why you cleaned it and they should have thanked you instead of accusing you of smoking. David would have lost it when they said they were going to pay half of the bill. Not the way you want to spend your time after your vacation. Thanks for taking the time to share this with us. We are actually looking at car rentals now. We will know to avoid them. Thanks for the heads-up.

    This is a review that we honestly did not want to do. And I admit, that when I called about the smoking charge, I already had a chip on my shoulder because of the other 2 incidents, plus the nightmare that the entire process of booking with them, had been. Still, had he simply just removed the charge without telling me over and over that I had smoked, it would have been a peaceful exchange. But he had this idea, that since it had been put into their system, then that was the final word on it. But yeah, when that guy suggested that they would cut it in half, I did lose it. In a way that I don't normally like to. I just couldn't believe the gall, that they would suggest I should pay one red cent for something that I didn't even do. They have no idea how much cigarette smoke or even the smell of it, gets to me. When we cleaned that car the night before, we actually thought they'd be pleased that they were going to have minimal cleaning they would have to do to it. And when I started reading all of the other horror stories on their own Facebook page, I realized that they have so many things they like to try to do to squeeze extra money out of people, and they literally have nobody who comes away happy that they rented from them. At least none of the ones who took the time to put a review on their page.

    We rented two vans to take our church youth group to New Mexico for a Winter retreat. They did not tell us anything about being charged a cleaning fee when return the vans. We were in a little snow and a rain storm. There was lots of dirt in the area also so our vans had some dirt on the floors when we returned them. Before we returned them, we had removed all trash from both vans. Two weeks later we get a bill for $450 for damages, trash and cleaning. After calling them they say the damages we are charged for is the van being dirty. How is a van being dirty considered damaged ? Then on top of that how are you going to charge me $450 top vacuum the van. Also there was no trash in the van. Scam artist , they beat everyone's prices but get you with fake charges at the end

    I always had good luck with Alamo and one time with dollar. I have to admit my biggest stress about my upcoming traveling in the spring is the cost of the rental car. I am going to a beach and the last time I was there I found out about a service that will pick you up take you anywhere you want to go and they operate on Tips only. Even if I spent $200 in one week paying tips it’s still $350 cheaper than if I’m going to rent a car. Plus there is a private owner website where you can rent a vehicle off of a private owner I can’t remember the name of it. The airfare and my hotel are not the issue it’s the rental car and thank you for all of this information I watched this video with intensity and I will never ever rent from Avis.

    We had always had good experiences in the past with them, too. But something has changed. And as I pointed out in the video, you can check out their Facebook page and just read comments on any given post, and it is story after story after story, of other customers they have tried to rip off. We would never give a review like that about any company, except to warn others.

    This unfortunately mirrors my recent experience. It is still unresolved. I have been trying to get it resolved and I am getting no response. Frankly, this makes me feel a little better, not because either of us, any of us, should have to go through this, but because it helps me stay with it knowing this really is their way of doing business and not my fault.

    Unfortunately, so many people have had a nightmare experience with this company. If you go to their Facebook page and just read the comments, it is amazing how many people they mistreat.     The fact that they hope you will continue to use Avis is more proof that their claims were false. Why would they want customers who return dirty cars with the stench of cigarettes and unfilled gas tanks?

    I'm having a problem with some a"-:;hole there also. My travel agent had me pay for everything..air, hotel and rental before I left. Avis didn't put 6pm return and instead just put 6:00. After waiting an hour on hold Avis refused to fix their own error and said I would be charged 180.00 for 12 hours. I don't think so bub!

    I had a similar experience in El Paso International Airport, Avis is a miserable company that steals from its costumers. In our case our ID "The machine does not recognize the ids" we had to cancel and the process of getting our money back was a nightmare. we could never rent a car but luckily we got a friend that let us borrow one of his vehicles. I WISH THEM THE WORST! AVIS IS A THIEF COMPANY NEVER RENT FROM THEM EVER.

    You are correct. It is the sorriest, and most dishonest company I've ever done business with. And I was happy to put them on notice in front of everyone on KZread. If I can cost them business, then that's great. Until they change the way they treat customers, they deserve every bit of it. Ironically, we rented from El Paso, as well. Most of our troubles started once we got back, except for the unlimited mileage thing after the time of booking.

