Hello Dragil , Mr Johnson said at the beginning of this energy problem, Germany has a problem because they rely on receiving more than fifty % of their energy needs from Russia, whereas Britain only takes six % from Russia, I wonder why Mr Johnson has failed to tell us why Germany isn’t experiencing problems as big as Britain’s ? Yes Germany does have a problem, yet they are able to inform their population what the initial extra cost individuals should expect to cough up ? One English Government Minister said ‘ we are unable to say. How much extra people will have to pay just yet because we do have a leadership contest going on at the moment “

Not just Europe. We have our own problems here in America. America is currently plagued with the hydra-headed evvil duo of inflation and recession. The worst part about this recession is that consumers are racking up credit card debt. In April alone, credit card debt went up 20% while rates have doubled in a year. Inflation is so high that consumers are literally taking debt for basic life necessities. Collapse has indeed begun.

Very skewed. I wonder how renewable energy alone can solve all the problems overnight. And "maybe some new technologies." It seems wishful thinking to me. And if there was a lesson to be drawn out of this tragic story is that you on't commit to a single solution but rather to diversify energy sources. Last three points: 1) if you already had more nuclear energy reactors you would sit comfortably with lower prices and fewer worries about energy availability (coming from Italy I perfectly know how painful it is having no nuclear energy); 2) building nuclear reactors is a long-term strategy, it has high upfront costs but it is a reliable sojrce of energy, not much like some renewables. 3) weaning off Russian gas to be then subjected to China, the absolute leader in rare earths, PV production and recycling does not seem to be a wise strategy, unless you are people who only see what happens today without caring for the future,

Spent nuclear fuel assemblies stored at nuclear power facilities are yet useful. They are stored configured to reduce nuclear reaction to a minimum; many years in this configuration eventually results in the assembly being in a cool state. If a fuel assembly were to be moved to a municipal thermal plant, it could be reconfigured to produce a low thermal output that assists the facility to operate requiring reduced use of fossil fuel. Imagine using the spent assemblies to power pyrolysis of plastics to produce clean diesel fuel. Very possible. Would be a great solution for plastics waste.

"Russia could turn off the tap on the gas to retaliate" ... they could, but they won't do so; it would be like kicking your own b4ll5, as the commodities are the only products Russia can "produce" and export to get foreign currencies. Russia does NOT produce ANYTHING where you add value to it. Just extraction of fuel (oil, gas, coal) and mining of many materials and wheat. Moreover, Russia doesn't have the infrastructure to sell its gas to China and India, and you need years to build that infrastructure. And selling the oil at $50 per barrel when it costs you $46 to extract (*) doesn't bring you any profit. Russia is using its $300 B reserve in foreign currency, and it can't last more than 15 months. Something is going to happen in Russia, as people get angry when their stomach is empty (*) Russia have to sell at a 30% discount to India and China, and Russian oil is the most expensive to extract and is the cheapest quality of the three Edit: The actual discount is $35, which means, a 43% discount on an $82 per barrel price of the Ural oil as for 25 August

Russia already lost 3 decades of economic progress in just a few months, despite being dirt poor already. There is no scenario where Russia "wins" this. And now Europe, the richest most developed part of the world by far, will get really pissed. You've seen nothing yet. This will get a whole lot worse. Esp. for Russia. Regarding Emily's point at the end of the interview. Boris is basically right, and here's why. Renewable energy cannot form the backbone of the electrical grid. It isn't scalable without massive investments in battery storage and over capacity production. The immidiate defecit can only be solved with hydrocarbons and getting some of them from the North Sea will be cheaper overall. 15 or 20 years down the road, nuclear energy will still be far more practical, far cheaper and even more environmentally friendly than any kind of serious renewable energy grid. The only practical renewable energy for grid scale production is hydroelectric, and you need a lot of mountains and rivers to make it work.

Since they are democracies , will they be able to convince the economically vulnerable sections of their population, the rationale for supporting a proxy war, objectives of which seem like putting Russia in its own place. 2. The ability to subsidise energy bills for economically vulnerable. 3. The phenomenon of most of African and Asian nations distancing themselves from this conflict. Inflation is caused by a variety of factors, not just the monetary side. Stimulus packages are sometimes necessary for low income people, because although they can increase inflation short term, they reactivate the economy during recession and are beneficial long term. Of course unbridled money printing is a no-no, but interest rate adjustments and subsidies for low income people are quite standard measures during times of crisis, not only a demagogue trying to have poor people on their side.
