After listening to each discussion on bloggingtheology, I'm always, always like 'yeah, this is the best lecture I've listened to' but br Paul and his guests always cause me to change my mind.. Brilliant guests, really brilliant people. And for many of them to be not born Muslims gives me even more certainty that Islam is true. I mean how can these brilliant people not realise islam is false 'if it is at all'. Alhamdulillah.

This has been the most enjoyable educational hour of my early morning. Jazakallah khairan to professor Joel Hayward and to brother Paul for inviting him. I studied Islamic history in college but never quite understood the reasons for the turmoil of the Umayyad and Abbasid dynasties - the grandeur, yes, but why the competing claims to Islam, no. The professor’s exhaustive explanations help to clarify many issues. Thank you once again.

In book 21 of Jihad hadith 10: Yahya related to me from Malik from Yahya ibn Said that Abu Bakr as-Siddiq was sending armies to ash-Sham. He went for a walk with Yazid ibn Abi Sufyan who was the commander of one of the battalions. It is claimed that Yazid said to Abu Bakr, "Will you ride or shall I get down?" Abu Bakrsaid, "I will not ride and you will not get down. I intend these steps of mine to be in the way of Allah." Then Abu Bakr advised Yazid, "You will find a people who claim to have totally given themselves to Allah. Leave them to what they claim to have given themselves. You will find a people who have shaved the middle of their heads, strike what they have shaved with the sword. "I advise you ten things: Do not kill women or children or an aged, infirm person. Do not cut down fruit-bearing trees. Do not destroy an inhabited place. Do not slaughter sheep or camels except for food. Do not burn bees and do not scatter them. Do not steal from the booty, and do not be cowardly."

The reconquesta went after Muslims to the Americas, oh now it makes so much sense why the Roman empire took on the non-monotheistic version of christinaity after two to three hundred years it fits their pagan beliefs perfectly! Interesting!

@@justanotherman1114 Good point from my humble perspective, they have tampered with the monotheistic creed of Christianity based on their own pagan beliefs when they adopted a polytheistic version of Christianity based on Roman mythology in 312, creating a theological delusion that both religions "Christianity and Islam are different , where the first was tainted by roman mythology displaying the concept of a god/man, and humans can become a part of this god/man, soon after came the Nicea convention 325 debating and declaring the divinity of Christ, then the prosecution of monotheistic Christians sprang the wide spread adoption of not a misunderstanding but a huge misconception, feeding into the theory of otherness/nemesis/enemy, then you find " crusades/conquests" fighting for Christ the god/man, enormous political traction and power, driven profits from opposing a religion that actually holds the same monotheistic understanding of early Christians who didn’t get it wrong but they got it right, from my observation this feeling kept on growing and feeding into a sense of vengeance against Islam in the form the Reconquista that seeks to eradicate it, again based on the concept of otherness, it was not a spring of a moment decision but the outcome of a distorted creed because of the impact of the of Roman theology on Christianity. I didn’t really explain my point of view, but I see that arrogance and being proud to see the truth keeps on repeating itself with an astounding pace through human history before Islam, Christianity and Judaism, but at least now I understand why there is a whole Surah in the holy Quran called AR - RUM. I didn’t expect anyone to read my comments so thank you for asking

What is really remarkable is that every monotheistic religion gets tampered with through polytheistic traction, but Islam never did, which convinced me that this final message is preserved by Allah, as Prophet Muhammed PBUH had received a series of divine revelations; where he had grown up in the depths of Arabia, in a pagan metropolis, Mecca; yet for 100 of years to follow this creed of monotheism was never tainted by culture or mythology, the message itself, not how people practice it! Back to the prophet Muhammed PBUH that had fled to another city, Yathrib, where he had established the primal Muslim state; that this flight, or hijra, had transformed the entire order of time, and come to provide Muslims with their Year One: all this was enshrined to momentous effect by Ibn Hisham. The contrast between Islam and the age that had preceded it was rendered in his biography as clear as that between midday and the dead of night. The white radiance of Muhammad's revelations, blazing first across Arabia and then to the limits of the world, had served to bring all humanity into a new age of light. he brought the light, but the light is ever existent and that light is Allah who promised to preserve this message from any tampering and this is just another sign of him.

Dear YA, thanks for your message, don't forget that they pay and Muslim pay that too zakah (charity 2.5 of net wealth) and the Muslims protect them in case of war, and Omar gave people of the book charity in the famous story when he saw an old poor Christian or Jew who could not work, he gave charity just as with poor Muslims! If you have time read how Muslims entered Spain, why, and read how the "entered Cordoba " I read it from Spanish sources in Spanish language, they say they camp in the other side of Guadalquivir (from Wadi al kabir in Arabic) and waited in the morning people receive them with doors open, they did not resist or fight, because they heard how Muslims treated other town to the south of them justly and have much much lower taxes than the Visigoths who levied high taxes on them. etc etc.. Mass destruction weapon is not allowed in Islam because it is indiscriminate and can kill innocent non combatant people.

But Ibn Zinjawayhi mentioned in his book al-Amwal that the number is 40 people. This can be found in page 299 of al-Amwal by Ibn Zinjawayhe. /First edition- 1986. Edited by Dr Shakir Dheeb Fayyadh. The second point is the way the prophet's stand regarding war and while trying to explain why did he engage in offensive wars, the argument presented shows the prophet to be a leader of nation-state more than a leader has responsibility & concerns towards all others.

The argument if you don't have the ability then it is not a just war. This in my opinion something that is a later innovation, and much of its conception comes from modern dictators who argue that we don't have the ability to stand against the West, and hence we should not fight. If you take the Prophetic example or the examples of his companions, you see that Muslims were very often were at disadvantage, starting with the Battle of Badr.