    THEY WOULD NOT RENT A CAR TO ME BECAUSE FOR SOME REASON THE LICENSE CHECK CAME UP RED. NO EXPLANATIONS AS TO WHY. I EVEN OFFERED TO PAY CASH. I WENT TO TALK TO THEIR SUPERVISOR. SAME PROBLEM. I AM 75 YEARS OLD, HAVE SPENT MOST OF MY LIFE WRITING HUMANITARISN PREVENTATIVE PROGRAMS, MOST RECENTLY FOR COVID 19 PREVENTION ANS REVERSAL WITH A NATURAL ANTIVIRAL COMPOUND MAGNESIUM CHLORIDE FLAKES FROM AMAZON. FINALLAY WENT TO DEPARTMENT OF MOTOR VEHICLES AND IT SHOWED THAT I HAVE AN EXCELLENT RECORD. GAVE ME PAPERS TO TAKE BACK TO AVIS. NIGHTMARE WITH ALL THIS COMPUTER TECHNOLOGY, CERTAINLY YOU CAN TELL PEOPLE WHY?

    I need to make a review of my AirBNB experience in NYC. It was truly awful and the host was a nightmare to deal with. It wasn't until she sent a message bribing me to remove my review that AirBNB cared one bit. This woman put loads of lies in the review she made of me in retaliation of the truth I said and had photos of. I am sticking to hotels from now on.

    Perhaps you should. I'm afraid, that the only way to put a stop to dishonest businesses, is to expose them publicly. I never wanted to have to do a review like this of any company. But Avis is as dishonest as they come.

    Absolutely HORRIBLE EXPERIENCE. RUDE! Were the front desk woman and the man who got the cars from the back. I was there exchanging a car I received from the airport that had faulty steering and faulty brakes. I filled up the gas tank of the car I was returning and burned whatever it took me to get to the Danbury office which was not much more than a gallon. They said I didn't bring the car back full so they would have to charge me for the extra gas. THEY CHARGED ME $70. Didn't know this until I received my final bill a week later. All the time I was at 58 Mill Plain Rd, Danbury the woman at the front desk and the man who got the cars from the back had a HORRIBLY RUDE attitude. The car they gave me as a replacement had faulty brakes and I had to exchange it again when I got to New York. All in all my rental experience with AVIS/BUDGET car rental was horrible but THE DANBURY LOCATION AT 58 Mill Plain Rd, Danbury CT was THE WORSE!

    They gave me rental with expired tags! My fault for not checking it but come on, there should have been a list of cars due for registration in their system.

    I agree. This company does so much wrong anymore, I don't know how they're in business. And it really is not your responsibility to make sure their vehicles are rentable.

    My experiences have been great with Avis. I never deal with customer service people, I tend to make my own reservations and go directly to the counter and speak with someone if I have questions...I will also ask for someone else if I'm not sure the person understands or give the energy of uncertainty..

    We never had a problem before now, and if you view their Facebook page, you will see that we are not alone. They are dirty and dishonest. We did make our own reservations, and going to the counter is not an option, when the fraudulent fees are tacked on after we have returned home, as I outlined in the video. They changed the terms we were given over the phone, and when that didn't work, they tried to add on charges once we had returned the car. Again, scour their Facebook page. There are hundreds of people they have done this to.

    The 'smoke' fee is outrageous. So is the fuel charge. The toll charge by transponder option is on by default according to what I've read & listed in the fine print. It is convenient but they need to be upfront explaining the tolls systems. All these charges are similar to shady airport hotels who try to charge you for a breakfast you didn't have.

    Yes, I agree that the toll charge is pretty standard, as other rental agencies do it as well. But I will say that every time I've ever requested that part to be refunded, they always do. I don't mind paying the toll, if I drive on the road. I just don't like to pay them to pay it for me. But yes, the smoke fee was the big one for me. Neither of us have ever been smokers. We don't even like to ride in a vehicle that has been smoked in. And I've rented enough vehicles in my time, to know to always bring it back full. We filled up a few miles from the airport, and they tried to claim it was 7/8 full.

