Warhammer 40,000: 2nd Edition Campaign Battle Report BLOOD ANGELS VS ORKS

Welcome back to Armageddon!
It's time for the third and final mission from the Battle for Armageddon scenario set found in the 2nd Edition boxed game.
This classic scenario enabled players to use all the miniatures in the box - all four squads of Blood Angel Space Marines, forty grots, twenty Goffs and the legendary Ork dreadnought (don't worry, it's not a card one!).
We also decided to throw Captain Tycho and an Ork Warboss into the mix, just to keep things interesting!

    This was all the fun of the old editions, you could shoot at the enemy unit and accidentally destroy your own, the vehicle could explode from one minor penetration of the armor from a weapon that could not even penetrate a tank, by killing just one warlord you could make half of the opponent's army flee in panic and it was fun. Then the battles seemed more realistic: 1. Change of day and night. 2. The vehicle could break on rocky terrain. 3. The damaged vehicle could perform the function of shelter. 4. Realistic vehicle damage system. 5. Shelter could REALLY cover you from enemy fire (not that now in the ninth edition). 6. Flamethrowers passed through the walls and explosions could destroy an entire squad, which approached the realistic perception of weapons. 7. Warlords could fight fair duels. 8. Realistic system of giving orders, it was very funny when the commissar tried to give an order every time and the squad he commanded stupidly did not carry it out due to bad throws (I just imagined how it looked in real combat every time 😂). And in general it was really cool.😔

    I’d been looking forwards to this ..! Although I owned a copy of 2nd edition back in the day, for a variety of reasons, I never played a game - but this is how I always imagined games when reading through things like Codex Imperialis or battle reports in a friend’s issues of White Dwarf, and I love the little touches, like the Space Marines and the Orks being briefed by their respective commanders. I also - and please don’t take this the wrong way..! - like that your painting and modelling is both aspirational but achievable(-seeming..!) 🎵 Thundergitz is on the move, Thundergitz is loose… 🎶

    Man remember playing this battle when I first found 40k and was learning before I realised my true love, The Imperial Guard and 2nd Eds IG were disgusting with their preliminary barrages, off table fire support and mobile reserves of heavy armour. 4th Ed when they became The Guard and you could customise armies with Doctrines will always be my favourite, but 2nd Ed really captured what fighting a combined arms force of Guardsmen meant

  • @maddlarkin

    @maddlarkin

    @Minisodes 4th was my favourite, it was a straight update of 3rd integrating a lot of the OG City fight rules from into the base game. It was arguably the most balanced, but it had its issues, the reserve rules change from 3 wasn't great (basically rendered my drop troop army untenable) there was some tweaking needed with vehicles rules, such as the defence weapon strength being set to low, psykic powers like 3rd before it were relegated to a fancy type of shooting but for the most part it worked and flowed really well. I think though were 4th stands out was its codex's they all followed from the Guard codex's idea of customisation and really created varied diverse armies that rewarded conversion work (since to use most customisation they had to be depicted) and encouraged indivisldualised unique armies. Honestly for that reason alone every version since has felt really regressive to me as there wasn't really a meta to 4th, no 2 armies were totally alike and there was such wide level of customisation in the codexs fighting a specific race didn't mean you knew what you were getting into with Guard for eg you could face anything from a Mechanised Infantry to hordes of conscripts to highly elite carapace specialists clad drop troops with 4WS. It's why I still use the 4th Ed codex as a base for making an army. Sorry gone on a bit, I really miss 4th's freedom and tend to go on a bit 😀

    @@edpaintsminis Totally agree! Essentially what my brother and I did once we got the box home (we had bought it while on vacation). For my brother it was trading up to the metal Ork Dreadnought just like you did, Ghazghkull Thraka himself, and a Warbuggy with the Multi-melta. I actually gave my Space Marines to my friend who wanted to start Space Wolves, while I went full Eldar. My friend and I were barely teenagers but had jobs so we had the income to start new armies (at least in early 1990s prices). My younger brother didn't have that luxury, so between his allowance and a very loving big brother (lol) was how he kept up with the arms race so to speak.

    I love these battle reports!! It doesn’t get better than this indeed ❤ On another note: with that luck, I think you need a new set of dice 😂

    Hahah! Yes... I think maybe Ghaz sent Thundergit out first to put any ambitions this Badmoon had to rest. Permanently.

    Idk if you knew this at the time of recording but the +5 is the "strategy rating" for every army. marines are weirdly higher than Eldar at a 5 to a 4. Orks are a 3, however they do double that number when adding to their dice for who goes first. So marines are D6+5 and orks are D6+6. If marines rolled a 5 and orks a 4 as in the video, the numbers would be 10 v 10. However because marines had a natively higher strategy rating, they would go first

    Thanks for the comment - this mission was pre Ork Codex, so we just used the rules from the scenario briefing in the pamphlet :)

    Ehhhhh, 2nd edition had problems. The rule book literally mentioned that for some of the rules the game makers didn't even know what or how they worked. There were horrifically designed weapons, and vehicle movement actually involved mathematical equations in some circumstances. In terms of the design though, it was a solid fun game, with vehicle damage being my favorite part. 3rd edition was basically a blank slate and first release 3rd is probably the most balanced 40k has ever been, everyone used everything (just named differently). 2nd edition was more or less a colection and condensation of 1st editions rules that were scattered through tens of magazine issues.
