As a German myself, i appreciate it to because he pronounces most Cards like i do, like you'd pronounce certain Names in German. Especially Cards that have German Names in them (Anje Falkenrath, Immerwolf, Somberwald, Ulrich, Krallenhorde etc.) all actual German Names Prost & Cheers from the Berchtesgadener Land in the Bavarian Alps

As someone who's a fan of both hobbies, and frequently views content on both, it's really surreal hearing my staple MTG content creators say words like Astartes lol

Szarekh is actually a really cool and important character in 40K, who does a lot of cool stuff including buffing everything around him. Most of the Necron legends are honestly disappointing from a flavor perspective. Trayzn the Infinite is a cool card, but his whole schtick in the lore is stealing stuff. And he doesn’t steal things.

I think it extends past the legends. The literal defining feature of 40k necrons is reanimation which could very well have been represented as persist but instead they opted to go with unearth? And it seems pretty random as to which creatures actually have it too.

@@Ragnaroktheend i think the reason they went with unearth instead of persist, is so it works with the self-mill theme. It also kind of makes sense of you think of it as them being awoken from their tombs, instead of reanimation in battle

I like that each of these episodes essentially either begins with a chat about climate or time zones. Also, Phil, I’m pretty hyped for Marneus as well, as another Lonis player.

I was listening to a Lot of This Week in Virology in 2020/2021 and they purposely have everyone start with the weather for them. It is a point of controversy for that podcast lol some love it some hate it

They did The Silent King so dirty. He's a legendary character in the lore and him having been this bad was very frustrating.

I am humored how Crim slammed The Golden Thrones artwork, considering its one of the most recognizable pieces of art within that fandom and the creator of this commander product specifically wanted a card for it due to how iconic it was.

Szarekh definitely reads like it was changed last minute, or they forgot to come back to it in design stage

If you look at the face commanders they are very straightforward for new to magic players while the spice are the legendary cards in the 99. I can’t say Szarehk is exciting but he does support what the decks wants to do and will probably be left alone by the table.

Reaver Titan can be good in Isshin. Guaranteed 10 dmg per opponent for that first attack and repeatable if it lives

Want to put it in a Shorikai deck when you can pilot it with 2 pilots

The price of these decks is rough. My local, stated they didn't know what the price may be if you didn't get all 4 in presale.

What's great about Ghyrson Starn, Kelemorph is that if you find some (almost any) equipment that gives him lifelink, the Three Autostubs ability basically means that while your opponents are taking 3 damage from manabarbs (and you're healing for two each time), you take one damage from manabarb effects, if they're not one-sided. It's pretty crazy.

The multiplayer lands should be printed to the ground. Every Precon should include all the in colour ones. I don't mind having a lot of basics, or having some of the worse lands, but there's no reason for these to be as expensive as they are.

The only good thing of the Silent King is that no one is going to kill it because it's so bad compared to the others, and will just fly under the radar.

That plus quietly flying and filling the yard and maybe getting card advantage is a definite sweet spot in casual commander. It just does the job and no one want to spend a card on killing it.

@@brushwagg7735 the problem is that if he doesn't hit something he can put into your hand, it's probably not stuff you want in your graveyard anyway. If he mills a swamp, biotransference, and arcane signet, how does that help you in any way?

@@leonjakobsen272 If you’re actually building around him there ways to get more value out of the yard and still keep a high number of hits for Szarek. Scrap trawler is nice. You could always juke em with the Yawgmoth’s Will and Ill-Gotten Gains if you have one.

@@brushwagg7735 if you're building the deck that way, do you even need his effect? Wouldn't it be better to use a commander like imotekh, who gives you a ton of tokens when you recur artifacts? Or a commander who is better at milling, like Sidisi?

Google search revealed: Autostub is a type pf weapon - an imperial snub revolver Thats why you can see him having 3 arms and using 3 guns ;)

In support of Atalan Jackal, I want to put this strait away into my Xenagos deck. It can come down as early as turn two, almost guaranteeing that Xenagos comes down on three. And when he does come down, the Jackal is a solid enough target for Xenagos' pump effect; usually the turn Xenagos is played, that's the end of your turn because there's no good targets. It may not be great at later turns, but neither are Elvish Mystic or Somberwald Sage. This doesn't replace Kodama's Reach, but runs along side in decks that that can support getting it to connect and who really really wants to ramp high asap. I've even started cutting four drops just because they've been hard to play on curve with all the focus on getting to five, and this card fits.

