    Totally! I honestly agree. I think the Green Beret and ET10 brought some cool textures, specifically in the dirty tones, but I was impressed with the pairing of the stock speaker. Turns out it was well-matched to this amp.

    The metal cage is fitted for the amp to be compliant with CE and UKCA. Hot tubes are classified as a hazard also, direct access to the tube sockets, if amp is on, is also a hazard with the user potentially being exposed to lethal high voltage. That is why nearly all amp manufacturers are having to provide some physical protection around tubes now.

    @@AmbientEndeavors It reinforces that swapping the Ten 30 is a great idea. 🤣 I actually was leaning toward the ET10, but I'm a little surprised at how boxy it sounds compared to the other two IMO. I was inbetween the WGS ET10 and the Jupiter 10SC, but the Green Beret was my favorite of these, so that may have to be the one to consider against the Jupiter.

    And yet there're still people who believe a speaker is a speaker is a speaker. When we were kids we'd find the rattiest stereo speakers we could find at the pawn shop down the street and put them in our ratty old amps, just to see what it would take to blow one out, lol. Got a lot of great tones out of a few of them before they died. Great comparisons!

    That's kind of where I arrived too, to be honest. I'm leaning Green Beret after the whole experiment, mainly because I like the driven tones a bit better. More full/rich breakup. And the cleans are close, but there is a nice texture to the GB that adds something interesting to both clean and dirty.

    The most important part of any rig is the least considered part… the speaker. I know most of us, myself included, find it more fun to try new amps, pedals and guitars, but changing the speaker will get you the most drastic results.

    Each speaker was drastically different to my ears. I liked the stock speaker the best.. but with that said the WGS speakers sound new/stiff/unbroken-in.. I think all the speakers will sound even better once their very nicely broken in and smooth out a bit… Also, I wonder how different combinations of those speakers would sound in a 2x12 cab?

    Great video. Your playing is wonderful. To my ears the AlNiCo speaker sounds more musical and exciting than the two WGS ceramics. The tone is sweeter and your playing sounded more dynamic, almost like a blanket had been taken off the amp. By far my favorite. The stock Celestion sounded pretty good to me, and I like it better than the two WGS ceramics. Maybe not surprisingly I put a WGS AlNiCo 8" in my 64 Vibro Champ and it sounds superb.

    G10A all the way!! Actually, after I listened to the comparison few times have to say that my favorites on the clean are the celestion and the g10a followed by the green and et10 last. Overdriven green first, then g10a, then et10 and celestion last. Thinking about possibilities setting the eq to each speaker to taste, I would probably take the green because I liked the character of the low end and I believe you can dial the bass knob higher and get more punchy low end without been flabby (cleans would’ve sound better to me with bass knob higher than where it was), the mids were the most beautiful to my taste and the top end is sweet. Thinking about proper speaker to match the amp I would take the g10a. The celestion sounds very good but the low end felt kind of too loose to my liking on the overdriven sound. I guess that the et10 can sound way better with the amp eq different (more bass, more treble).

  • @AmbientEndeavors

    all really good observations! The G10A feels polarizing to me, and it's the most unique to my ears. It has a bit of that honky vintage Fender feel (that likely suits these old amps well, but that I personally don't love). The GB was the one for me, mainly because I liked the way it broke up the best, and it retained a good amount of the sparkle/clarity in the cleans as well. You're right, a lot of it can be affected by some EQ knob turns too. Thanks for watching!

    All the WGS speakers sounded like they needed a few hours of playing to loosen up the surrounds and spiders. I've learned never to judge a speaker until it's at least partly broken in so it can reveal its true voice. With that said, the G10A really tickled my ears. Its detail and depth out of the box hinted that it would sound amazing once it had broken in. Nice playing, BTW!

    I use one of these amps, absolutely love it. I want to use it in a live setting with a drummer, and think I need a bit more volume/headroom... would a speaker swap help for this? Alternatively, do you think using a vibro champ to drive an external cabinet e.g. 2x10 would do the job? Not looking for clean headroom. Thanks

  • @AmbientEndeavors

    @AmbientEndeavors

    great question. I found the green beret to be the best for breakup. there wasn't a big difference in overall volume among the three, and maybe a subtle bump in volume from the stock speaker. regarding running through an external cab, yes you'd likely hear a significant volume bump running through more or bigger speakers. I run a vintage champ through a 12" combo cabinet and it sounds huge and much louder than the stock 8".

    Clean there's no much of a difference, as usual, but i will describe how they sounded (to me, at least): The Celestion Ten 30: Quite tiny and lacking in body/depth, also it has a little bit of fizziness that i didn't like, but at least, the mids didn't sounded boxy or unbalanced. The WGS ET10: An improvement over the Celestion, full bodied response and no fizz, also, quite hi-fi. The WGS Green Beret: Very similar to the ET10 in general, maybe a little bit more hi-fi. The WGS G10A: Full bodied response, but with a quite annoying fizziness, typical of AlNiCo speakers.

I think it would be cool for them to offer the current reissue in some different color combinations like they’ve done with the blues jr from time to time. Your old white one is beautiful man , what’s the story on it ? Is it an actual Fender that’s been redone or is it some boutique build ?
