The Sart Kalmyks, residing in Issyk Kul Region of Kyrgyzstan, with an estimated population of around 12,000, they trace their ancestry back to the Ööled tribes. Belonging to the Mongolian ethnic group, the Kalmyks speak the Oirat language. Historical movements in the 17th century led to a portion of the Oirats relocating to European territory, forming the present-day republic of Kalmykia in Russia. Additionally, a smaller group of Kalmyks and other Mongolic people resided in relative isolation from the main Mongolic region in Xinjiang until the occurrence of the Dungan revolt, which forced them to migrate into the Russian Empire. This historical context adds complexity to the cultural and geographical dispersion of the Kalmyk people in Kyrgyzstan
Originally speaking Sart Kalmyk, a dialect of the Oirat language, the community has largely transitioned to using the Kyrgyz language over time. The Sart Kalmyks have experienced a prolonged coexistence with the Kyrgyz people, resulting in their assimilation into the Kyrgyz nation. Presently, they are often regarded as one of the Kyrgyz tribes, with a majority identifying themselves as Kyrgyz.
The Sart Kalmyks practice the Muslim faith, reflecting the religious diversity within the region. This historical and cultural amalgamation underscores the complex interplay between ethnic identities and the transformative impact of historical events on local communities.