Agree with everything except the titan. It’s super hard to remove, difficult to block, and deals 25 damage to the table in a swing.

I think what makes these decks really good in terms of people wanting them is that it is the first time that a product (not set) FEELS like magic and will not be the most immersion breaking. And if it is, you could just keep them as their own thing, instead of having to use in universe cards as well.

Surprised Toxicrene didn't make the list to be honest. Fixes your mana, prevents taplands from entering tapped, prevents bouncelands from bouncing, etc. Feels like a great card to add into anything green and budget.

Crim shitting on the golden throne art piece is pretty heretical.

Considering the artwork has been reused so much in 40k I would agree. I hate that art but they should really just make new art

From a warhammer standpoint. The great unclean one, should have the ability, to give all your creatures wither or have it itself or infect. Would have been sooo fitting.

The Golden Throne art is not magic art, is literally out of 40k books 😂

40k is lowkey an awesome buff for the party theme with some really awesome warriors,which didn''t have as many great tools before Also Assault Intercessor is lowkey my favourite card of the entire set. sad you didn't mention it. i feel like we will see this one a lot in the future

Torbran does not work as well with Ghyrson. T makes all red pingers deal 3 instead of 1 as a replacement effect, so G won’t trigger…..it does make Tim ping for 5 though

If you have Marneus and Smothering Tithe in play and your opponent has more cards in their library and a consecrated Sphinx out, they can not pay the two for tithe and just kill you. Hilarious

Your opponent has to have twice as many cards in their library to survive but yeah, kinda similar to how notion thief kills you for your opponent's consecrated Sphinx,.

@@Ixidora i don't actually think you have to have twice as many, because sphinx is a may ability. P1 has a sphinx, p2 has marneus and tithe - sphinx triggers, p1 draws 2 cards -> tithe triggers twice - tithe trigger 1 -> marneus triggers -> p2 draws a card -> p1 says no to sphinx trigger - tithe trigger 2 -> marneus triggers -> p2 draws a card -> p1 says yes to sphinx trigger - repeat Each player draws 2 cards for each repetition. So in theory it could work. But because p2 is drawing their entire library, and creating a bunch of treasures, they will probably find a way to stop the loop before they deck-out

I need to rules lawyer here a thing: Squad is actually the creature version of Replicate. So, got that out of my system.

I wish these discussion episodes about the new cards would be longer. Also Ghyrson Starn with infect and manabarbs is bonkers.

Torbran doesn't work as well as you think it would with Ghyrson. Any damage from a red source would be increased by 2 from Torbran as a replacement effect, so you could never get the additional damage from Ghyrson. Your blue sources could get Ghyrson to trigger, sure, but that's only half of your deck if we're being generous

I was excited for Reaver Titan, was only card from this set I was definitely planning to add to my Shorikai vehicle deck. Yes Parhellion is better and will still be my main Anchor to Reality target 90% of the time but that is also one more mana, I think this is arguably the second strongest vehicle now though and a good backup option when Par isn’t in deck anymore.

Play with the precon a few times to get a feel for it before upgrading. I tend to be a bit spicy compared to my local game store, so it's helped me keep it under control

You guys got weird play groups. Whenever someone busts out some "oppressive" decks me and the rest of the 50ish people in my group just shut it down. I bet you $5 you won't tell your "group" to do it that way and see if it still wins

@@stayathomedad4830 That’s kinda the bad spot though. It a 5 mana commander so you either have to kit it out with the big money mana rocks or you’ll get blown out early by people getting spooked. Those early game archenemy scenarios where everyone dog piles someone only to get stomped by the deck they were ignoring are the worst.

Sister Repentia, in Teysa Karlov … with haunted crossroads, volrath’s stronghold, or Kami of restless shadows/dukhara scavenger, oooor if you could repeatably cast Dead reckoning oooooo you get to deal 5 damage when you put it on top oh boy!!! I love the miracle card :)

Regarding Atalan Jackal: I think the next stats episode should include some stats on blockers. For each player, what percentage of turns do they have a blocker? For the game as a whole, what percentage of turns do four, three, two, one or no players have blockers on the battlefield?

