Warden Gragas - League of Legends Splash Art Painting Timelapse

Warden Gragas! I didn't expect I would return to this theme for the next splash after Kalista. This time I'm on good side. It was tricky posing Gragas because he is so huge and his hands are out of proportion. I was initially worried to do a low camera angle because it will not showcase his helmet design well but thanks a lot to Mingchen for the PO sketch for still making it work. I redid him in the thumbnail sketch like 4 times but it was worth it because the rendering stage went smoother.
One thing I learned when doing this is to really push the highlights even if they seem a bit too blown out. It really helped enhance the epicness of the piece. Something I struggled with was the shockwaves which I redrew like 5+ times. Every time there was a revision, I had to redo the shockwaves because they depended on what was underneath.
Thanks again to everyone at Riot and West Studio!

► A splash takes 4-5 weeks. 1st week for multiple sketches. 2nd week to figure out the colors. 3rd to 5th week to render and polish.
► I paint with the canvas size 8,000 x 4,500 px but it is shrunk down to 7,000 x 3938 for final.
► This video is 50x speed up. Do the math based on this video's time. Usually, the real time is around 40-80+ hours. (if the other thumbnails were added in). Actual work hours are more than 100+ hrs when you factor in the other thumbnails, research, and contemplating time.
► The toolbar at the left side is called Lazy Nezumi. It helps me get smoother lines and have perspective guides.
► To quickly color a grayscale, I use two methods.
GRAYSCALE COLORING 1ST METHOD:
• Layer on top: The grayscale set to multiply. Brighten it up and colorize depending on the mood you want. This Acts as an AO pass.
• Layer below: Use a solid brush to paint in the flat local colors.
GRAYSCALE COLORING 2ND METHOD: (Messier)
• Layer on top: Set this layer to softlight and add in your colors. This makes it a bit look dull on the highlights so you need to manually fix the highlight colors.
• Layer below: Grayscale here.
► Tip for revisions. You can use liquify on multiple layers. Right after you do it on one layer. You can press Alt+Ctrl+F to apply it again to a different layer. Make sure not to deselect your selection if you are doing this.
► I use color dodge and sometimes linear dodge blending mode to add in lighting layers.
► I group layers using this logic:
1. Post processing
2. VFX, magic
3. Character
4. Some fog
5. Background people, elements, etc
6. Sky and far background
► Here are my tools:
2008-2020:
• Wacom Intuos 3 6″x8″
• Samsung T190
• Intel Core i7 3.50GHz, 16GB RAM, Windows 7
• Photoshop CS6, DAZ 3D, Alchemy
2021:
• XP Pen Artist 24 PRO
• Dell UltraSharp
• AMD Ryzen 7 3700X 8-Core, 32 GB RAM, Windows 10
• Force Series Gen.4 PCIe MP600 500GB NVMe M.2 SSD (this is important for faster everything)
• Photoshop CC, Daz 3D, Zbrush, Maya
► To open a second window of your artwork in Photoshop it is located in Window - Arrange - New Window.
► To temporarily convert your artwork into grayscale. Go to View - Proof Setup - Custom - Select Dot Gain 20%. Then Press Ctrl + Y to toggle this view.
► I am not going to upload longer or shorter versions of this because that takes too much of my personal time. I'm already giving this away for FREE.

I already have a lot by that time like more than 30+ but the only ones that are really important were around 5 pcs. Those pieces were made to look like League splash art already. I was already trying to copy their style early on and it helped me get recognized. If it is too laggy for you, I suggest merging most of your layers and just keep at least the character separated from the bg. You can also try working on the character on a separate PSD first then just put it back with the background when its done. etc

Yup, all of us splash artists spend a lot of time on these. This is why Lol splash art has a level of quality and polish higher than other marketing art. We spend 1 week just fixing the sketch. Those types of nitpicking and experimenting to find the best composition really shows in the final product. So yeah, other than spending more time for your work, it is also important to ask advice from other great artists. :)

My layers look complex but in reality the logic is just to put the VFX on top, Foreground, Fog, Character, Fog, Background. That is the most basic logic. The only reason my layering looks complicated is because I chop up the character into parts and each part can have some detail textures clipped on top of it.

Is a clean lineart an essential in making splash art?

  • @deivcalviz

    @deivcalviz

    3 жыл бұрын

Great Question! The answer is NO. I've seen other splash artists start with messy scribbles. If you look at my older splash process, my lines are not this clean. However, I've been studying these past months on how to do better lineart and it has helped me so much. The Lol style is supposed to be stylized and with clean lines, I am able to design those curves better. It also sped up my process because my sketch already looks like the final and this helped the client be more confident in my work which leads to less revision work. 😉

Ironically that was all my decision and not from them. You will get used to it. Sometimes you need to redraw something to get the best result and that is totally fine. If not, then this job is not for you.

Whoah ! I like your process videos ! But why do Riot hire freelance illustrator ? Can’t they just hire people in their big L.A. Studio ?

  • @deivcalviz

    @deivcalviz

    3 жыл бұрын

I believe its less expensive and less risky for the company to outsource. This is true for most companies. Almost all major studios outsource. You will be surprised. Like if they hire too much then their game doesnt sell well, what will they do with the extra people.. stuff like that. Also another factor is that there are just not enough talent out there that are willing to relocate. Easiest way to access high level talent is by outsourcing.
