In this video, I present a very advanced and dangerous MEC trick that you can use to mitigate the thrust loss at low speed that Bf109s, especially high tier Bf109s, suffer from. Included are the thrust graphs at various prop pitch % and of course the reference thrust as a function of speed with automatic engine controls.
This trick is mostly useful in duels, and in a pinch like in this video:

    @@AdamTheEnginerd Everything engine control related is manual in DCS, and in order to stall climb you need to push the engine quite a lot. Either that, or something to do with how the spitfire uses a carburetor? The engine fails if you perform a prolonged stall climb, an excessive dive, or a flat-spin. (And engine shut-off due to fuel flow if upside-down or pulling negative g's)

    @@AdamTheEnginerd Nah, the engine breaking and the fuel shutoff are two different things. Pull a standard stall climb, come out of the stall climb, and the engine is banged up and smoking - however still running the entire time. A fuel cutoff then can just do a mid-air engine restart and no loss of power.

    As an aircraft mechanic, i am proud of you for figuring out prop pitch, and how you can use that to your advantage in-game. 95% of all prop airplanes' propellers can have their pitch adjusted. They can go from a *full feather,* (which is when the blade is perpendicular to the direction of movement) to a full 90° "flat" position. Turboprop propellers can even go all the way into reverse. They slow down on landing this way. Now on most planes, this is a more or less automatic process, for the most efficient operation. The pitch is reduced as your throttle and RPM increases, and increased as you lower your power & RPM. The only control you have is adjusting the upper and lower limits of that, using an RPM lever type control in the cockpit. On a piston aircraft, you have three such controls. Throttle, mixture, and RPM. On a turboprop, you only have two: power and RPM. When you shut your plane down, the best practice is to bring your RPM all the way either up or down. It covers the pitch changing mechanism, and protects it from the outside world. On a turboprop, it's much more important to do this because it also prevents your propeller and engine from pinwheeling in the wind. This prevents an unlubricated engine from turning, and wearing excessively. Hope you enjoyed this bit of knowledge. *Would you like to know more?*

    @@AdamTheEnginerd I can actually tell you the exact moment LOL 2:19 How can prop angle/pitch be a function of speed when the two are completely independent? Also maybe this is why I couldn't really figure out how to effectively use MEC anyway, but why are the angles so low? I thought 100 was generally the best unless you're diving or at cruising speed (where you'd drop your pitch to reduce your propeller decelerating you from drag)

  • @AdamTheEnginerd

    @AdamTheEnginerd

    3 жыл бұрын

    @@icetheking4310 Pitch angle changes with speed because if the prop had a fixed pitch, it would get easier and easier to spin the prop as the aircraft accelerates because the propeller will be seeing a lower angle of attack or a smaller "bite" of air as the aircraft goes faster. Props in WW2 were constant speed propellers, so the pitch angle of the propeller would change with speed to keep RPM constant and to stay close to the more efficient angle of attack for the propeller. What angles are low? I think the confusion stems from the fact that you don't know that German prop pitch works differently than for every other nation. For the Germans, prop pitch % will give a pitch angle directly, while for other aircraft, prop pitch % gives the target RPM instead. It's also why this trick would only work on German aircraft. Except for German aircraft, the general rule is prop pitch = throttle.

    Great video as always! I learned this trick from you 1 year ago and it’s extremely important to fight 1v1s against aircrafts that can match 109s climb rate like the Griffon spits or the yak3. Since you can’t outturn them, the only way to get behind them is to reverse the situation with a stall climb. After the headon climb at medium speed (about 330km/h IAS) then when they are like 2 km away from you go full vertical and use the trick. If they followed you in your medium speed climb, they are dead. Some players might start climbing at more efficient speeds without committing, then just run away and focus on others, since if they don’t commit, they aren’t a threat to you.

  • @AdamTheEnginerd

    AdamTheEnginerd at medium high altitude is the best was to kill the LF or the VK. Against griffon it works between 4000 a and 5000 meters. At high altitude (6000m) I usually start running away until i get about 3 km distance, then stall climb, and then you’ll be again facing each other at about 1.5 km, but you’ll have a small energy advantage. Just repeat this trick 1-2 times more and you’ll have a big energy advantage. If, instead of following you running, they start climbing just ignore them and go for other enemies. Obviously with a decent team bait and switch is a much much better tactic much less dangerous

    I have an extremely important note for the 100 prop pitch in a 109. If you dive then enable the prop pitch at like 5 to 6 hundred kmph IAS, it will slow you down to 0IAS so don't forget to turn it back to auto before you lose all of your speed and stall. I recommend turning it on when you are at the beginning of your dive near 300kmph IAS since it lets you gain speed, but not as quick.