I'm super high on Assault Intercessor. 1BW for a 3/2 Astartes Warrior with First Strike and Menace. Whenever a creature an opponent controls dies, that player loses 2 life. In commander I want to wombo combo with this and play it and wrath the board to burn my opponents for a bunch of damage, But tbh, I'm mainly excited for this as an aggro/midrange three drop in my cube. Overall though, I think the decks are cool. There wasnt quite enough there for me to go buy one, but I did preorder a bunch of the ones I liked.

There’s really no excuse to not put the battlebond lands in because they’re not even that expensive

You really are underselling the jackal bicker, Seth is right. That boy is really good in green creature decks, in the early game it's ramp, in the lategame maybe it's not gonna connect, but u get all your creature synergy trigger, beast whisperer, great henge and it benefits from any pump effect while having two very relevant keywords. 100% better than most spell ramp options in aggro. The silent king not the only one of the most porminent characters in warhammer 40k, that is underwhelming at best, Also Mortarion, Daemon Primarch is supposed to be one of the most powerful entities in the universe, and it's painfuly bad

So on the one hand, the dual land choices always leave something to be desired. But these ones do at least have really interesting and unique artwork compared to the other 50 versions from every other precon. Also due to color imbalance between the 4 decks, how would they balance the Mono black deck manabase, adding things like Urborg? I'm super hyped to see Exotic Orchard get a reprint in foil given the price on the existing art hitting $60+ and I think a number of reprints chosen are super sweet. Crazy to think they skipped over Fellwar Stone again though. The lone foil is over $500 on Card Kingdom. WOTC have already announced they could reprint these cards in the future by printing MTG versions with a replaced creature type (alongside name and art etc) and then just saying anything that cares about X also cares about Tyranids. Super messy and complicated but I guess would get the job done.

Best part with the praetor is you can mutate on it if you have a mutate commander

At first I completely missed that szarek only let you pick from the cards that you milled. I thought it just let you pick any artifact creatures or vehicle card from your graveyard. Very sad when I found out you can whiff so easily

I'm really surprised not to find triumph of saint katherine on there. Probably the best card of all the Warhammer set. 2 Mana Miracle 5/5 with lifelink that gets shuffeled back into your top 6 cards. Card is so sweet it's probably viable in legacy and definitely viable in modern.

Szarekh is strictly a support card for Imotekh in MTG. He mills, which you want, then you can pull a card out of the graveyard, activating Imoekh's trigger. Also, 70% of the Necron cards are artifact creatures or vehicles so this is not a big restriction - you should almost always hit one when you mill three. That's their whole idea. Artifact creatures that come back over and over. So basically, this is not a recursion card. It is a card advantage card. It draws you a card in a very roundabout way, while activating the commander's trigger. It is one of the most clever designs of the whole deck in my book. Unfortunately, all that has little or nothing to do with the Warhammer Lore, where he is basically the most important Necron: He defeated the C'tan (gods) breaking them into shards (god fragments whose power they harness in various ways). When the Necrons went into their super-long hybernation, he exiled himself and then (silently) watched the galaxy in his world-sized ship until discovering a threat and beginning to awaken all the Necrons (who had been in stasis for millions of years). He's the guy behind the Necrons. This is where they get the bring back from the graveyard ability. Imotekh has numerous subordinate Necron Lords that would have fit the card design better - he is the leader of the most powerful Necron dynasty. In general, I think WoTC dropped the ball on necron FLAVOR. Some of the Legends - including this one - should be Indestructible. They should all have undying or persist (choose one and go with it for the creature type). Some should have flashback. The whole idea of Necrons is you basically can't kill them. Even when you do, they regenerate and come back. Over and over. They should all be buffed a little. The C'Taan should be god creatures types (and like the Titan you talked about should be WAY more powerful - they should be like the Eldrazi Legends). Unfortunately, all these things would have made the precon over-powered so they didn't so it.