    The only thing that isn't in the terms and conditions in your rental agreement contract is the details of the corporate discount.. and I'm sure that's not readily available to the employees of the company... most corporate discounts have rules and guidelines for their discount privileges... in my experience, if possible I never rent from airports locations unless absolutely necessary only because it's the most busiest location and they don't or will not spend the time and energy educating customers when it's already in writing....research and reading is key.... not excusing the bad behavior and lack of knowledge that the customer service reps displayed... but when you signed and received your copy of the contract..unlimited miles/mileage charge, toll fees, gas charges, etc is in print and could have easily been rectified before you left the counter or parking garage...I totally agree with you if you're not a smoker!!! But those that are and try to argue shut bring charged make it difficult for customers such as yourself and many others.... 😊 glad it work out in the end for y'all hate you had to have the experience.

    As far as the corporate discount, we made our reservation by phone, months before the rental date. We confirmed over the phone, that it was for unlimited mileage. If the lady on the phone wasn't sure about the corporate terms, then she should not have just made up an answer. She could have checked for us, but we can only assume when making the reservation by phone, that it is showing up on her computer as she is talking to us, as unlimited mileage. Why else would she say "That's correct", when I confirm that its unlimited mileage? There is no concept of the word "discount", that applies to this Corporate "discount". Had we gone with that, we would have been looking at a final cost of about $1,800+ dollars. That isn't a discount on any planet. And had I not been looking over the email confirmation and reading the terms a couple of weeks after the booking, I would not have caught the change of terms, to .45 cents per mile. And renting from an airport was our only option, as we were flying in on Christmas Day. We did not make our reservation AT the airport. We made it by phone, 4 months prior to arrival at the airport. That is why there is no excuse for being given false information, having to go back and forth with them for weeks, and only then finally getting a satisfactory resolution. The very first time we called them about the change in terms, they said they would go back and listen to the conversation where we made the booking, and if we were told unlimited mileage, then we would get that. Then, they failed to do so, and we would get someone different each time we followed up, who knew nothing about the previous conversations, and we had to explain the entire story to the new rep, each and every single time. It was only after all of this, that they offered the 3 free days for the inconvenience. And once we got back home after returning the car, that is when the other nonsense started. And when you say that we should have read the terms at the counter and rectified the issue before leaving, I think you did not properly understand what I said in the video. All of it was "rectified" before we ever arrived, because when they came back and offered us the free 3 days, I made sure the moment I got the email confirmation, that it WAS unlimited mileage this time. All that information is in the video. So, I think perhaps you have a misunderstanding of what transpired. The Unlimited Mileage debacle occurred at the FIRST booking, months before we arrived to pick up the car. After weeks of trying to get that resolved, they offered 3 free days, and when I accepted that, I immediately confirmed in the email, that we were getting unlimited mileage this time. This is still before our arrival to pick up the car. So, there was nothing to resolve at the counter. After our 8 day rental was complete, we returned the car and flew home. It was after we got home, that the other charges started showing up. I realize there are those that smoke, but we don't. And I resented their attempting to fraudulently charge me for that, when I paid money out of my own pocket to buy cleaner for the car, so that I could bring it back in better shape than when I got it. This is a dirty company, as attested to by hundreds of others who they have tried the same thing with. We are going to warn people about them, and hopefully, save those people the headache we went through.

    This happened to us also...They charge us an extra 200 and something. And extra 10.00 for gas. We fill the car up from across from the airport. We still haven't received our money back. Never again.

    Someone else on here, said the same thing about Hertz. About how people were arrested for stealing the cars, when they were still under the contract. We used them one time, but it's been years and years ago.

    With Avis, you can’t prepay with a corporate discount. The corporate discount gives you the prepaid rate without having to prepay. I’ve never had any issues with Avis, but everyone’s experiences differ.

    It was the lady who did the initial booking on the phone, that told us we were getting unlimited mileage, when we weren't. Apparently, you don't get that with the corporate "discount", either. Regardless, if you check out their Facebook page, you will see hundreds of other dissatisfied customers. At the time I made this video, there was not one person commenting, who had not had some sort of issue. Some of them even had the same issue we had.

