2:20 on the right wall is one of the first Warframe/Dark Sector posters. Not the Dark Sector that was released in 2008, but the one that was originally planned to be set in space with enemy spaceship expeditions, which eventually became the Warframe we all know.

Always love the darker, morbid and bizarre tones of this game. Very damn happy that they havent gotten less over the years. Part of why i always come back

FYI the audio for that countdown and happy new year were recorded at Tennocon from the audio design panel earlier that same day. They had the whole audience participate in recording it. I absolutely love when companies do that

It’s honestly surreal seeing warframe gameplay take place in such a grounded, urban setting. At least in comparison to everything we’ve seen in warframe before this. Curious if this is on earth or another location, because we’ll get to see what earth was like before it was ravished if it is.

Can't believe so much has changed just because of the human face and the visual is just absolutely amazing.

I’ve always wondered how we got to the point of warframe. It’s so far in the future it’s hard to wonder how their “modern times” were, so I’m glad we get so see it. It almost grounds the universe and It’s easier to relate with something we can easily conceptualize and see we’re in the timeline things went off.

I just found out that the countdown and Happy New Year was the countdown that Reb had the audience do earlier in the same livestream. The fact that the sound team were able to work in the crowd's countdown with so little time is astonishing to me

IIRC the recording was taken during the Sounds of the System panel, so the team did have at least an hour and a half to integrate it. Technically closer to two and a half due to the Soulframe showcase and intermissions, but it was implied pretty heavily that they could have done the two demos in either order so I'm going to assume they had it done by Tennolive's start.

What i appreciate the most about Warframe is it's ability to reinvent itself and try new things. I don't play anymore, but seeing it still be somewhat relevant is crazy.

Duviri literally made me quit Warframe and I only saw this trailer because I was wondering what they'd been up to in the time since (from what I've heard of the update it's not worth a reinstall).

At 5:10 I think the Voidtongue is saying, "YOUR TURN."

So this looks like it might explain how Warframe could directly connect to the Dark Sector universe, very excited for next year.

Yeah, that's what makes this reveal so _utterly insane._ Warframe was always a game set so far in the future that, aside from the names of the planets in the solar map, it might as well be taking place in an entirely made-up universe. Even Warhammer 40k has more connection to what we know as our present day than Warframe does, and THAT setting's name speaks for it. To suddenly connect Warframe to the present day setting (even if it is 23 years ago) is like if a spaceship full of aliens suddenly crashed into the middle of Lord of the Rings.

Same thing back in Beta in 2013 with Paris and Dual Zorens and it was the first time I had gameplay match up to the rhythm of the combat in any game so seemlessly, and one of the things that made me fall in love with this game.

Based on the notes scribbled on the walls in the netracells in Albrechts labs, we can assume he brought the means of turning Arthur into this half-excalibur form with him to the past, so while he technically is the first excal chronologically, he’s far from the “first prototype” or whatever. Time travel is confusing.

Notice how every time he uses an excel ability he like almost passes out or it takes a huge toll on him.

So the Void, atemporal. Wally and Al screwed up the past as well. With the Orokin arising as a bootstrap paradox. The Orokin birth Albrecht, who discovers the Void, who goes backs and starts the rise of the Orokin. A circle with no beginning and no end, but Operators also atemporal. Their actions operating outside the paradox in a paradoxical existence of their own.

When I see this guy's face, I think of wheel chair Jet Stream Sam.

For those confused about the significance of 1999 and why we're in a timeline set just before year 2000, this was the same time when Y2K was a cause of concern for everyone. This was centred around an issue within computers at the time that could've caused widespread problems when the year turns 2000 especially in computer reliant industries. The public became aware of the issue and that caused widespread panic believing that Y2K was going to be apocalyptic in scale. This is why the enemies are humanoid Infested masses made of TV screens (you can even see Infested growth in some parts of the environment in this video), it's based on the idea of Y2K turning out to be an apocalyptic event with "Master Entrati" (I put that in quotations because it's fairly obvious that it's Wally and Albrecht was right in his fear that his "other" escaped) having something to do with it.

