Warm Audio WA-1B or Heritage Audio Tubesessor???🤷🏻

Музыка

My opinion is based on how the compressors sound on Vocals, and how they compare to each other.

Vocal Chain Used For This Video:
UG-87 clone microphone, by my Friend Roman Rodriguez
Neve 1073spx (No EQ)
“Y” splitter on the output of the Neve,
into both compressors for a simultaneous signal,
So that I could bounce back-and-forth during live recording.
Output of compressors, into inputs 1 & 2 on my Apollo x4
Video and Audio Signal:
iPhone 12
iRigStream connected to headphone jack of my Apollo x4, which is connected to my iPhone to capture direct audio signal on the fly.
MHO…
WA1-B:
Sounds Warmer, sounds Thick, with a bit of sibilants. If you’re looking for that broadcast, podcast, thick-warm vocal with clarity. This is the Unit for you. I think it’ll be perfect for Hip-Hop, Rap, R&B, Pop, Reggaeton, and all vocalist. It’s the perfect budget hardware for its quality. The nice thing about the WA-1B, is that you have the advantage to swap out the tubes for a higher grade valve tube for a slight tonality change.
Pro’s- It’s Cheaper and sounds good.
Cons- It’s not a Tube Tech CL-1B. Get over it!

Tubesessor:
Sounds Thinner, Clear, more vocal Grit and Saturation. Has More features and options, and is well built. If you’re looking to achieve that Dirty, Gritty Rough Vocal Sound, then this unit would be great for you. I think it’ll be perfect for rock, heavy metal, Alternative Styles, Rap, screaming on a track style vocal, or any gritty vocal track. I had no luck with getting a signal out of the unit by swapping out the tubes. This unit uses a different type of tube then the WA-1B, and tube swap is not recommended according to Herritage Audio, especially 12AU7 & 12AX7 style tubes!
Pros- sounds good, It’s built solid!
Cons- it’s expensive and sounds nothing like a Tube Tech CL-1B.

I know I wasn’t going to get that 100% CL-1B sound out of these two units. Plus most of us home studio heads aren’t trying to break the bank for one. My purpose for this shootout was to compare both warm and herritage replicas, to help others understand the difference between the two, and especially for the price difference. I would have kept the Tubesessor, but that’s not the sound I want on my vocals. I can always add saturation or grit to vocals post processing. They are both great units!

It definitely sounds great, and sounded the same out the box before attempting tube swap. Myself and another KZreadr noticed that the Tubesessor has a bit more saturation that adds grit to the vocals, and that’s not what I’m looking for. I would have loved to kept the unit, as it provides more features, but it’s just not the sound I want. IMO I think classic mode should be an off switch, for those who don’t want saturation added. I do VO and have a hard time controlling the t's and s's when I do my work. I use some compression on my avalon 737, but its not enough to catch those pesky spikes unless I compress the heck out of it and I can't do that for the majority of my work. I’ve been making music since I was 12yrs old, so I know what I’m hearing. That left and right trick is something I developed on my own as a producer when sampling. Like I said, the unit sounds great but I’m not a fan of saturation. This video was only intended to help those who are having a hard time deciding which unit is best for them. I’m sure Warm Audio has it’s flaws, and I’m not a fan of cheap parts at all, but at the same time I’m not going to spend nearly $3,000 on a unit I’m not happy with because of the brand. Same goes for Golden Age’s GA-8000, which I think is a great sounding mic and would love to have. I had ordered Two of them and they both had the same problem, but I never posted that video. I rather spend an additional change to have someone modify it with the proper components to give it the sound it lacks on. Just stay Tuned… And Turn It Up A Notch! 🎚️🔈🔉🔊

Plus you can’t use tubes for the WA-1B on the Tubesessor. Heritage Audio’s Tubes are different type Valves. I’d be glad to test out a new unit from HA. It’s a great compressor, but not the sound I’m looking for.

The Heritage audio is over priced

After all these years with audio, you *still* haven't figured out how to use a scope? 🤦You could have sent a 1K sine wave through these and looked on the spectrum analyzer, and clearly showed us where the harmonics are so that everyone can see the saturation profiles clearly and exactly. And that would have been super easy to do. The first thing I said to myself when watching this video is "Give him a chance, maybe he's not another one of those guys". But you were yet another one of those guys who can't test anything.

First off I’m not one of those guys or a Vlogger. I don’t have time or patience to do fancy videos for your preference. You can clearly hear the difference and the saturation. Number one rule as a producer or engineer, is trust your ears not your eyes pal! I listen to music not watch music videos, you get my drift!