I actually really like Szarekh's design. Yeah, he's not as impactful on his own but he supports the important gy mechanics without being too scary, he has evasion and is card advantage every once in a while (and I guess in this deck it's more often than not?). I really like it.

Reading ahead on the sagas would be heresy. :)

1:07:20 - "Even if you cheat this into play, what are you gonna do with this" Honestly, a 10/10 creature that can't be chump blocked by anything Mana cost 3 or less and immune to most good artifact removal is pretty alright imo, provided you can crew it ofc, I do wish it had trample though, if only because it'd be very thematic. I'm not saying its amazing but I see some potential in it doing work.

I actually think the Reaver Titan is pretty sweet. It can be hard to chump block, and even if somebody does, it's shooting each opponent for 5

i actually think indestructible is better than protection from everything. The former stops most boardwipe but not exile/targeted bounce, but both are less common than boardwipe. Also, it stops your own aura/target spell/equipment. Boardwipe will remove both the custodes and the commander. But, it is still a solid card.

Marneus goes infinite with the locust god, shame (or thankfully?) you can't easily play them together

28:13 I'm pretty Torbran does NOT synergize with Gyrson Starn because torbran says "instead" meaning whatever source does not do 1 damage it actually does 3 damage, not 1 plus 2.

PSA, do not play Vexilus Praetor in Voltron. The second it hits the battlefield, all auras and equipment will fall off your commander.

Any of my decks that run Ravenous Chupacabra are just going to run all three now.

Szarekh could've made more sense if they just add another line of text "Otherwise, create a 2/2 Black Necron Warrior token onto your battlefield", that would be quite flavorful and at least closer in power to the Sultai Sidisi

"Squad" is "Replicate" for creatures.

So Szarekh is bad, but I’d like to justify including it in the 99 of some decks. Self mill is actually pretty tough outside of blue, especially if you don’t get green either. Mindwrack Harpy is a card I’ve actually played in monoblack and black-white lists, and szarekh does the same without milling your opponents. I think if you kind of just ignore the recursion, it could be a roleplayer in some mono B reanimator list. If it required less black mana it would be pretty easy to reduce its cost and make it decent, but even as is it’s probably a C from me.

It doesn't actually give Flash to my knowledge. It's just that you're allowed to cast it for its Miracle cost, when you draw it, so long as it's the first card you've drawn that turn.

To answer Phil's question about what creature type would have been better for Necrons... Skeleton, which is actually what Rosewater said the necrons nearly were and would've given great support to one of Magic's historically worst tribes.

phil way beyond his time with the S rank on marneus

I think Knight Paladin should be on this list instead of Reaver Titan because of its blink value especially with Panharmonicon or Yarok dealing 8 damage to each opponent per blink is cracked!

I worry they won't reprint these cards, so with great FOMO I bought them all and will keep every card.

Commanders dont really work with your ranking system. Because s tier cant be play it in every deck because then all decks would be this commander.

Shadow in the Warp is S tier. The reduction applies each turn.

Vexilus praetor is terrible in any voltron deck that is targeting the commander. It prevents you from putting auras or equipment on it too.

The Chaos precon isn't just a copy-paste of the Maestro's precon. Its worse.

I really hope we get magic version reprints of these, with a magic frame. The calidus assassin, out of the tombs, necron death Mark, their are a lot of good till great cards in here, that I would love to play, but don't fit at all artwork wise.

Plus their are like tons of cool arts for evolving wilds. Why do we have only like 3 arts for terramorphic expanse and the 2of them are like super rare. 🤔 I mean cheap mana fixing but not fitting art. I upgraded my mana base for big part because I wanted fitting art. That's why I have now fetches and the old breeding pool. Plus some cool locking dual proxies.

The Reaver Titan is on the smaller of the titans, but I think it would've been better if they made it from 5 damage to each opponent to say 10 and increase crew from 4 to 5. And it would be a monster that you would have to fear.

Torbran doesn't work with the R/B pinger. He adds an additional 2 damage instead so the exactly 1 damage doesn't work.

You can stack your replacement effects, so that the Kelermorph adds 2 and then Torbran adds another 2, so it does work, though if you’re also playing blue pingers idk how good Torbran would be in the deck

Oddly it works with non-red sources. Prodigal Sorcerer deals 1 damage but he's blue so doesn't get replaced by Torbran, Kelermorph then deals an additional 2, which is increased to 4 by Torbran.