Very Metal Gear good to see them going back to the roots of the franchise never played dark sector but I heard good things and its always good to see a creative team execute on their original vision or at least refrence it.

lol i have a lot of years playing warframe, in the begining it was no lore, so minimal, it was just kill everything, with a few warframes, and a braton with potato, the game it just get better year by year, especially the lore, the know how to catch u with little pieces, bit a bit, warframe its an adventure, u dont know where they going to, and thats great!

A few things I've noticed. Arthur and Excalibur share the same story they are based on (heck king arthur wields excalibur) not to mention Arthur use's Radial Blind. You can even see the lotus symbol peeking out from under his shoulder straps. Theres a mural on the floor of the Sun and Moon, a very common theme in warframe. While arthur is on the phone with Aoi, you can hear her using Mag's abilities (which could me me presuming it her using them and not someone else) The monitors bear the symbol of the Lidless eye, which is another name for the Indifference and the Man in The Wall The screens say Solar Winds, Silverball, Pariah, and Warpath which are all DE games DE picked the song from Nine Inch Nails and it has a fitting name of "Into the Void" which is super fitting Now what I wanna know is how much time actually passes between the two. According to the game, the Helminth strain was developed during the old war, and we didnt see warframes until much later. But we do see infestation, similar to the Mutualist strain given it taking over electronics and assimilating them, but we also take a look at Arthur's back and we see evidence of either sword metal or some kind of biomechanics going on which either or leads me to believe theres some proto-orokin organization that Dr. Entrati is a part of. My guess, Arthur and Aoi are genetically engineered super-soldier type who serve the organization (which I believe to be the origins of the orokin) and the two of them are bodyguards (kinda like proto-dax, mirroring Excalibur umbra). Dr. Entrati was most likely influenced by the Man in the wall to further his research, develop the infestation, and is is the reason for the outbreak but also for the orokin (the wealthy execs) fleeing to Lua and eventually becoming the orokin cult race. Also, lately I've been thinking of the grineer, corpus, infestation, and ostron as one race (humans) diverged down multipler paths. Questions I have? If there was an outbreak on earth, how did they get earth to the way it is? Is it even the same earth? Is it even the same solar system? Or just something close enough. I know theres mentions of infestation outbreaks with the orokin and they sealed them in Dark Sectors (ooo a call back) which leads me to think they flat out found a new system, which kinda kills my theory of ostron and orokin sharing a common ancestor. I got alot of reading to do as I still barely know anything about the lore I heard someone say that DE used the countdown from tennocon as the new years count down not even a few hours later, which if true is super cool!

It was mentioned in multiple quests that Earth got really really really fucked and Silvana (Silver grove creator) was effectively one of the scientists in Earth reclamation process. Earth's terrain does look very wonky so the theory that Infestation did overrun Earth at one point but got purged (somehow) would not be out of question. That begs the question how the fuck does Eris and Mercury look like on the surface, if Eris used to be an active warzone before it got completely infested

You know the plants on earth were made by the infestation before it went haywire trying to remake all the animals, that the orokin made extinct, yes the big trees on earth are all technically infestation, just the intended way, you can see version of it starting to go haywire, in derelicts as the blue trees that are everywhere.

the problem is the tons of years betwen this "past" and the orokin empire... the man in the wall it was clearly unknow by the orokins, eldritch just fear he, and the tenno, well we dont know the really history we only have a few pieces, we know that the tenno get his powers because the void, and the man in the wall comes from there or is the void manifestation itself, in some way the void just try to manipulates the reality to invade or dominate or pass through to the systems, in the other hand, in the lore orokins create the tennocyte, and the warframe process itself, and ballas warframes, the orokins are very humanoids but a bit different, the skins tones, the anatomy with that arm, i dont know looks like a millions years of distance of the humanity right now, but warframe has this platonic world where the mind is like something different or isolate from the body, so it can be a manifestation of that a mind... i think in fact duviri is a manifestation from the drifter, cause i was thinking, u know, the drifter get the worse of the void (in some way) that dont give him any hability, but i think drifter have powers just he dont use directly like operator, maybe this can be a manifestation of the void, playing with the memories of humanity, dont know... but it looks good!