    Hey Adam, after playing a bunch of Ground forces i went back to my true passion and thats flying everything that is capable of doing so... now 3 years later after a long long ground forces i hafe the feeling that Ammounition is the most unbalanced thing in this game... Flying F7F-3 the 20mm is working like a charm Flying the FW-190C MG-151 working like a charm Flying the and the I-225 with the same or double amount of Cannons they do litraly nothing but sparking... sure after spamming 50-80 bullets in to the enemy plane he maybe will die (counting that not every shot will hit but to get the same result as the F7F for example i need not even half the amount of bullets fired) Flying the Spitfires the 7.7s seem to do more than the Hispanos Flying the Japanese aircraft wich resemble gambling since out of 100 games i can not get something evidential out of them Didnt touch China Gertaly usses the MG151 so... works The Hispano 404 on the Frenchies are somewhat of an middle thing to the AN/M3 and the Hispano Mk.2/5s they seem to do more then British ones but less then the americans... even they are more or less the same Cannon, besides the ammo loading and reliability they are not that much different in real life. The Swedish boys... my god they are Brain dead to use... one of those and the enemy goes boom even their 13.2mm are Broken This is just for 20mm Cannons... wich is basicly the biggest problem here... but now moving up to the High battlerating stuff... MiG-15/bis/17 i used to one tap my mouse hit an enemy and the enemy would go boom now i am used to one tap my mouse the enemy gets Hit and i get sparks/ and Hits out of it... Same with the german MK108s while the MG-151 and MK-103s are doing fine.... and lets not start with the MiG-21SMT 23mm cannon... that thing is a spark launcher... i mean a friend of mine called it out that the 23mm Gsh on the 21 is going to be as shit as on the helicopters or on the Il28Ish. But the 30mm on the F-13 is still doing fine... like i end up getting 3 kills on the SMT with 2 on R60s and 1 on the cannons but by then i used all of my ammo... while i get an ACE on the F-13 while still having 20rounds left... Now here is my point... why is this happening ? I tried nearly every single belt nearly every single cannon and the results wont change... I looked up on the Forums, and there is Latency on one point the others say gaijin cant code, while others say there is no real problem cuz 50.cals work fine then again other people say they hafe no problem... and i need answers because this is getting me mad and frustrated since so many cool planes are unplayble because their amarment just doesnt work.... Adam please do you hafe a answer to this ? You seem to know everything about this game so i am begging you... can i fix this shit ?

BTW the new mustang is a joy to fly. based on my tests put the pitch at 90% and radiators at 55 for hot maps and 45 for cold maps to prevent significant emotional event during climbing. can i use this trick on ta152? i looks like it has a small prop compared to it's engine power .

    In the beginning you're talking about a Vx climb, once you add the constant speed propellers in its getting into propeller efficiency. I don't play war thunder so idk how the game's planes work, but normally you set the propeller governor to a certain engine rpm that is most efficient for a specific power setting. Like in a Piper Arrow II, a good climb setting is 25" of manifold pressure and 2,500rpm on the governor. Edit since I read my own comment: Both things I was talking about are about propeller efficiency lol

  • @AdamTheEnginerd

    @AdamTheEnginerd

    The automatic system in most planes takes care of changing RPM when you change throttle. In this plane you actually need to manually override the automatic system to give the pitch and hence RPM you want.

  • @SgfGustafsson

    @SgfGustafsson

    3 жыл бұрын

    @@AdamTheEnginerd ah ok, in 'real life' you control the pitch of the propeller by setting the spring tension on a governor via a lever, which adjusts it to seek an engine rpm by either increasing or decreasing the pitch angle of the blades to add or remove torque/load from the engine. So, set the rpm with the propeller control and it will hold that rpm regardless of power setting. I'm sure newer aircraft with special computers constantly adjust this automatically like on the new Technam. Thanks for the clarification!

I would bind it to the same key that I have my airbrakes and thrust reverser on. I already added a separate key so I can apply wheel brakes while I maintain full throttle and tested it fully with my SK60B. With it I can come in at full WEP, hit H, deploying airbrakes _and_ reverse thrusters, and hold the B for wheel brakes as well. If I can toggle reverse prop pitch on and off with my airbrakes, (where applicable), I can get the same effect across a wider selection of aircraft. How can I set up my prop pitch to toggle as described?

    I meant is there any way to increase thrust on takeoff for example the B-24D can’t take without using the additional land after the end of the takeoff strip if the takeoff flaps are deployed. This doesn’t go to well if your on a map with trees surrounding the airstrip.

    I wonder if drags are also affect the thrust like in either Tempest or Typhoon variants since they have a large propeller rivalling the F4U

    Not sure what you mean by that, but large propellers make your prop stay efficient at low speed.

    A little late to the party, but.... Is there a point when torque overwhelms control authority as IAS reduces? Does Gaijin not model that as it could cause too many ground loops thanks to the Me 109’s infamous narrow track landing gear? Or is not really a problem as long as you are paying careful attention to the throttle and propeller pitch angle?

    There's no torque in RB, but in SB there definitely is, you can't aim well if you're below stall speed in SB.