1:09:02 one of the biggest misses in mtg history is the godzilla secret lair and ikoria. They made a pokemon set and their secret lair stuff they released at the same time completely made all the flavor make no sense. Ikoria was never about Monsters. It was about pokemon companions, Trainers bonding with them, and your pokemon friend evolving. Mutate was always pokemon evolution.

I love the temples(nostalgia reasons), not the other terrible lands

Haunted crossroads is a repetable effect for sister but yea shes still bad.

I just realized that you can’t make infinite tokens with Marneus, because you’d draw out. So if you have infinite mana, you can activate it a lot, but you don’t have Craterhoof to secure the win.

@@sylverfyst I did think about that, but there are significantly easier ways to empty your deck than playing a 6-mana creature that’s telegraphed. *** If you want to ThOracle, it doesn’t really matter what you have as a Commander.

I'm curious about why everyone except Tomer gave Sceptre of Eternal Glory a D? Yeah, it only really works in a mono-colored deck, but isn't it basically a better version of both Thran Dynamo and Gilded Lotus in those decks? Are there really no mono-colored decks where you would run those cards?

Because the tokens are created on ETB, squad makes double tokens with double effects if you have a Panharmonicon out. Devastator is good, but y'all are sleeping on Sicarian Infiltrator.

Sister Repentia would be a lot better if it had menace and vigilance.

Szarekh, the Silent King is perfectly fine, I think y'all are far too used to broken must-kill Commander designs to appreciate a clean card. Remember, it is the face commander for the precon, for an unmodified off-the-shelf deck with a mediocre land base and middling card advantage. The face commander needs to "just work" to make a precon fun to play, and Szarekh "just works". It's an ok threat, it has ok card advantage (even if it misses). It doesn't need anything on the board to do its thing, and it doesn't demand immediate removal. Trazyn the Infinite, most of the time you cast it from the precon it can, idk... Mimic a Commander's Sphere? Great. Illuminator Szeras needs saccable artifacts on field and bombs in hand, preferrably for multiple turns (meaning, demands card advantage). These are terrible face commanders. The only other option as a face commander would be Imotekh the Stormlord, because it'll work with any Artifact Creature on your board - but again, comes with a failstate. With some frequency your opening hand makes it a 3/3 for 4 no text, or it'll get blown up before you can make tokens with it. While Szarekh is not thrilling to put into a self-made deck with no restrictions on card access or budget, yeah it's not great. That's why the precon comes with FOUR other Legendaries to build around :) It's a clean design, fits the deck, does its thing. Sidenote: not having Heraldic Banner in a creature-based monocolour deck is SUCH a miss.

Reprint is going to be a huge issue, they've sold this as a collectors product. I think prices on cards will sky-rocket.

Don't diss the Tarrasque, my Deck with him is the commander beats people down all the time

They always give you one "fun" commander as the face, meant for new players, then at least 1 commander that appeals to more veteran players

@@altromonte15 yeah, there's a ton of good face commanders. Atraxa is a face commander, so is prosper and a host of other great commanders. I'm not sure what the motivation is for deciding what commander is going to lead a deck tbh

Good to recover from what WotC is pulling today with a nice, relaxing CC podcast.

Disagree with the rating of Szarekh in the context of the precon but wouldn't change the rating by that much - he does great to fill the yard in a precon that definitely cares about having it filled.

@@leonjakobsen272 3 cards is pretty good for an attack trigger on an evasive creature - sets up for unearths and also fills the yard with stuff you can’t recur so that Canoptek Scarab Swarm can make use of it

@@leonjakobsen272 the mill may not be a large amount but it’s enough for what the deck wants to do - don’t get me wrong Imotekh is the better commander, but not out of the box

Play Sister Repentia in Teysa decks. Auto-include, even. I will pay 5 for a draw 4 gain 4 every time. I mean, I've played Liliana's Contract with no demons in my deck just for draw 4 lose 4 at 5 mana.

If only Vixilus was Legendary, it would have been sick with Dihada.