As a new player this games story is all over the place.

As soon as the head came alive and I heard the song, I said "wait, is that Nine Inch Nails"? Then the main part hit and I flipped out so hard I almost smashed my laptop. It went perfectly with the scene and as a huge NIN fan, I love that you used this. Great choice!!!!!

I've got a sneaking suspicion Arthur is going to end up being transformed into the very first warframe. What with Excalibur being the first one in the lore it would make sense for a 1999 look-a-like to end up as the first one, or at least as the basis for the first Excalibur.

Man, I love how they mixed that Happy new years cheer in there from the costume contest earlier. Wasn't expecting to hear it in game until like a year from now after everyone forgot, not later the same day as part of a new trailer.

Do you guys think Arthur will be a warframe or more like the drifter/operator? Or maybe a mission specific character like Kahl?

Probably a quest tileset, maybe a few Kahl mission type things, maybe reskins for frames, or an umbra type deals (though it'll be messed up to just be controlling A Whole Guy)

Since i started playing Warframe, i noticed how amazing sound design and music are. Now they even got NIN to contribute a Song.

​​@@ZzVinniezZit's not canon, that was confirmed years past in a devstream that they wouldn't attempt to make ties in Warframe with Dark Sector. You could see 1999 as a spiritual successor to Dark Sector in concept, adapting it to Warframe instead of the reverse. The Proto, Nemesis and Vintek skins are just that: skins. Though I do wonder if any unique shoutout is going to be made if you play the quest while using that skin, maybe "Arthur" will wear the proto armour or is renamed to "Hayden" for as long as the skin is equipped. We'll have to see for ourselves in 300some days.

​@RyuDouro While it may seem like Warframe can continue on an unchanging path, it honestly cannot. DE needs to make variety, otherwise they'd probably drop the game entirely. You can only do so many things in the star chart 'til it starts to get boring. Burnout is the bane of players & devs alike.

DE is not a small studio they are on top of the f2p market and thus want to expand and make Warframe a whole franchise with the addition of Soulframe and the more expansive and complex story telling. While the original 2013 Warframe is almost non-existent anymore I would 100% bet that the game would've been damned to obscurity, if it would've stayed exactly the same. And let's be fair. Also: Considering that Dark Sector is the original prototype version of Warframe, the 1999 is probably the closest they could come to the original vision of warframe.

It’s quite possible that they may make a skin for Excalibur that makes him look just like Arthur (if this is not something that we can choose due to story such as operator and drifter etc). Or, perhaps they will at least have the body as a skin for Excal. It would be interesting to have it be story based where we can revert the looks of our warframes based on the first “prototypes” or characters such as Arthur or even Aoi (as someone said they picked up mag ability noises being used in the background). However, this will only be possible if it takes place in the same universe. We don’t know if 1999 is backstory or it’s own universe due to Eternalism in Warframe.

Right? I've not been in my Orbiter for a couple of years, but saw this a few months ago and me loving Warframe and being a life long fan of Nine Inch Nails got me itching to go back. I didn't cause I was playing through some other stuff, but then I saw Cross Save is a thing now and finally returned.

Right now I'm convinced that they're trying to connect Dark Sector to the Warframe universe. Specifically by explaining that the frame designs all came from real people or at least their equipment. For those who played Sacrifice, we already know how much actual people were involved in the process; I think this would fit perfect together.

Probably not, this is not the dark sector universe, that one played in more or less the real world. This seems to be more of like the past of the warframe universe timeline. Also this is not Hayden Tenno, the character is called Arthur.

Amazing that the track is from NIN's 1999 album, The Fragile. The meta goes deep.