    I used my GF card to pay which couldn’t be used so I used my own card but Avis took money from my girlfriend and me , I’ve tried for 5 months to get my/ her money back but they always make excuses, beware don’t use them

    They charge me $250 deposit fee to pickup the car ..after I return the car at 430 am ..5 days later charged against for $250 deposit fee .. Dispute with Bank ..Didn't pay Avis Rentals so off to collections .. Letters after letters about this deposit so .. I had to get a Police report / Card Fraud Case .. All this Headache to enjoy what I love to do is 🎶 Music 🤔

    Doesn't matter if they decided it's standard, or not. I'm not paying them to do something I can do myself. And they waived that part without an argument. Why would they have to pay people to tally up our toll count? This is basically done by the state where the toll road is at. It's no different than if we were driving our own vehicle, and the state simply mailed us the bill for that highway. I'm wondering if you watched the rest of the video. Is it also standard to fraudulently charge people $450 and claim they smoked? Is it standard to lie about the level of the gas tank? This is simply a dishonest company, and we'll never do business with them again. There are other companies that don't do that. And like I pointed out in the video, all you have to do is quickly visit their Facebook page to see that they've done this with hundreds of others.

    Regarding the gas charge Avis now has (especially by the airports) a sensor that picks up a reading from the gas tank when the car passes the gate or entrance

    We returned the car about 3 or 3:30 in the morning. Nobody was even there. Regardless of what they have, we filled the tank up just before returning it. It's just another deceitful way they try to do business. We weren't having it. Just like they tried to claim we smoked in the car…They're not doing that with us. But like I said in the video, we've rented cars for years. I know to bring the gas tank back full, and I know how expensive it is not to. I've never failed to do so one time. It's kind of funny that the first time I am told I didn't bring the gas tank back full, is also coincidentally the first time I've ever been accused of smoking in a vehicle. I'm noticing a pattern here. And when I read their Facebook page, I see the same pattern with hundreds of other people. No coincidence.

    Farmers mutual cheated my brother in 1972. No one in my family, extended family has insured with them since. That 100s of thousands of dollars lost, because of dishonest business practices. Probably 65 + people, in my Family alone.

    We actually had to forego the corporate discount, after finding out that we couldn't get unlimited mileage that way. That's what we initially had booked, and thought we were getting a good deal. When I realized in the email that they were trying to charge us .45 cents a mile, we canceled that reservation. We only went back with them, after they offered us 3 free days for all of the hassle. I wish we had just stayed away from them altogether now.

    It sounds like you car got confused with another car during the check in. Maybe the lot attendant confused your car with another car that was returned with a 7/8 tank of fuel and smoke smell.

    I threatened them with legal action. This company will do anything. I wish you had never rented from them to start with. Most everybody who does, has a bad experience. As long as you did nothing to cause the damage, I'd stand up to them.

    Why would we freeze our credit card, if we didn't know they were going to be doing those charges? Why would we even assume they're going to try to charge us for smoking, when we don't smoke? And in fact, they never did charge the card for that last smoking fee, because I threatened them with a lawsuit. They sent a letter saying they were going to. They never did. They only charged the card for the first two fees, which again, we did not know they were going to do.

    I've been Enterprise they were good I was able to get picked up a few times they were able to pickup to pickup my rental car the deposit matches up with Hertz this is in Wales United Kingdom 🇬🇧

    That is really terrible.! You should have been notified prior to that. That is the agent fault. For sure. -when you add a corporate rate you do save quite a bit. Most corporate rates are Unlimited mileage. - HOWEVER, when you go one way, MOST business will opt for a mileage charge. Rather than a ridiculous one way fee (for example it’s $500 one way fee from Houston to Denver) that’s on top of your quoted rate. Bottom line, You were misled and that’s awful. Also, MOST people prepay online. Some rentals Are prepay only and some are pay at counter!

    We never did fully understand why they wouldn't allow us to prepay on the phone, with the corporate rate. That is actually the reason we decided to call, rather than just do it online…To make sure that we were going to get the corporate rate, which we thought would come with unlimited mileage. And that is certainly what the lady on the phone told us. She simply said her system wouldn't let her do it, or something to that effect. But for some reason, we were not allowed to prepay with the corporate rate. It still makes no sense to me. Unless, it's because they had already planned to tack on all of those extras, and they knew they wouldn't get away with it on the phone. I don't know.

    I have not rented from them since this incident, and never plan to again. I would assume they are still bad, but the best way to find out, is to visit their Facebook page and read the comments under their posts. That will tell you if they have a high rate of customer satisfaction or dissatisfaction. When this review was made a year ago, there was not a single positive comment on their Facebook page...Not one. Perhaps that has changed. But I'd definitely read it before I followed through with the rental. And read your rental agreement in your email VERY CLOSELY, to make sure everything is what you agreed to.
