Warm February day on the BNSF/IAIS Chillicothe, IL w/ SD70ACes leading and more 02/18/17 (1/2)

The bizarre early summer in February continues and was a perfect day to go out on the BNSF Chillicothe sub. I picked Chillicothe since it is probably one of my favorites on the line plus the Iowa Interstate Peoria branch passes through nearby as well. Saturdays are usually a good day on the line and this was no exception. Trains of note include a SD70ACe leading a empty coal train (not that rare), a BNSF SD70ACe leading a high priority z-train (very rare), a couple brand new Tier 4 compliant Gevos in the 5500 numbering, a z-train with both a fakebonnet and H1 C44-9W in the consist and last but not least a eastbound taconite train led by 2 BNSF SD70ACes plus a Executive SD70MAC. This portion also features a northbound Iowa Interstate NSPEDM grain train led by a NS C44-9W and C40-8W. That was filmed by the old Rock Island depot about 1.5 miles away. I also witnessed a couple cars going around the gates one caught on video very idiotic especially on this line when trains can approach 70-75 mph. Enjoy and don't forget to comment or subscribe.

Your long westbound stack train was assume the one from Chicago Logistics Park to Los Angeles. It was definitely massive at 209 cars. I would like to see BNSF run 12,000 foot intermodal trains in one go. NS and CSXT are able to do that from videos I have seen. Why can't BNSF?

ABALLAM3 You are correct and I don't know why they don't do it more considering the distance from Chicago to LA

Well the whole Transcon is double-tracked so it would make sense to send 12,000 foot trains of everything, particularly high priority container trains. Their mixed freights between Texas and California are also pretty small and could be consolidated. It seems kind of silly to put five units on only a 90 car train. I have found it interesting that BNSF made headlines when they started running 10,000 to 12,000 foot trains on the Chicago-Los Angeles line, when other railroads, such as CN and CSXT were doing it already throughout their systems. In fact, CN, CP, CSXT, NS, and UP run more 10,000+ foot trains on their system that BNSF does and all of them are smaller than BNSF.

ABALLAM3 I see UP do it all the time whether it be the long manifests or the intermodals