We have to know that among the reasons of taking the sword at that time is when a emperor or an army stands between the civilian people and the Muslims by force to stop their sacred duty which is reaching the word of Allah to mankind (that duty is offering Islam to people peacefully with no compulsion in religion, and they have the choice to accept or reject). Example of some emperors who stopped the word of Allah to reach to their people and Muslims took the swords against them, we have: -Heracles the roman emperor - kisra emperor of persia - Al-Muqawqis the Egyptian emperor If a king or an emperor lets the Muslims to do their sacred duty like what had happened in Indian and many countries in Asia till Indonesia, also in yemen and in east Africa (the king negus as example). In that case the Muslims went away and left their countries after establishing thier Dawah which is their sacred duty. Now at our time of technology, taking the sword (war) is forbidden (Haram) because none can stop the message of Allah to reach the people.

Question: Are we sure that " the care for the people dependent" instigated Muhammed sas and the Rashidoun( the rightly guided Caliphs)to go to war i.e. fight for resources ? The logic that appeared later was in necessity of justifing and finding a solution for a new situation, for the era of the kings, majority of which cared a lot for prestige and wealth. So to go back to the Prophet sas and the Rashidoun, I was reading a long time ago that Muhammed sas sent messengers to all sides and the Emperor of Persia had the messengerkilled. With Byzantium it was more complex, the messenger to them was killed on the way to Constantinopol by the Arabs protecting the Byzantine border. They were Orthodox Christians loyal to the emperor. It was also said that the Byzantine Emperor did not even have a clue about what happened. Anyways, those events in reality were a cause of war. Another thing is the position of religion in the empires of the time, take Byzantium for example. Only the official version of Christianity was allowed, Jews and members of other Christian denominations did not have civil rights, Jews were not allowed to live in Jerusalem and the remnant of the wall was covered with garbage including pig carcasses, on orders of Emperor Justinian's wife. In those circumstances, how can one hope to do Islamic dawa as one should? That is where I believe we should look for the reasons for the first wars.

all this over thinking is not needed. It was an empire when conquering lands was not only celebrated(i.e. Alexander) but also necessary. An empire which didn't expand was considered stagnant and weak by the neighbours, thus they'd have to deal with outside attacks.

@@ezazahmed8379 The subject is of huge importance here, hense this is not overthinking. The Prophet pbuh and the rightly guided Caliphs were interested in dawa ( propagating Islam) and protection of the ummah from attack. This is where we should look for their motivation for war. Understanding their motivation helps us get proper understanding. Muhammad pbuh and the first Caliphs were NOT warlords.

They are not out of the fight. It would depend on where they were landing once they parachuted. If the landing is down at civilian location they are still considered combatants. I can calculate and say well they’re going to be captured by the civilians anyway I’m taking a chance of them doing civilians harm once they land so take them out while in the air. If we were in no man’s land without any civilians than the French are right I’ll let them parachute down and look for them wherever they landed they’d probably be more useful as prisoners then just killing them when they aren’t a threat.

Are you a software engineer/ programmer? I ask because your format of writing seems software programmery, if there's such a word,. I agree with everything you say, it seems the only way , and we couldn't of known this without Quran it's just , many people born into religion and have not put themselves under the microscope in terms of inherited practice that majority will accept as truth without evidence or have high anxietys of punishment or guilt and are side tracked to believe that God has given only one way that is applicable to him and the rest is doomed when infact the one way is applicable on each and every individuals circumstances and their own capacity in terms of cognitive levels of understanding etc one person's regular salaah might be to feed people ( charity workers), feed birds that every other day for 5 mins, some read and understand Quran on regular, others quite refelction time, some may choose to on occasions congregate with others and work towards good works all these acts in my opinion with a intention of clarity are all forms of salaah, but traditionalists are adamant that Hadith this and that says different, eventhough Quran dosent mention it so , but the salaah described by Quran is all pointing towards establishing good habits and to do them at appointed times , indicating haveing a structure and not being random go lucky individuals without haveing a plan and to achieve and not become bums, but have purpose and a routine like the animals they all have they're salaah ( routine) not having routine people become more depressed generally and a person doing a job they don't like 😀

Organized warfare commenced circa 12000 years ago. It arose in parallel with slavery, organized religion and even mathematics. Religion did not cause war, however religion was used as an excuse to wage war: Crusades, Moors, Ottoman Empire, etc. Unfortunately islam has had the same fate as all monotheistic religions and waged wars. And of course two wrongs don't make a right.... I would not have expected war from the most purest and absolute of religions. Just war does not exist because it is always relative to some perspective.

Who are the Moors? What are the wars that makes them equal to Ottomans or god forbid crusades? Moors are people who were compelled from their homes in Andulus through wars and compelled expulsion. They lived in their home country of Andulus from Cicily, Cordoba and Lisbon in 800 years. Then killed, their properties are taken and family members either converted or murdered. You can't compare bloody crusaders and moors. Crusaders are not expelled from middle east. They were aggressive from North and mid europe for killing, burning and looting

Why would you not expect war. War has been part of human existence since humans existed!! All religions should have solutions for dealing with the oppressor In Islam it is quite clear . You lift your sword for the oppressed, the weak, the abused against the oppressor. Or defence against the disbelievers or those attacking your land and property Any true guidance for life has to have guidance on how to deal with oppressors and greedy land grabbers If politics and talks don’t work then war is the last option.

After all there are already many other religions operating. How does he unite the Arab tribes against Christians and Jews? What can he do with all these pre-existing religions so that the pagan Arabic tribes don't become worshippers? Deny them? Ridicule them? Or subsume them under some new religion that is the creme del a creme of religions. Its all so childish.
